TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'
A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 21 weeks of PGIM)FROM “ORGANIZED†TO “ORGANIC†(Continued)
We saw 7 weeks ago.......
"under the Old Covenant there was a separation between the Priests and the people, something which re-entered the Christian church through the Roman Catholics and despite attempts to get rid of it through the Reformation, effectively is still with us today, in so many ways."
Then 6 weeks ago.......
At the time of the death of Jesus, a miracle took place (the curtain in the Temple torn from top to bottom opening up, once again, direct access for us to the Father) signifying the change from the Old Covenant to the New. For it was the direct result of, and response to, what happened when Jesus died on the cross.
So what then, are the implications of this change in Covenants?
Over the past 5 weeks.....
1. WE NOW HAVE A PERMANENT SACRIFICE MADE ON OUR BEHALF
2. SALVATION HAS BECOME A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
3. THE KINGDOM IS FOUND WITHIN US
4. IMPLICATIONS OF THE KINGDOM WITHIN
5. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CHURCH
a. THE CHURCH IS NOT THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION
This week.....
b. GOD'S CALL IS TO 'GO OUT', NOT TO 'COME IN'
The prime, most ungodly, result of the creation of a church structure based upon buildings, paid clergy and programmes has been that the church has developed, over nearly two millennia now, an inward focus rather than outward action.
From the majestic Cathedrals of earlier times, designed to represent man's idea of heaven to the people, to present sanctuaries to which we are invited to come in, in order to experience God and escape the evil world, the church has developed an inward focused mentality.
Why is this? Put simply, the church would otherwise go 'without'! Without congregations the buildings would be empty! Without congregations to give, the clergy would not be paid! Without congregations, the programmes would be unattended! So there is a strong, even magnetic establishment force, aimed at getting people into churches and to retain them once they have come in. This has led to a territorial battle, not between street gangs, but between churches, together with the world with its enticements, to desperately hold on to congregants, so that they may continue to operate!
Of course there are many, many sincere and wonderful people within churches round the world, with a real heart for the Lord. But sadly, the basic foundation upon which the church is currently based is not Jesus, but structures, both physical and human based.
What then did Jesus command us to do in order to advance the kingdom.....
The Great Commission
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.†(Matthew 28:16-20)
First of all he commanded us to GO.....
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. (Luke 10:1-3)
He trained the twelve disciples in the same manner.....
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.†(Mark6:6b-11)
To do what? MAKE DISCIPLES. What is a disciple? One who is committed 100% to their Lord.....
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. 34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.†(Luke 14:25-35)
Making disciples is what Paul did.....
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. (Acts 14:21-22b)
And where to? To ALL NATIONS. Initially the discipled were in Jerusalem.....
7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7)
Finally Paul got to Rome.....
Arrival at Rome
11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. (Acts 28:11-14)
Other of the disciples went even further afield. 'Doubting" Thomas no longer doubted His Saviour and Lord, eventually being martyred in India!
Of course, I am not saying that everyone has to go to Africa or India as a missionary and build churches there. That is the 'organised' way of church thinking, not the 'organic' kingdom way. The church desires to replicate itself in it's own image, to set up branches of the particular denomination or grouping, in another place.
The spreading of the kingdom comes individually, from one person to another, through personal example, by conviction of the Holy Spirit to the one ministered to, followed by personal discipleship. Their relationship is to be a personal one with Jesus, not through a church or person. Yes, where possible, we are to gather together to encourage and support each other, but our primary focus is always to be on Jesus, our Saviour and Lord. We can all be kingdom disciples where we live. The harvest field is everywhere around us.
An example. Particularly for ministers. We have many requests to become associated with, members or representatives of, Walking With Jesus Ministries. All are declined. Yes, we associate with many people around the world. Hopefully, we can learn from and support each other. We do not have a ministry. The ministry belongs to Jesus. We endeavour to be led by, and obedient to, Him. Of course, we have others whom we trust who are welcome to advise us and correct us when we go astray, for none of us hears 100% from the Lord all the time. Again, we look to Jesus for our guidance and provision. We would encourage you to, as well. For He will guide and lead you too, if you allow Him.
This is the way of the kingdom.

