WITH APOLOGIES TO MOSES AND JOSHUA
Once upon a time there was a church made up of very ordinary people, just like you and me. When it was set up, the pastor and people had been full of vision and enthusiasm for taking their city for Jesus. "God is with us!" "He will do it!"To start, the 'hard core' of real enthusiasts went out onto the streets preaching the Word. They advertised widely in the newspaper and on radio. It looked good. A new, enthusiastic church in town!
But as they preached, they started to find opposition arising. Some, those who preferred the world’s pleasures now, to building treasures in heaven, mocked them. Most others were simply disinterested. But what hurt the most, was the criticism from the other, well established churches in town. "They won’t succeed. We haven't." "Religious extremists!"
So the 12 went back to the church and reported the reaction they had received. Ten said, "We have met lots of opposition. It is just too difficult. We recommend to undertake a building project and once the people see we are established, they will come to us."
The other two disagreed. "Although the challenges are great, we should persevere, for our God is greater than the opposition."
But the people of the church sided with the majority. And they fundraised. And they built a beautiful building. And they waited for the people to come in. And they waited. And they waited.
That was 40 years ago now. The original members had now died, been transferred out of town, or were simply too tired to bother coming to yet another 'dead' church. But some of their children remained and a few others who had transferred from other churches or come in from out of town.
The people had been blessed with daily bread. No one was hungry - in body or spirit.
The years went on, and on, and on.
Sadly, the 2 remaining enthusiasts had finally got fed up with the people's attitudes and moved on too. "Good to see them go. Yes, they had a heart for Jesus, but they were too idealistic. We are more comfortable without them........"
"But the day is coming, has indeed now come" says the Lord, "when I am going to sift my people, to separate the grain from the chaff, the wheat from the tares. Wake up my people, for as in the day of Joshua, I am again calling my people to claim the Promised Land. Wake up my people, repent of your wearisome ways. Have courage to enter my kingdom that I have prepared for you. Wake up my people, for the time of conquest and occupation has now come."
The Lord is full of surprises! Had no idea what was going to come when I started writing this. Are we tares or are we wheat? We will soon know!

FROM THE WORD
“They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.†Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.†But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.†And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.†That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?†And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.†“(Numbers 13:26-14:24)“ “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: ‘The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.’ In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.†The LORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times — not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.†(Numbers 14:17-24)
“ “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.†“ (Matthew 3:11-12)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
THE AGE OF GRACE35. The biggest impediment for many in delaying a decision for Christ is the mistaken belief that the present ‘Age of Grace’ will never end.
36. God’s nature is finely balanced between love and judgement. As His love has predominated for the past 2000 years, how fearsome then must be the single Day of Judgement that is to come.
37. We know in life, that all good things come to an end. How is it then, that we continue to believe that the current age of God’s grace and mercy will go on forever?
38. Why is it that I continue to walk round and round the mountain when I know when the path to the top goes up?
178. God's gracious gift of grace is the reason to walk in truth, not an excuse to continue in sin.
317. God's graciously given grace gift gallantly galvanises garrulous, grateful gentiles!

FROM YOU - TO ME - TO YOU
Hello David,Your comments from Mt 24 this week have an even larger context from the Bible.
From II Pet 3:11-12, we are told, "You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming."
How do we speed the day of God? The answer is found in the passage you shared:" And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." Mt 24:14
So, our task is simple: find out where the gospel is not being preached (among the unreached or least reached people groups) and make a maximum contribution toward helping it to get preached there.
This interpretation is confirmed by Paul's priority as described in Rom 15:20, "It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known."
Thank you for your inspirational thoughts David
With gratitude for the opportunity to serve,
Wes Bowers
Dear David
I thoroughly enjoy "Praise God it Monday" and it is one of the first eMails I read on Monday mornings.
I have a question that maybe you or your recipients might be able to answer.
In the Old Testament the term "thorns in your side" refers to the inhabitants of the land giving trouble to the Israelites. However when Paul uses a similar term in the New Testament we attribute the comment to an aliment. Because the Old and New Testaments were written in different languages does the meaning change from one to other?
I have always believed that Paul's thorn in the side (flesh) was a person or persons that brought trouble to Paul (like the silversmith or Jewish leaders from the synagogue). I supposed this belief was reinforced by the following words "a messenger of satan".
Can you or another reader able to clarify this?
Continue the good work and I am looking forward to seeing the program when it is shown in Australia.
Regards
Stephen Reddish

It has not been proven scientifically that homosexuals are what they are and can't help. There are many who have come out of the homosexual lifestyle by the grace of God through Christ Jesus.
But, it is irrelevant whether or not homosexuality is genetic. According to the Bible, God's word, homosexuality is wrong, therefore it is incompatible with a Christian lifestyle, just as gluttony, gossiping, lying and other sins.
All men are born polygamists, yet we do not allow them to practice polygamy, even thought they are born that way. We don't allow polygamy because we know that marriage between one man and one woman is better for the couple and better for society. It is the way God designed things. So we call on men to curb their natural desire and focus their love and attention on one woman.
So, even if a homosexual is "born that way", he or she should turn from that "natural" desire, because God says it is wrong, and if he or she can't manage a heterosexual relationship, then at least stay abstinent.
That is the only choice that is consistent with the Christian lifestyle as spelled out by God in his word.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
319. WINDOWS 95
Abraham is trying to load Windows 95 on his computer. His son, Isaac, walks in and says,
"Dad, what are you doing? You can't load Windows 95 on to your computer! You need at least a 486 with 14 megs of memory; you only have a 386 with no available memory."
And Abraham said, "Don't worry, son, God will provide the Ram."
318. WAKE UP CALL
A certain pastor was upset with a man in his congregation who was frequently going to sleep during the sermon, so the pastor decided to teach the man a lesson. Near the end of the sermon, the pastor, in a normal voice said, "If there's anyone here this morning who wants to go to hell . . .", he began - then raising his voice to a near shout, continued, PLEASE STAND UP."
The sleeping gentleman, startled from his slumber, sprang to his feet. Then he slowly looked around and then said, "Well, Pastor, I'm not sure why it is that I'm standing, but it looks like it's you and I are in the same boat."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who invented embalming?ANSWER: The ancient Egyptians were famous for their embalming techniques. Modern embalming however, in which a preservative is injected into the corpse's arteries, was developed in the 1600s by the same person who discovered the circulatory system - an Englishman, William Harvey. It took another century for the practice to become popular though.
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Who invented the toothbrush?

Writing today's first article was a classic of the spiritual battle we are in - how God works and the devil opposes!God is full of surprises. You are without inspiration. You pray. Inspiration finally comes. It develops. Then out of the blue, comes an unexpected word!
On the other side, you go to post the article to the newsletter and it won't go in. You try and try again. Fail! This has happened before, but now you have experience and wisdom.
