NO PLACE LIKE HOME?

After 12 weeks of travel, it will be good to get back home to all the things one is comfortable and familiar with. Hopefully, our cat 'Girl', may even remember me. Perhaps even the kids too! To see my mother will be good, and my friend Graham, who surrepticiously got engaged to Jude, without my permission, while I was away! Yes, catching up on life that continues day by day, until we are called away on that final trip to our eternal home.

Returning, it will be so very easy to slip back into a comfortable routine. Doing a good thing here and a good thing there, the days, months, the years, will pass rapidly. For I will be back in my comfort zone.

But one thing I have found out in life is that comfort zones are of the devil, not of God. Wow, that's a rash statement, David! But, let's think about it. God is a God of change. For He desires us to become the image of Jesus. And I know that that requires a lot of change in me! But the devil says, "No problem, you're okay. Life is comfortable. Everything may not be perfect, but 'the devil you know'....."

And then, all too soon, comes the day when we make that final inevitable trip to be with Jesus and we find out, too late, that we are not in His image - or anywhere near it. For we have been fooled by the enemy to spend our life in the comfort zone of the world. His world!

So as Kathy and I return to the comforts of home, which we will enjoy, I am determined not to let them seduce me into complacency and stagnation. For my desire is to become more like my Jesus. How about you?

FROM YOU - TO ME - TO YOU

Dear David
I would like to respond to Pete Bradley's posting on the Hebrew names of God/Jesus. There seems to be an increasing fascination among Christians with the Hebrew names for God,Jesus, and a variety of other biblical characters and items. Whereas I see nothing fundamentally wrong with addressing the Lord as 'Adonai', for example, I become decidedly uncomfortable when folk who do so start regarding this practice as 'more correct' than the rest of the Body of Christ who are quite happy to talk to the Lord in their own language.(I am not for one moment insinuating that brother Pete Bradley is one such, I am merely trying to point out some of the problems that have arisen in groups who hold this view.)

I am a South African (no rugby-related comments, please!), and I have become increasingly concerned about the trend of some local Messianic groups--of which less than a third
are often Jewish--to stress this type of esoteric knowledge, making a person who knows the right jargon like calling Eve 'Chavvah', Matthew 'Mattityahu', Peter 'Kefa', John 'Yochanan', and Paul 'Sha'ul' sound super-spiritual. The first problem, however, is the number of popular opinions as to what exactly our Saviour is to be called. I have heard 'Yeshua', 'Yehoshua', 'Yashua', 'Yahwehsua', and now 'Yahushua' offered as the real Name above all names. So what exactly IS his Name? If his parents spoke Hebrew (the may
very well have rather spoken Aramaic) and gave Him the Hebrew form of the name (which they probably did) only the first two options, i.e. 'Yeshua' or 'Yehoshua', would merit serious consideration. These two names are Hebrew and actually occur in the Hebrew Bible. The other forms are names invented by folk with a special agenda and who know very little, ifany, Hebrew. Jewish Christians, by the way, call Jesus 'Yeshua'.

A worse problem is the name 'YHWH'. I'd love to hear someone actually say 'YHWH' (I suppose a Welsh tongue could find its way around that!). Again, the forms 'Yahweh' and the less probable 'Jehovah' are mere speculation, since no one alive on this planet today knows exactly what vowels were part of the Name and how it was pronounced -- not even the Jews. ('Yahweh' seems to be afairly unanimously accepted proposition.)

The second problem is if the Hebrew form of the Name were so vital for us to be able to call on the 'correct' Name, why did Paul (and all the other writers of the New Testament) quite happy to use the Greek form 'Iesous' (from which we got our English 'Jesus' via Latin 'Iesus') when proclaiming the Gospel to the Gentiles? Why does Paul rite "Therefore God ('Theos', not 'Elohim') exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus ('Iesous', not 'Yeshua') every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ ('Iesous Christos', not 'Yeshua hamashiach') is Lord ('Kyrios', not 'YHWH' or'Adonai'), to the glory of God ('Theos', not 'Elohim') the Father ('Pater', not 'Av' or'Abba')" (Phil 2:9-10)? Surely if the Greeks were taught by Paul to recognise 'Iesous' asthe 'Christos' of 'Theos' and therefore 'Kyrios', we in the Anglophone world can't be that far off the track by calling 'Jesus' the 'Christ' of 'God' and therefore 'Lord'? I was saved and forgiven and changed and filled with the Holy Spirit by putting my trust in 'Jesus Christ' as my Lord and Saviour, long before I ever knew that some called Him ('Yeshua' and his Spirit 'Ruach haqodesh'). I also know plenty of Spirit-filled Zulus who were saved by calling on the Name of 'uJesu'. I thank the Lord that He speaks my language,too!