FROM THE WORD
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two"After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’ But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.†The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.†He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.†At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.†Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.â€" (Luke 10:1-24)
The Return to Antioch in Syria
"They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,†they said. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia, and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. And they stayed there a long time with the disciples." (Acts 14:21-8)
The Apostles Persecuted
"Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. “Go, stand in the temple courts,†he said, “and tell the people the full message of this new life.†At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported, “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.†On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this. Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.†At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,†he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.†Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead—whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.†When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. Then he addressed them: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.†His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ." (Acts 5:17-41)

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM1028. Religion formalises the spontaneous informality of God's kingdom.
1029. God's kingdom 'upskills', religion removes the 'ups'.
1030. Religion is really 'the opiate of the priests'.
1031. To get closer to God we need to swap the bonds of religion for the liberation of His kingdom.
1032. Religion creates its own standard mould of monotonous mediocrity. God breaks moulds!
1033. Religion is centred upon man, the kingdom, upon God.
1034. Religion is the outcome of the institutionalisation of a God given vision.
1035. Religion is based upon rules, God's kingdom upon obedience.
1036. Religion seeks to control the Spirit of God which His kingdom releases.
1037. Religion controls, God's kingdom releases.
1038. Religion seeks to define an infinite God. By definition, it is doomed to failure.
1039. Religion seeks to interpret the answers to life found in God's kingdom. Surely a direct approach is best.
1040. As religion goes, God's kingdom grows.

629. THE MODERN CHURCH
The parish not only has an Internet web site, the parish council has discussed petitioning the bishop to change the parish name to "All Saints Domain"
Everyone in the parish assumes everyone knows what "domain" means
People without email addresses are known as "the needy" An April Fool's Day joke on the pastor, several of the teenagers hid their pagers around his office, then called them all
simultaneously.Apparently it did not startle him. He said he felt like he was at Sunday liturgy.
During coffee and doughnuts after services, people are overheard wondering if confession by email would be 'licit". Someone thinks 'licit" is the name of a new software company.
A petition is circulation to partition the prayer room, creating a 'beepers-on' section.
To quiet fussy 2-year-olds, handing them pagers on 'vibrate' is more common than handing them Cheerios.
Five-year-olds actually do say "deliver us some email" during the Our Father rather than "deliver us from evil".

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Do sword swallowers really swallow the sword?ANSWER: It's not a trick: they really do swallow the sword. It's not easy though. Sword swallowers must relax the throat muscles and keep them completely relaxed while the sword is inside. The swords are dull, but without a steady hand – or sword - they can do damage to the throat, oesophagus, or stomach. (Wouldn’t want to sneeze half way!)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: In terms of chemical composition, what substance does human blood most closely resemble?
Answer Next Week.
879. PURE COFFEE
Coffee contains over 1,000 chemicals in every cup. Of these only 26 have been tested, of which half have caused cancer in rats. (A cup of coffee for anyone?)
880. QUADS
In the normal population, there are 94 females born to every 100 males. Amongst quadruplets however, the ratio is 154 females to 100 males. (Early female bonding?)
881. LIVE FEATHER DUSTERS
In the ‘good old days’ live chickens used to be dropped down chimneys to clean them. (Weren’t the good old days so much better than the present?)

