'THE WORDS OF JESUS' NOW AVAILABLE FOR PDF DOWNLOAD

My heart’s desire is to become more like Jesus. For the past 6 months, the Lord has prompted me to read and reread the 4 Gospels, over and over again, which I have done many times.

Now He has prompted me to write out the recorded words Jesus spoke, from His childhood, through His time of ministry, after His resurrection, and finally, through John, after His ascension.

NOT A BIBLE SUBSTITUTE

Of course, there are many words missing from the Gospel presentation, being those of the respective writers. A brief explanation of the situation immediately follows the subject title. If you are unsure of the writings, look them up. Bible references are given. Where there are words in between those Jesus says, His next saying commences on a new line. Verse numbers have also been removed, as Jesus didn’t speak these.

RECORDED EVENTS INCLUDED ONLY ONCE

Many of the events and stories are recorded in more than 1 place. References have been given for all locations. However, each episode in His life has been included only once, using the most detailed record of the particular conversation. The books the actual words have been taken from are identified by the use of different colours.

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

Finally, in order to follow through the life of Jesus, I have to the best of our current understanding, recorded these words in chronological order. We skip between gospels, for some periods in the life of Jesus are recorded in one place, but not another. Also, Jewish gospel writers, unlike those of our culture, record history on a theme basis, rather than on a time line. Hence some chapters are listed out of numerical order.

WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now proceed to the 20th century which, as we all know, was noted for outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Surely all would now be transformed by the Spirit and the bride church produced. Of course, we now know the reality, where there has been greater splits and divisions than ever before. God weeps!

THE EARLY 1900'S

PARNHAM AND THE ZION CITY REVIVAL (Part 1)

In May 1906 Charles Parnham moved back from Texas to Baxter Springs, Kansas. He received a request to go to Zion City, and went with several co-workers in mid-September.

TROUBLE IN ZION CITY

Zion City, was established by John Alexander Dowie (pictured) in 1901 on the shores of Lake Michigan, round 40 miles north of Chicago. Dowie, known for a dramatic healing ministry, envisaged Zion as a Christian city from which missionaries would go out round the earth. Many dedicated believers from throughout the USA relocated there, dreaming of living in a Christian Utopia.

The dream was crushed when, in 1906, political strife and financial mismanagement plunged the city into corporate bankruptcy. Dowie and one of his lieutenants struggled for political control. The people utterly despaired. In the Federal Court a judge gave control of all Zion's industries to a receiver, who ordered an election for an Overseer. Dowie encouraged his followers not to vote, so Voliva won the election. The election did little to calm the citizens, many of whom had lost their life's savings. Bitterness, confusion, anger and strife, reigned.

Parnham arrived with his team arrived, having a meeting at Zion's impressive Elijah Hospice hotel on that same night. By the end of the week they were conducting 3 services daily with hundreds attending.

"TIL KINGDOM COME"

Voliva was not happy with Parnham's success. Reportedly, he phoned Parnham to ask how long he was staying. "Til kingdom come" was the reply. As the Elijah Hospice was under city control he was able to oust Parnmam from there. Voliva then rented every auditorium in the city so Parnham would have nowhere to go.

Parnham responded by organizing meetings in 5 homes concurrently, from 7pm until midnight. He would travel from one meeting to the next to preach, each night, in in a horse drawn buggy.

The crowds increased flooding from the houses onto porches and lawns. The Daily Sun of Illinois reported that thousands were attending. Many experienced release from bitterness, despair and anger upon being baptized in the Holy Spirit. They saw visions and hundreds responded to the call of full time ministry.

DIVINE HEALING AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

An important feature of the revival was the permanent merger between the divine healing teachings of Dowie and the Spirit baptism experience of Parnham. Through this powerful combination, several independent healing evangelists emerged from the Zion City Revival.

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order.

Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

How Many Will be Saved? (Luke 13:22-30)
A question put to Jesus.

“Try very hard to enter the narrow doorway, because I tell you that many will try to go in, and won’t succeed. Once the house owner gets up and closes the door, you’ll be standing outside knocking on the door, saying, ‘Master, please open the door for us.’ But he’ll reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you’re from.’
Then you’ll say, ‘But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets!’ He’ll reply, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you’re from. Get away from me, all of you who don’t do what’s right!’ There will be crying and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you are thrown out. People will come from the east and the west, the north and the south, and they will sit down to eat in the kingdom of God. For the last shall be first, and the first shall be last.”

Pharisees Warn Jesus About Herod (Luke 13:31-5)
And his intention to kill Jesus.

“Go tell that fox that I will go on driving out demons and healing people for today and tomorrow, and on the third day I’ll achieve what I came to do. Well anyway I must continue on my way for today and tomorrow, and the day after. For it wouldn’t be right for a prophet to die outside of Jerusalem!
“Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have wanted to gather all your children together just like a hen does with her chicks under her wings, but you refused! Look, your house is left desolate, and I tell you that you won’t see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Healing a Man With Dropsy (Luke 14:1-6)
Speaking to the Pharisees leader at his house.

