WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCHThe major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".
Fifteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.
Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.
So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.
THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE
To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.
The relevant Scriptures can be accessed by clicking on the blue links.
THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER
Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.†9 Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.†10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, â€â€˜they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’†13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.†(Mark 4:1-20)
This, one of the best known and most important (for Jesus took the trouble to explain it's meaning) parables, contains a number of important truth's, not all of which can be explained here.
I would like to deal with but two, one today, one next week, of principles that are less understood.
Today, we see the lesson that is to be learned from the different types of ground in which the 'seed' of God's Word was sown.
Without delving into the different types of soil, the overall message is that all new Christians need to be nurtured in their faith in order to avoid falling by the wayside.
I have huge respect for evangelists, those who have the courage to go out and witness in the highways and byways and make 'converts' through the 'sinners prayer', which incidentally, is not found in the Bible, although the principles behind it are.
However, many 'count converts' by this method, while failing to understand the basic message of the Parable of the Sower. As the popular saying goes, 'there is many a slip twixt cup and lip'. Sadly, many studies have found that over 90% of conversions in crusades, etc., have failed 'to stick', for they have been planted in the wrong soil.
To understand this, it is necessary to look again at the 'Great Commission'. For there, Jesus did not say to go out and make 'converts', but rather, 'disciples'.
Matthew 28:16-20
What is involved here?
FIRSTLY, we must 'go out'. That is what evangelists do so well. Whether it is out into the streets or travelling across the world, the infectious enthusiasm of the evangelist takes the message of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus, to many people.
However, that is not all that is involved in obtaining a sound, long lasting conversion.
For SECONDLY, we are required to make 'disciples' of people. Discipleship does not come through making a decision, but rather, through a complete change of lifestyle to one of becoming like Jesus.
To understand what Jesus means by discipleship, it is necessary to go back to the times in which He lived.
When a boy reached 13, he came into adulthood. The best and brightest would be chosen to become 'disciples' of one of the Rabbis of the day. They would follow the Rabbi round, imitating his every word and action. For their aim was become like the Rabbi.
Jesus is our rabbi. We are to become like Him. We may not be the best and brightest of the crop, but then, the disciples of Jesus were rejects from the Rabbis selection process also!
Discipleship requires both ongoing help and example, and, as we know ourselves, takes a lifetime. It is a process, not an event. So conversion without ongoing follow up is ineffective in maintaining over 90% of new believers in the faith.
THIRDLY, there is a requirement for baptism. Why? Not only because of the symbolism of burying the old life and taking on the new, but also, because it is a visible witness to others of a commitment made. An initial test of faith!
FOURTHLY, discipleship involves teaching the ways of Jesus. While the teachings we offer are good, the best form of discipling is on a one to one basis, where people can share their experiences personally and learn from one who has been through the challenges of walking with Jesus.
FIFTHLY, and finally, the key to discipleship is learning to be obedient to God's commands. Need I say any more! We all need to repent for the times we have failed to do so! But I trust we are changing...
2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV
There certainly is a need for our current approach to evangelism to be reconsidered. We must find ways to change a lip service commitment into a life changing experience. Discipling requires an intensive, time consuming, follow up process. Are we prepared to help the evangelist, through discipling, plant the seed in the good soil of the parable, producing a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown?
So we can continue to say.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth (Luke 4:14-30)
His home town. Reading from the scroll of Isaiah.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to announce good news to the destitute. He has sent me to proclaim that prisoners will be released, the blind will see, the oppressed will be freed, and to proclaim the time of the Lord’s favor.â€
“This Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled today!â€
“I’m sure you’ll repeat this proverb to me, ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ and ask, “Why don’t you do here in your own hometown what we heard you did in Capernaum?†But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. I guarantee that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah when there was a drought for three and a half years, causing a great famine throughout the country. Yet Elijah wasn’t sent to any of them. He was sent to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon! Even though there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha, the only one who was healed was Naaman the Syrian!â€
Jesus Healing an Official’s Son (John 4:32-54)
Who was near to death.
“Unless you see signs and wonders you people really won’t trust me,â€
“Go on home,†“Your son will live!â€
Jesus Driving Out an Evil Spirit (Mark 1:21-8, Luke 4:31-7)
At the synagogue in Capernaum.
“Be quiet! Come out of him.â€
Jesus Praying in a Solitary Place (Mark 1:35-8, Luke 4:38-44)
Is advised that the people are looking for Him.
“We have to go to the other towns around here so that I can tell them the good news as well—for that’s why I came,â€

