WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO JESUS Part 1A PEOPLE OF GODLY LIVING
Jesus did not teach theology as we understand. He simply set out the way His followers were to live in what is known as the 'sermon on the mount'. It was not a sermon as we understand it but a teaching to His disciples.....
The Beatitudes
5 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:1-12)
He explained the ways of God by using illustration and parables that the people understood from everyday experience.....
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-15)
Reading the teachings of Jesus in Matthew, Chapters 5, 6 and 7 give the instructions for godly living, both then and now. These chapters provide the behavioral foundation upon which our lives are to be based. Membership of the kingdom is not defined by Catholic or Protestant, Calvinism or Armenianism, Pre or Post-Trib whatever, but by how we walk with Jesus, in conforming to His image and ways.
A PEOPLE OF LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO THE FATHER AND EACH OTHER
Jesus gave one all-encompassing commandment that we are to live by.....
37 Jesus replied: â€â€˜Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-9)
Without love motivating our thoughts and actions, we are merely living an empty religion.
A PEOPLE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
As we will see as we proceed, the difference between the Jesus church and the religious church is the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.â€..... 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:16-21, 25-6)
Without the Holy Spirit transforming us, leading and guiding us through life, our 'Christian' walk is merely manmade religion.
A PEOPLE WHO WOULD SHARE HIS TEACHINGS WITH OTHERS
Jesus came at a specific time in history when it had become possible to share knowledge, ideas and faith with all the known world through travelling upon the network of roads built throughout the Roman Empire. It was now possible, in a practical way, to share the message of the Great Commission.....
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.†(Matthew 28:16-19)
When this didn't generally happen, except for Paul and his cohorts, Jerusalem was destroyed in AD70 and the people were forced to flee 'to all nations. God has His ways of seeing His instructions obeyed!
JESUS CRITICIZED THE RELIGIOUS ESTABLISHMENT
Throughout the Gospels Jesus was highly critical of the religious establishment of His day. The Pharisees and Rabbis were criticised for legalism, pride, hypocrisy, greed, religious control, false teachings and much more. A few, sample comments follow.....
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. 29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. (Matthew 23:23-9)
Could this still apply to the church of today? For, in essence, 'religion', like Jesus, never changes. The criticisms and opposition He had from the religious establishment of His day, remain the same. How would Jesus be treated if He walked into your church today?

658. CAN I TRUST YOU
Little Rodney, 4 years old, walked down the beach, and as he did, he spied a matronly woman sitting under a beach umbrella on the sand. He walked up to her and asked, "Are you a Christian?"
"Yes," she replied.
"Do you read your Bible every day?"
She nodded her head, "Yes."
"Do you pray often?" the boy asked next, and again she answered, "Yes."
With that he asked his final question, "Will you hold my sweets while I go swimming?"
657. MISSED THE CALL
The Pastor asked an energetic young man to help him fill some vacancies in the Sunday School teaching roster. After looking over the church roll and determining who was available, he asked one man if he would help the Pastor by teaching a class of young boys.
The man responded saying, "Let me think about it and pray over it. I'll let you know."
After a week without the man's response, the man was asked again if he would take the job of teaching the young boys.
Again, the man replied, "Let me think and pray about it. I'll let you know."
After another week and still no response, when the man was asked again if he would teach the class of young boys, he replied, "I don't think I can take the class, because I don't
think I am being called to teach."
The young man replied, "What do you mean you aren't called to teach? I've called you three times myself." - Lawrence Brotherton
656. PRACTICAL MEMORIES
There was a woman who spent some months serving God in Kenya. On her final visit to a remote township she attended a medical clinic. As the Maasai women there began to sing together, she found herself deeply moved by their hauntingly beautiful harmonies. She wanted to always remember this moment and try to share it with friends when she arrived
home.
With tears flowing down her cheeks, she turned to her friend and asked, "Can you please tell me the translation of the words to this song?"
Her friend looked at her an solemnly replied, "If you boil the water, you won't get dysentery."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Are fish more abundant in cold ocean water or warm water?ANSWER: Most people would guess that ocean life is more abundant in warm water. They'd be wrong. All kinds of marine life - plant and animal - are more abundant in colder waters. Many of the best fishing grounds are found in the coldest places. Why? Cold water holds more dissolved gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, which marine plants need to photosynthesize. The more plant food you have, the more fish and sea mammals you'll see. Antarctic waters are simply teeming with microscopic plankton that attracts whales and fish. (Do fish feel the cold?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Are there really such things as elephant graveyards?
Answer Next Week.