“Does the law allow healing on the Sabbath or not?”
“If your son or your ox happened to fall into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you go and pull him out immediately?”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

GOD'S REST

20. God’s rest is a gift, but resting in God a way of life.

21. God’s rest is learned, not earned.

22. God’s rest is free, not earned. Rest in God is also free, but learned.

23. Gods rest is freely given, but rest in God must be freely learned.

24. A believer receives God’s rest, but a disciple rests in God.

309. Man seeks to strive for God. God wants us to rest in Him. Couldn't be easier, couldn't be harder!

310. God's rest is to be sought not only in death, but firstly in life!

311. Lord, teach me not to strive!

312. At work we seek rest. In God we strive to work. Something is wrong here!

313. Resting in God seems too easy to be religious. It is! And it isn't!

1304. The more we work on ourselves, the less opportunity God has to work in us.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

29. EVEN MORE VULLETIN BLOOPERS
*** The music for today’s service was all composed by George Friedrich Handel in celebration of the 300th anniversary of his death.

*** Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community.

*** The 8th Graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the church basement this Friday at 7pm. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

*** The concert held in the Fellowship Hall was a great success. Special thanks are due to the minister’s daughter, who laboured the whole evening at the piano, which as usual fell upon her.

*** Don’t let worry kill you. Let the church help.

28. WHO'S LYING?
A minister told his congregation, "Next week I’m going to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17."

The Following Sunday he asked for a show of hands as to how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. (Shouldn’t need to continue this but…..)

The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only 16 chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who invented aspirin?

ANSWER: Aspirin wasn't really invented, but discovered. Scientists in 1829 discovered that a compound called salicin in willow plants relieved pain. But they weren't really the first to understand that. Hippocrates, who lived sometime between 460 BC and 377 BC, wrote about the use of powder made from the bark and leaves of a willow tree to treat headaches, fever, and pain. (Cheaper but enough work to bring on a headache!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What percentage of its body weight can a pelican consume in a single meal?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

709. SWEET TOOTHS
Every second, Americans collectively eat one hundred pounds (45kg) of chocolate. (Called ‘Death By Chocolate’.)

710. HOW MUCH!
An average person in the US uses approximately fifty-seven sheets of toilet paper each day! (Some less, some even more!)

711. KIDS FEAR
The fear of vegetables is called Lachanophobia!.. (Most kids develop this!)

GREAT GROANERS

6. THE HUMBLE BUMBLEBEE
Consider, if you will, the case of the awkward bumblebee who became ill while gathering pollen but continued to work. Unfortunately, he thus infected all the flowers with his virus. The consequences are recorded in the annals of horticulture as the blight of the fumble bee.

7. WILLIAM TOLD
William Tell was not only a great patriot and a great archer, he was also a great cook.

One day, after he had prepared a new dish for his friends, he said, "I think there is one or more spices missing. What do you think?"

Their answer was, "Only thyme, Will Tell!"

8.ELEPHANT STEW
1 Elephant, Medium Size
2 Rabbits (Optional)
Salt & Pepper to taste
Brown Gravy

Cut elephant into small bite-sized pieces. This should take about two months. Add enough brown gravy to cover. Cook over a hot fire for about four weeks. This will serve 3800 people. If more are expected, two rabbits may be added, but do this only if necessary as some people do not like to find a hare in their stew.

9. BUNNY ON ICE
A lady opened her refrigerator and saw a rabbit sitting on one of the shelves. "What are you doing in there?" she asked.

The rabbit replied: "This is a Westinghouse, isn't it?"

The lady replied, "Yes."

"Well," the rabbit said, "I'm westing."

10. PIGEON POWER
I was driving to work this morning when my car stalled in the damp weather. I was sitting in the car at the side of the highway, contemplating my next move, when a pigeon flew down and landed right in the middle of the hood of the car. It seemed fairly tame, and I soon became fascinated in watching it up close as it strutted around and made cooing noises.

A few minutes passed, and two more pigeons flew in and joined the first bird. Pigeons seem to be attracted by crowds, and soon I was sitting there with a whole hood full of pigeons, all cooing loudly and beginning to change the color of my hood.

Gradually I noticed that the birds seemed to be trying to get my attention, which was unnerving, since I had always regarded pigeons as rather stupid birds. But, sure enough, several of them were dragging a piece of rope around on the hood, and several others were flying out in front of the car and returning to the hood.

All of a sudden, I realized what they were doing, so I yanked open the door and wildly chased them all off.

No way was I going to be pigeon towed!