My point? Don't let's get sidetracked into issues that really aren't issues. Let's rather focus on loving the Lord our God with all our heart, our soul and all our strength and
our neighbour as ourselves.

I have very much enjoyed reading of your time in Nigeria as I spent many years there, growing up, my parents having been missionaries with SUM. The very names Kano, Jos etc stir me and bring back so many memories - my sister and I went to a boarding school called Hillcrest in Jos. My husband and I re-visited the country in 1990 so I know what you mean about the state of the roads, the traffic etc. It has been a very troubled country with so much tribal fighting and poverty but I'm glad to hear it is so
spiritually rich.

A SCOTTISH EXPERIENCE

A few days ago we drove from Aberdeen on the East Coast of Scotland, to the Isle of Skye in the West, (via Inverness and Loch Ness, the home of the elusive 'Nessie'!)
to visit our Daughter-in-law Catrionas, parents.

The islands off the West Coast of Scotland have likely experienced more 'Revivals', over the past 200 years or so, than anywhere else on earth. Seemingly one about every 10 years.

Why is this? Simply because they have been a God fearing, hugely prayerful group of people. Until more recent times, daily scriptures and prayers were a part of life even for non-believers!

Unfortunately, the old ways have gone and sadly, with it, the frequency of revivals. A message for us all.

ANOTHER SCOTTISH EXPERIENCE

Travelling back from the Isle of Skye through the Scottish Highlands, where unfortunately, the heather was not yet in bloom, we stopped at the side of the road at a small sign saying 'Footsteps'.

Catriona led us up a path to where an evengelist had preached to the local villagers over 100 years ago. He hadn't received a friendly reception, being pelted with stones by the locals for his efforts. In frustration he told them he wold prove that God is real. "If you look here in the future you will see that grass will never grow where I am standing!"

And so it is to this very day' over 100 years later! He must have had little feet though, for the bare patch is quite small, but it stands in sharp contrast to the green grass that surrounds it.

A Scottish experience of the power and faithfulness of God!

WOMEN NOT 'INDEPENDENT ECONOMIC UNITS'

A paper by London School of Economics economist Catherine Hakim challenges the feminist assumption that women should all be seen as 'economically independent agents'. Hakim identifies a 20 - 60 - 20 percent split in women's work-lifestyle preferences. She writes: 'A substantial minority of women, 20 percent, remain home-centred and family-centred in their values and lifestyle preferences. Roughly 20 percent are work-centred and careerist in the same way that men are said to be work-centred and careerist. Around 60 percent of women are adaptive, and the exact percentages will vary from one country to another and one region to another because these are estimates rather than fixed points.'
In other words, the reality of women's lives shows that some have aspirations for paid employment, others for rearing children at home and a large group are 'adaptable'.

A DAVID MUSING

As this is being sent to you through cyberspace, Kathy and I will have completed leg one of our long, 6 leg, 43 hour trip back home to New Zealand. We fly from Aberdeen (Scotland) to Amsterdam (Holland), Minneapolis, to Los Angeles (Both USA), Tahiti, Auckland (NZ) and finally home to Napier.

We leave Aberdeen at 6:30am on Monday morning and arrive at Napier at 2:30pm on Wednesday afternnon. No, it's not 2 1/2 days, as we always lose a day on the way home, but we do pick up the 11 hours Scotland is behind New Zealand. Complicated, isn't it! But flying, tiring though it may be, sure beats swimming! Or sailing for 6 months in small bobbling boat, as our forbears had to do only just over a century ago! Am sure pleased I live today!

So until next week when we will greet you from home, after having had, I am sure, a beautiful roast pork dinner, this is Kathy and David signing off from 'bonny Scotland'.