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM1012. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the biggest hindrance to God building His kingdom is man building his. It's called religion.
1013. Man organises the god out of God!
1014. Religion builds tradition, the Spirit, change.
1015. Religion builds tradition, the Spirit breaks tradition down.
1016. One person's vision becomes their successor's job.
1017. The kingdom of God is built upon relationship, not organisation.
1018. Mankind cannot build the kingdom of God for He has already done it far better than we ever could.
1019. While religion may desire to build God's kingdom, it finally succeeds in building its own.
1020. The kingdom of God doesn't need to be built, rather, grasped hold of.
1021. Religion is of the proud, the kingdom of God, of the humble.

145. A DOG'S LOVE
Rev. Warren J. Keating, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Yuma, AZ., says that the best prayer he ever heard was, "Lord, please make me the kind of person my dog thinks I am."
144. KNW THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
A student was asked to list the 10 Commandments in any order. His response was: 3, 6, 1, 8, 4, 5, 9, 2, 10, 7.
143. ACTS 2:38
An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening service when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled "Stop, Acts 2:38".
The burglar quickly turned around and pointed his gun at her when she yelled again "Stop, Acts 2:38".
Well this time the man stopped, dead in his tracks. The woman calmly called the Police and explained what she had done. As the Officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked him "Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a Scripture to you."
"Scripture?" the burglar exclaimed, "I thought she said she had an AX and 2 38s."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: From where does the saying ‘Hobson's Choice’ originate?ANSWER: Hobson's Choice doesn't simply mean a difficult choice. It means no choice at all, rather like having to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. It originated from Thomas Hobson, a 16th-century stable-keeper, and a paid-up member of the amalgamated union of the bloody-minded. He only hired out his horses on a strict rotation system. Customers couldn't choose a horse for themselves. You got the one nearest the stable door or none! (What other choice did Hobson have?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is it true that hair and nails continue to grow after death?
Answer Next Week.
591. ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL
'Equinox’ is the Latin for ‘equal night’. Twice a year, in the spring and in the autumn (fall), the sun passes directly over the earth's equator and the length of day is virtually equal throughout the entire world, with both twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness. In the spring, it's called the vernal equinox (equal night of spring) and in the fall, the autumnal equinox. A time of the hope of the summer to come or memories of a summer gone. (But wouldn’t 100% summer be boring? Ask Californians.)
592. WASN'T ONE ENOUGH?
One Molasses Flood is unbelievable, two impossible! Yes? No! The second one, which strangely enough, also killed 21 people, took place on December 11, 1932 in Sucarnoochee, Mississippi. As in the earlier incident, a tank exploded letting the hot liquid roared through the town. (A bitter-sweet experience!)
593. HIGH JUMPER
When an armadillo is threatened, it jumps straight into the air. This works well to startle other predators, but if on a road when a car is approaching, it is not a good idea. Indeed, if they would stay still, armadillos are actually small enough for cars to safely travel over them, so long as they don't hit the tyres. (Instinct acts instinctively.)

"""OTHER'S SAYINGS TO ENLIGHTEN, AMUSE, OR BEMUSE"""SLOW DOWN THERAPY
1. Slow down; God is still in heaven. You are not responsible for doing it all yourself, right now.
2. Remember a happy, peaceful time in your past. Rest there. Each moment has richness that takes a lifetime to savor.
3. Set your own pace. When someone is pushing you, it's OK to tell them they're pushing.
4. Take nothing for granted: watch water flow, the corn grow, the leaves blow, your neighbor mow.
5. Taste your food. God gives it to delight as well as to nourish.
6. Notice the sun and the moon as they rise and set. They are remarkable for their steady pattern of movement, not their speed.
7. Quit planning how you're going to use what you know, learn, or possess. God's gifts just are; be grateful and their purpose will be clear.