Former archbishop of Canterbury: We are a post-Christian nation

Exclusive: Former archbishop of Canterbury says Britain is no longer a nation of believers, as Telegraph poll reveals Christians are reluctant to express their faith

By Tim Ross, Cole Moreton and James Kirkup

8:30PM BST 26 Apr 2014

Britain is now a “post-Christian” country, the former archbishop of Canterbury has declared, as research suggests that the majority of Anglicans and Roman Catholics now feel afraid to express their beliefs.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Lord Williams of Oystermouth says Britain is no longer “a nation of believers” and that a further decline in the sway of the Church is likely in the years ahead.

While the country is not populated exclusively by atheists, the former archbishop warns that the era of regular and widespread worship is over.

His stark assessment comes after David Cameron ignited a national debate over the place of religion in British public life. The Prime Minister urged Christians to be “more evangelical” about their faith and claimed that Britain should be a more confidently Christian country.

His remarks, in the run-up to Easter, provoked a furious response from atheist and secular groups, and prompted a succession of senior politicians to give their views, culminating in Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, calling for the disestablishment of the Church of England.

Þ More than half the public – 56 per cent – regard Britain as a Christian country, a figure which rises to 60 per cent among men and 73 per cent among the over 65s;

Þ Almost two-thirds of practising Christians appear to be frightened of speaking out about their beliefs. The poll found 62 per cent saying the rise of religious fundamentalism had made Christians afraid to express their faith;

Þ Widespread concerns also emerge over the perceived vulnerability of Christians in the UK to abuse or discrimination. Sixty-two per cent of people who hold Christian beliefs but do not worship regularly say they feel Christians are given “less protection” than other religious groups by the state;

Þ Overall, 52 per cent of respondents described themselves as either practising or non-practising Christians, while a further five per cent said they belonged to another faith group. Some 41 per cent said they were not religious.

In the interview, Lord Williams, now master of Magdalene College, Cam-bridge, accepted that Britain’s “cultural memory” was “quite strongly Christian”.

“But [Britain is] post-Christian in the sense that habitual practice for most of the population is not taken for granted,” he said. “A Christian nation can sound like a nation of committed believers, and we are not that.”

The former archbishop, who remains a member of the House of Lords, continued: “It’s a matter of defining terms. A Christian country as a nation of believers? No.

“A Christian country in the sense of still being very much saturated by this vision of the world and shaped by it? Yes.”

Lord Williams suggested that there may be “a further shrinkage of awareness and commitment” as a result of a lack of knowledge about Britain’s Christian legacy among younger generations, under the age of 45.

There may be opportunities for younger people to bring “a certain freshness” to the question of faith because they will not regard Christianity as “the boring old stuff that we learned at school”.

He rejected the suggestion that British Christians have been persecuted, although he acknowledged that some individuals have had “a rough time” as a result of the “real stupidity” of some organisations. His comments are likely to fuel the political controversy which erupted when the Prime Minister made his most outspoken comments about his Christian faith since becoming Conservative leader.

Mr Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, responded to the debate last week by suggesting that the Church of England should be formally disestablished from the state.

WAXING LYRICAL

Written over several weeks, (some years ago now) this poem was the culmination of several months of looking and looking, and looking, for premises for another recycled clothing shop in our sister city, 20km away. Everything happens in the Lord's timing!

THE BUILDING

Look, look, look,
It's all it took,
Not by the book,
Nor how to cook.

Look at one,
Yes, its done!
Too much mon,
It's no fun.

But this week?
More to seek.
Find no leak,
Must be meek.

Offer Tuesday,
Answer Friday.
Delayed Monday!
Relaxed today.

More delay,
Here stay.
Only pray.
One day!

Met landlord,
Seeming accord.
All aboard?
Monday Lord!

Contract signed!
Grateful mind.
God's kind,
We dined!

All's well,
Ring bell.
Clothes sell?
Months tell!

Thanks Lord.
Bon-accord.
Praises afford,
Welcome aboard!

A DAVID MUSING

It is the best part of a year now since the Lord told me to create a publication of His words, THE WORDS OF JESUS, in chronological order.

It has been a long task. From 'challenges' varied, from sourcing a translation I could use, to time spent setting up our new clothing shop, Chez Labelle.

Interestingly, the Lord's hand was even found in the delays, as it wasn't until February that the Free Bible Version that I have used become available on the internet! The lord's timing is perfect. For I had struggled to update older, non-copyright versions, to modern English that you and I - and God to us - converse in.

For our God did not remain hidebound in a time warp of the language of the time of William Shakespeare and the King James Version! He is the God of today! And He speaks to us in a relevant way to today. He has surely learned 'txt and Twitter spek' too!

My prayer today is that this publication, found at.....

http://www.wwj.org.nz/pdf/wwj46p52.pdf

..... will help you further deepen your relationship with Jesus as you hear Him speak to you through His words and life.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