75. THE SECOND OPINIONA man runs into the vet's office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead. The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion.
The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog's body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail poking and sniffing the dog's body and finally looks at the vet and meows. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead too."
The man is still unwilling to accept that his dog is dead.
The vet brings in a black Labrador. The lab sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, and finally looks at the vet and barks. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the lab thinks your dog is dead too."
The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, "$650."
"$650 to tell me my dog is dead?" exclaimed the man....
"Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $600 was for the cat scan and lab test."

77. ANIMAL ALPHABET
There's a little known animal that begins with the letter X. It's actually a Greek swordfish, spelled X-I-P-H-I-I-D-A-E, and it's pronounced ZIFF-EYE-IH-DEE. As Paul Harvey might say, "Now for the REST of the story." I'd like to present an ABC primer on animal puns.
AARDVARK a million miles to put 26 animal puns in alphabetical order. I'd BADGER you and I'd keep CARPing on the subject, until I have no i-DEERs left. I'd have no EGRETs, however, as I FERRET out more animal puns. If necessary, I'd even GOPHER broke. Some may say it's a HARE-brained attempt; but, IGUANA tell you, I'm no JACKASS -- and I KID you not. I'm not doing this for a LARK (although maybe just a MITE). So don't NAG me. In fact, you OTTER try to PARROT me. But don't QUAIL from the challenge. After all, you don't have to be a RACCOONteur. So just SALMON up some courage, before you take a TERN for the worse. Don't be afraid of people saying to you, "UNICORNiest person I know." Stop crying and VIPER nose. Then say, "WALLABY a son-of-a-gun," and start singing, "Zip-a-dee doo-dah, XIPHIIDAE ay." Soon you'll be a YAK-of-all-trades, and can put all of these animal puns in a book called "Who's ZOO."

Nik Wallenda's Historic Skywire Walk across Grand Canyon Amazing on Several Levels
Aimee Herd-Commentary : Jun 24, 2013 : Skywire.Discovery.comBCN Breaking Christian News
With nearly every step, Nik is fervently praying, live on TV beamed all around the world and online to millions hanging on every inch of progress.
Nik Wallenda When I first watched 7th generation high-wire walker Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls it was without any audio feed. Always having been a huge fan of the breathtaking waterfall, I thought it was an incredible feat. (Photo: Discovery Channel)
And then I watched the replay of Nik's walk, this time with the audio feed enabled.
Though I'd been a Believer in Jesus for over two decades prior, Nik's obviously (and audibly) strong faith and reliance on the Lord as he took each perilous step was akin to being in a Holy Spirit-filled revival meeting for me.
There's just something about fearlessness and faith in action.
Naturally, I was excited for his next wire-walk—this time over the immense and spectacular gorge that becomes the Grand Canyon a little further on from where Nik would cross.
Elders of the Navajo Nation graciously gave Nik permission to execute the feat on their land.
Nik Wallenda This would be equally as astounding as wire-walking over Niagara, except the fact that Nik would not be fettered with any tether (or any net below) at his own request; the stakes were amped to the utmost. (Photo: Discovery Channel)
The stunt would literally be life or death, as the 1,500 foot drop would likely be terminal.
And a good portion of the world would be watching live (with a 10 second delay) thanks to the Discovery Channel, which acquiesced to Nik's request to leave behind the tether he was made to wear over Niagara.
As the countdown for the start of the walk drew near, I hopped onto the highly populated #Skywire Twitter feed. Most of the comments indicated—along with excitement—great concern and tension regarding the walk… "This is crazy!" "Why would he risk his life with his family watching?"
Nik Wallenda I would've been feeling something similar no doubt, except I've been reading Nik's book, "Balance" and I knew this is definitely something of a calling for him. One that his family understands because it's what they've always known. (Photo: Discovery Channel)
Not unlike Joseph in the Bible, God has given Nik destiny-filled dreams from a young age; he is just pursuing what the Lord has evidently purposed for him to do.
This is pretty apparent from the way God seems to be using the gifting and talents He's bestowed on Nik, and how this Christ-centered man, who has known the wire-walking passion from age 2, is giving God the glory at every opportunity.
At a time in our country's history when a state has to pass a law to be able to use the term "Merry Christmas" without legal ramifications, and a cheerleading team is sued for writing Bible verses on their home game banners; here is Nik Wallenda thrilling the world with his passionate pursuit of both God and the skywire.
Nik Wallenda With nearly every step, Nik is fervently praying, live on TV beamed all around the world and online, with millions watching, hanging on every inch of progress.
As he looks down, Nik praises Jesus for His awesome creation, as the gusts kick up Nik asks over and over for the Lord to "calm these winds by the authority of Jesus." With every painstaking step over the canyon 1,500 feet down, he prays "Thank You Father, praise You Jesus."
The Presence of God is intense.
There is also the devoted and vitally important relationship Nik has with his earthly dad that is broadcast to every viewer, as Nik's father Terry—who scrupulously and meticulously oversees the engineering of the cable his son walks on—encourages him through a headset the entire way.
Nik Wallenda "Take your time," says his father near the end of the walk, "I am" answers Nik, but as he steps back over the land on the other side with his family in view, he breaks into a wire-jog, grabs off the 30' long, 40 lb. balancing pole with ease and jumps to the ground kissing it in victory. (Photo: Discovery Channel)
The relief felt around the world is palpable.
This week major decisions are being wrestled with in the US Supreme Court—decisions that could completely change this country in ways we likely can't yet or would want to imagine.
But, last night, for 22 minutes up on a skywire perched 1,500 feet above perilous beauty, Nik Wallenda led another revival meeting with the world watching and intently listening.
An amazing, inspiring act of fearless faith in action.
Thank you Nik.