17. LIFE'S LESSONS LEARNED FROM A DOG! If you stare at someone long enough, eventually you'll get what you want.
! Don't go out without ID.
! Be aware of when to hold your tongue, and when to use it.
! Leave room in your schedule for a good nap.

! When you do something wrong, always take responsibility (as soon as you're dragged out from under the bed).
18. MORE EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DAIRY
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal and some slop from a tin. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may vandalise another table leg.
DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induce myself to vomit a furball on their favorite chair... moderate success. For greater impact I must try this on their bed.
DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was... Hmmm. Not working according to plan.
19. DEAR GOD
Dear God, When we get to Heaven, can we lay on your couch? Or is it the same old story?
Dear God, Excuse me, but why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not one named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We dogs love a nice ride! I know every breed cannot have its own model, but it would be easy to rename the Chrysler Eagle the Chrysler Beagle!
Dear God, If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?
Dear God, Are there dogs on other planets, or are we alone? I have been howling at the moon and stars for a long time, but all I ever hear back is the beagle across the street.
Dear God, Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?
Dear God, Is it true that dogs are not allowed in restaurants because we can't make up our minds what NOT to order? Or is it the carpets again?
Dear God, When my family eats dinner they always bless their food. But they never bless mine. So, I've been wagging my tail extra fast when they fill my bowl. Have you noticed my own blessing?
Dear God, I've always lived at the shelter and I have everything I need. But many of the cats here have names and I don't. Could you give me a name, please? It would be good for my self-esteem.

Ten hours as a Jew in Paris
A journalist decided to test how safe the streets of Paris are for Jews - by wearing a religious skullcap and filming the public's reaction using a hidden camera.Zvika Klein, a reporter for Jewish news outlet NRG, silently walked in the city for ten hours wearing a kippah - also known as a yarmulke - on his head and a tzitzit (knotted ritual tassels).
As he wanders around neighbourhoods wearing the garments associated with his faith, he is spat at, threatened and even called a 'dog'.
Klein was inspired by a YouTube video in which a New York woman filmed the sexist remarks she endured in 10 hours of walking the streets of the Big Apple
After the attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris last month, where four Jews were murdered for their faith, he decided to record what life was really was like for a Jew living in Paris.
Posting the video on YouTube, he wrote: 'Welcome to Paris 2015, where soldiers are walking every street that houses a Jewish institution, and where keffiyeh-wearing men and veiled women speak Arabic on every street corner.'
He spent a day in Paris with a bodyguard while photographer Dov Belhassen documented the day using a GoPro camera hidden in his backpack.
He wandered through Jewish neighborhoods, around the Eiffel Tower, and then through mostly Muslim neighborhoods.
In an article accompanying the video, he said tourist attractions were 'relatively calm' - 'but the further from them we walked, the more anxious I became over the hateful stares, the belligerent remarks, and the hostile body language,' he wrote.
Boys shouted 'Viva Palestine' and as he passes a group of youths, one remarks: 'I'm joking, the dog will not eat you'.
Fingers were pointed at him in a cafe - and moments later, thugs awaited him on a street corner, he adds.
A little boy was shocked at his appearance in his neighbourhood, he reports. 'What is he doing here Mommy?' he asked. 'Doesn't he know he will be killed?'
It comes as Isreali Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the mass emigration of Jews from Europe to escape the rising tide of antisemitic terror attacks.
Netanyahu said Europe was no longer a safe haven for Jews following attacks in Paris and Copenhagen - adding that Israel is now the only country in the world where Jews can feel safe.
His comments sparked fury from Jewish groups and were promptly refuted by the leaders of France, Germany and Denmark.
But Mr Klein's video shows, in Paris, Jews 'are barred from entering certain areas'.
'Is this what life is like for Paris' Jews?' he reports. 'Is this what a Jew goes through, day in and day out, while walking to work or using public transportation?'
He adds the majority of French Jews 'do not flaunt their religion' and Jewish community leaders have urged them to wear hats as they walk to and from work.
But at night?
'Jews prefers to stay inside in the evening,' he says. 'It is safer at home.'

