WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

THE IMPACT OF EMPEROR CONSTANTINE'S CONVERSION

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

Much traditional church teaching would say that the conversion of the Emperor Constantine in AD312 led to the spreading of Christianity throughout the extensive Roman sphere of influence in the world. Regrettably, while this may have been true in form, the true essence of what Jesus taught - a personal relationship with Him through the Holy Spirit was lost. The church now became another organ of the state. For example, of the Council of Nicea, the modern historian Hans Kung has recorded in 'Christianity: Essence, History, and Future'.....

Constantine used this first council not least to adapt the church organization to the state organization. The church provinces were to correspond to the imperial provinces, each with a metropolitan and a provincial synod. In other words, the empire now had its imperial church!

Initially, Constantine granted special favours to the church, and built churches modeled on the civic auditoriums of the day. Elevated throne-like seating for the state appointed bishop were provided along with rows of pew like seating for the congregation, making congregational involvement impractical. Liturgy and worship, once plain and personal, now became modeled on the pomp and ceremony of the Imperial Court.

When Constantine died in 337, his sons continued and intensified the favoring of the church. In 381, the new emperor, Theodosius I, made Christianity the exclusive religion of the state. According to human logic, this was a wonderful event for the church, but it actually resulted in hordes of unconverted pagans coming in, bringing with them their heathen ideas and immoral practices.

One who appalled by this terrible state of affairs was John Chrysostom (347-407), patriarch of Constantinople. He complained that the character of the church of his day was no different from that of the marketplace or theater.....

If anyone is trying or intending to corrupt a woman, there is no place, I suppose, that seems to him more suitable than the Church. And if anything is to be sold or bought, the Church appears more convenient than the market. Or if any wish to say or to hear any scandal, you will find that this to be had here more than the forum without.

He stated, when mourning the loss of spiritual gifts in the formal church.....

The obscurity is produced by our ignorance of the facts referred to and their cessation.

The church became a political organization, modeled along the state lines, with personal worship being replaced by formalized sacraments, presided over by ecclesiastical officials.

This provided an ideal climate for doctrinal disputes (which continue to the present day) to emerge and develop, for again, form rather than substance took over. Basil
of Caesarea, bishop of Cappadocia (370-379), likened it to a great naval battle being fought by men who "cherish a deadly hate against one another." He continued.....

But what storm at sea was ever so wild and fierce as this tempest of the churches. In it every landmark of the Fathers has been moved; every foundation, every bulwark of opinion has been shaken; everything buoyed up on the unsound is dashed about and shaken down. We attack one another. If our enemy is not the first to strike us, we are wounded by the comrade at our side.

The battle for Holy Spirit influence in the church was lost, but the Spirit of God cannot be denied. He now continued His influence through individuals, namely the 'monastics', who literally withdrew from the world.

So we can continue to say that.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

The 'Sermon on the Mount' forms the basis of the 'life teachings' of Jesus. Every follower of Jesus should learn, and live out daily, the teachings of Matthew, chapters 5-7.

Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-7:29, Luke 6:17-49)

The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12, Luke 6:20-23)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16)
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law (Matthew 5:17-20)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Murder (Matthew 5:21-6, Luke 12:58-9)
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

BELIEVERS v DISCIPLES

236. A believer praises the Lord in good times, the disciple at all times.

237. The Holy Spirit resides in the believer but shines through the disciple.

238. A believer loves God with heart and mind while a disciple commits the will.

239. A believer loves God and others, but they are the disciple's life.

240. A believer lives in hope, but for the disciple, God's hope is certain.

241. A believer seeks forgiveness for sin but the disciple also determines not to walk that path again.

242. A believer has faith in God but the disciple's faith is tempered in the fire of testing.

243. A believer loves the Lord, but the disciple's love is unconditional.

244. The believer serves the Lord in strength, but the disciple is made perfect through weakness.

245. God is part of the believer's life, but the central focus of the disciple.

246. A believer forgives, but the disciple also forgets.

247. A believer communicates with God at their own convenience, but the disciple's heart is open to the Lord at all times.

430. A believer knows, but the disciple does.

1077. Believing is free, discipleship costs your life.

TUESDAY TEACHINGS

THIS WEEK: A REVELATION OF....... 3 KINGDOM AGES

Very often we get trapped, by taking for granted what we superficially see. So it was for me with the Bible. I saw the Old Testament and the New. "Well, that must be it," I thought. The Old Covenant followed by the New. It's simple, it's obvious, but it doesn't fit in with God's pattern, as I understand it.

For those who have read other of my writings will know that God works in threes. As He manifests Himself in three ways, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, (exactly how depends on whether you are a Oneness, Two-ness or Trinitarian believer!) so He normally operates in patterns of three in His dealings with us, His people. Therefore I have always had a difficulty accepting the two Testaments as reflecting God's pattern as such.

One day however, the Lord showed me that the Old Testament is not really a single entity, but can be split into two at an unexpected but logical place, as we will see shortly.

Today, as I was reading the Word, He started to show me many patterns reflecting the development of His kingdom through these three stages of His Word. It is helping me understand the whole in a way that I have not appreciated previously.