WAXING LYRICAL
I have been really blessed with a tremendous wife. Just took me twenty plus years toreally recognise it! The poem tells a little of the story of our first 30 years together. Now 43! Should write some more - but can I remember! LOL!
LIFE WITH THE WIFE
We met at a camp, some thirty-two years ago,
What life was to bring, little then did we know.
Yes, there was a spark, that brought us together,
A mutual attraction - more than just the weather!
Maybe more notice, of the weather should have been taken,
For just a few days later, the City of Wellington was shaken,
By the ‘Wahine Storm’, the like of which is so rarely seen,
A hurricane! Prophetic of our marriage, could it have been?
Still, two years later in the month of May,
Kathy and David married, on a cloudy day.
In Palmerston North Baptist, our vows were said,
The journey of marriage, lay tantalisingly ahead.
Two years on, after tripping right around the world,
Exploring our roots. In Britain, they were unfurled.
We came home, ready to start our family of four,
Two sons soon, followed later, by two sons more.
So twenty years of our marriage, it did pass,
Oh me, oh my, the time! How it does go fast!
Me, taking the male path of ‘girls, gold and glory’,
The wife ‘at home with the kids’, you know the story.
Turning my back on God, over this time,
The vibes between us, they ceased to rhyme.
Resulting in tears, flavouring the baking you see,
Kathy gently sobbing, while making muffins for me.
By now our business, we had lost,
In stormy seas, vigorously tossed,
But then, I did come to the Lord,
For Kathy, that did strike a chord.
To Tauranga City, here we came,
Life never again, to be the same.
The Lord developed new love in me,
For Him, my wife, and all the family.

A DAVID MUSING
On Saturday night I formally became a "couch (chair actually!) potato"!I do not watch much TV generally, other than the news and sport. This normally does not take up too much of my time. However, we recently subscribed to our country's satellite TV service and now receive 5 full time sports channels, among many others. (We finally succumbed to the temptation of a half price deal for 12 months!)
On Saturday night through to Sunday morning there was so much live sport from all around the world (where our night is your day) that I sat and watched for 8 hours before going to bed!
Oh dear! That is a days work! Could I read my Bible, or pray, for that long? Mmmmm! No, if I am honest! How easy it is to be trapped into the attractions of the world!
I know that next week there will be another game, and that the results mean little in the game of life, where there are far more important issues to be faced.
What will be my response? How about yours? A wake-up call!
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