WAXING LYRICAL
Another Bowentown adventure. It is amazing how the Lord communicates with youwhen you are genuinely seeking Him. I am one of those strange people who enjoys
running – well, most of the time anyway. This poem shows how the Lord is not 2000
years behind the times, but communicates with us in ways that are relevant to our
circumstances and life.
ON THE RUN
Running down the beach, exhausted I was feeling,
Reaching the end, before long I would be keeling.
So I stopped, taking some time to look around,
It was perfect, sea beaten rocks there did abound.
Stark cliffs, forcefully thrusting through the sand,
So powerful there, showing God’s mighty hand.
But from wee crags, big trees were able to grow,
A loving God too, one who we can get to know.
I sat down on a rock to rest my weary legs,
The water is close by, my attention it begs.
As I watched the meandering of the sea
The Lord said, "It has a meaning for thee."
So I looked through the rocks at the lip of a wave,
Rolling gently towards me, as though through a cave.
"Was the tide going out or was it coming in?"
"It could it be the Spirit", I thought with a grin.
I watched the waves, resting on my perch of ease,
Flitting in, sliding out, look at us! they did tease.
"What is it Lord, you’re trying to show me here?"
"Bide your time, my son, no need to shed a tear."
Patiently I waited as the waves lapped on the beach,
The Lord had a lesson, me he was trying to teach.
Yes, the tides coming in – no, maybe it’s going out,
My decision making process, churned all about.
I can see it now, for the water’s coming close,
An answer revealed, before I become morose!
"But what does it mean Lord, please reveal it to me,
This incoming tide, the meandering of your sea."
"Now I have your full attention, the time is here,
For in the right direction, you I will now steer.
The waves are those of My Spirit, my son,
With the tides of life, in and out, they do run."
Yes now I see, how the waves ebb and flow,
Like moves of the Spirit, they come and they go.
But the longer I sat, the more persistent they became,
Greatly increased in power, it was no longer a game.
The Lord said, "This is what happened, over the times,
For My Spirit is always with Me, He perfectly rhymes.
My Spirit’s tide was out, for many hundreds of years,
But now is coming in, will put to rest, man’s fears."
His Spirit’s tide returned in a captivating flow,
First it would come in, then out it would go.
Sometimes in more, then sometimes less,
But always seeking, God’s people to bless.
As I sat on my rock, His words became clearer,
Then a picture of my life, the waves ever nearer.
For I’d sat back and watched The Spirit, oh so long,
Did I need Him in my life, was it right, was it wrong?
Sitting there, the waves lapped playfully round my feet,
Ever closer now, for The Spirit’s coming, me to greet,
Then suddenly my special, bigger wave came,
Engulfing me, so I would never be the same.
When it happened in my life, came as a great shock
To myself and others. Thought I would never unlock
My heart to the wonders of The Spirit you see,
No, there was no hope for a stalwart like me!
So onto the top of my rock, did I hop,
There was no way now, I could stop,
For the wonders of scripture, I was eagerly seeking to behold,
Standing on the rock of Jesus, He would me, start to mould.

A DAVID MUSING
This week has seen the annual 'Art Deco' celebration of the reconstruction of our beautiful City of Napier after the devastating 1931, 7.8 magnitude earthquake and fire that levelled most of the town and surrounding areas and took 250+ lives. Amazingly the city centre was rebuilt in 2 years, in the Art Deco style of the day. Now Napier is known as the 'Art Deco capital of the world'.Many of us dress up in the gear of the times and we enjoy some fun times.
I was going to write how the earthquake 'made Napier', for several thousand acres of land rose 2 metres out of the sea, to provide the housing areas where most of us live. Which is amazing.
However, instead, I need to say that I used to be reluctant to 'dress up' as others do. But I have had a change of heart in recent times and now enjoy having joined the many who do. Scrub up not too badly I am told! Maybe will show a photo later to prove it - one way or the other! LOL!
In God too, so many of us get stuck in our traditional ways of thinking and acting. We want God to use us but we are too afraid to step out and let Him do so - just in case we might make a mistake and look foolish. Whether it is in our beliefs or our actions, stepping out in faith, altering the status quo, is difficult for most of us to do.
But as I have found with Art Deco, fully participating in what God has available to us, while initially challenging is most rewarding, and required for the development of His kingdom upon the earth.
Will you hear and obey his kingdom call in your life today?
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