137. CAR ALARMSI was with a friend in a cafe' when a noisy car alarm interrupted our conversation.
"What good are car alarms when no one pays any attention to them?" I wondered aloud.
"Some are quite effective," my friend corrected me.
"Last summer, my teenager spent a lot of time at the neighbors'.
Whenever I wanted him home, I'd go out to the driveway and jostle his car."
138. CINDY
I overheard two children discussing their selection in the video store.
One boy took Disney's CINDERELLA off the shelf, pointed to the drawing of
the title character on the cover, and said,
"Oh, she's really good. I saw her in ALICE IN WONDERLAND."
139. HURT AND HURT
My husband was bending over to tie my three-year-old's shoes. That's when I noticed my son Ben staring at my husband's head. He gently touched the slightly thinning spot of hair and said in a concerned voice, "Daddy, you have a hole in your head. Does it hurt?"
After a pause, I heard my husband's murmured reply, "Not physically."
140. CHECKING IT OUT
We had spent the day moving from our farmhouse into our new house in town.
Early the next morning, a Saturday, our 3 1/2-year-old ran into our bedroom to wake us up.
I dressed him and told him to play in the yard and to quit bothering us.
About 20 minutes later, he came running back.
"Mommy, Mommy," he exclaimed, "everybody has doorbells - and they all work."
141. IMPORTED
The customer in the Italian restaurant was so pleased that he asked to speak to the chef. The owner proudly led him into the kitchen and introduced him to the chef.
"Your veal parmigiana was superb," the customer said. "I just spent a month in Italy, and yours is better than any I ever had over there."
"Naturally," the chef said. "Over there, they use domestic cheese. Ours is imported."

BIBLE TRIVIA (About The Bible)
THE ANCIENT GREEKS OBTAINED THEIR SUPPLY OF PAPER FROM THE PORT OF BYBLOS ..........in what is now Lebanon. Their word for book, biblion (the singular form of biblia) was derived from the name of this port. From this we get our English word Bible, meaning the 'Book of books'.

A REVELATION OF....... THE AMAZING TABERNACLE OF MOSESThe first modern revelation of the importance of Moses Tabernacle as being the pattern of a godly walk, and one of church development and life, came out of the Latter Rain Movement, after World War 2.
In more recent times the teaching has been neglected, but it is still applicable today. And the Lord is today, giving even more revelation about it, as we move still closer to the end of the age.
Yes, an understanding of Moses Tabernacle is vital for every Christian with a heart to know God and His plans in a deeper way.
I pray that you will find it as illuminating, challenging, yet encouraging, as I have in my life.

WAXING LYRICAL
Life is a battle when we are walking in God's will for our life, for the enemy doesn't like it. But we must never forget that we have the victory - even though it sometimes may not seem like it!WHEN BAD THINGS ARE GOOD
There is a man, I do know,
Who in God, desires to grow,
When something bad in life, does come along,
He's not now sad, for it makes him strong.
When satan tries to destroy his day,
He can now tell him to go away,
Has learned that, when doing God's will,
Satan will run you, through his mill.
He will accuse you of being blind,
And put evil thoughts in your mind,
A mighty battle now does take place,
Before you go on to win the race.
While satan's antics seem so real,
They're an illusion designed to steal
God's vision and purpose from our life,
Continually forcing us into strife.
The time to worry I have found,
Is when the devil is not around.
For when we proceed on our own way,
He takes time off to go and play.
He'll try his tricks on another one,
As our God, he tries to outgun.
So bad things are good, when we're in God's design.
Defeated satan - you have no power, us to decline!

A DAVID MUSING
Tomorrow we are going to visit Kathy's mum, in another city 180km from here. It will take us approximately 2 hours to drive each way. This morning I emailed David, a friend of mine in Kenya, and indicated that it would take a lot longer on most African roads. For there, potholes rule! Maintenance is minimal.
Maintenance of our roads is an ongoing process. We complain about road works, but of course, still want the benefits of them!
Life in Jesus is much like that too. We need to spend time in the Word, and personally with Him, if we are to maintain our road of life! Sometimes we complain about spiritual maintenance programme too!
In the end though, we reap what we sow, to put this in Biblical terms. In more modern parlance, may your journey be smooth on the tarmaced road of life! May your potholes be little ones and the scenery superb!
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