So let's embark on a journey together and see what we can find out about what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do in the future. Each step forms a logical progression in His plan that has been in existence from before time began.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

790. YOUNG WISDOM!
A Sunday school teacher asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?"

Little Johnny replied, "Because people are sleeping."

789. THE PRAYER REQUEST
Leroy went to a revival at a local church and listened intently to the preacher.

After awhile, the preacher asked anyone with needs to be prayed over to come forward to the front of the altar.

Leroy got in line and when it was his turn, the preacher asked, "Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?"

Leroy replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for my hearing."

The preacher put one finger in Leroy's ear and he placed his other hand on top of Leroy's head and prayed and prayed and prayed for a miracle.

After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, took a few steps back and asked, "Leroy, how is your hearing now?"

"Leroy replied thoughtfully, "I don't know, It's not until next Wednesday."

788. THE GATE OF HEAVEN
Inscribed in stone over the great front doors of an old church being restored was: “This is the Gate of Heaven.”

Just below it someone had placed a small cardboard sign that read: “Use Other Entrance.”

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: How does a frog cope with freezing temperatures?

ANSWER: Frogs have several strategies for surviving winter, depending on the species. Some hibernate, slowing down their body's metabolism and ‘sleeping’ away the winter. Some aquatic hibernating frogs can even hibernate underwater! Terrestrial frogs usually hibernate on land. To avoid freezing to death, frogs have another trick: antifreeze. The frog may become frozen, but it doesn't die. It appears dead, but the high levels of glucose in its vital organs prevent complete freezing. It will stop breathing and its heart will even stop beating, but when temperatures rise, its organs will start up again. (Now why can’t I do that?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: How long can honey be stored and still safely eaten?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

812. LITTLEST LIGHT
A "photon" is the smallest possible amount of light that can be produced. It's the basic unit of light. (Can it be photographed?)

813. MOSQUITO FOOD
Is not blood, as most of us would imagine, from personal experience. Female mosquitoes (males don’t bite) will obtain blood from humans and animals, but only to nourish their eggs. Their actual food consists of nectar and other plant juices. (Tell that to my wife! The popular mosquito egg nourisher!)

814. LEARNED TRAVELLER
Abdul Kassem Ismael, grand vizier of Persia in the first century, is said by historians to have owned about 117,000 volumes. Whenever he travelled, he carried his books with him on about 400 camels. The camels allegedly were trained to walk in a particular order so that his books could be kept in alphabetical order. (Volume 117,001 may well have been the book that broke the camels' backs.)

"It's the worst job I ever had."

"Guilty."

"That'll be fifty dollars and a warning from the court." Katz stepped down and the two judges shook hands and changed places. "How do you plead?" asked Tyler.

"Guilty."

Tyler reflected for a moment. "These reckless driving cases are becoming all too common of late," he pointed out. "In fact, this is the second such incident in the last quarter hour. That'll be two hundred dollars and ten days in jail."

"What! You don't have the fingers!?" said the doctor, "You should have brought them to me. We have all kinds of operations we could have done like microsurgery and stuff.
We could have put them back as good as new."

"But Doc, I couldn't pick them up."

Youth Lead the Way in Manado, Indonesia for a Citywide Evangelistic Campaign

Thousands of youth lead the way in Manado, Indonesia for a citywide evangelistic campaign involving world evangelist Andrew Palau

MANADO, INDONESIA (ANS) -- In Manado, Indonesia, the Christian community is thriving. Yet, like so many other places around the world, young people are turning away from their faith in record numbers. Distracted by secular culture and worldly influences, they have come to be known as the lost generation.

Nearly 8,000 miles across the globe, Andrew Palau knows the story all too well. As the son of renowned evangelist Luis Palau, he spent his childhood watching his father proclaim the Gospel around the world. Yet, Andrew never believed the message for himself. He lived a life of rebellion until the age of 27, when he finally embraced the truth of the Gospel at his own father's evangelistic campaign in Jamaica.

Since that life-changing decision more than 20 years ago, Andrew has devoted his life to sharing the Good News Gospel at every opportunity. Taking the message of Jesus and his own story of redemption to Manado, Andrew had the privilege of joining with hundreds of local believers to accomplish the massive evangelistic festival, August 26-31.

This youth-led campaign took months of planning and prayer. It included the partnership of hundreds of local churches, city officials and thousands of Indonesian believers. It also involved international organizations from the United States and Australia. Compassion First, a non-profit organization with a strong presence in Manado, was instrumental in bringing the campaign to the city and connecting LPA with the right leaders.

Ministry partners Vic Murphy and Jon Andrus, along with others, also joined in the effort, helping share the Good News through action sports at many of the events around the city. Also joining Andrew and the Palau team for the festival were a number of local music groups, including the all-girl group CherryBelle and pop idol star Sammy Simorangkir. Australian worship leaders Planetshakers, Salem Baptist Choir from Chicago, and Dave Lubben led the crowd in worship.

The result - a sea of people packed MegaMas Field in the heart of the city each night of the festival as the crowds clamored to hear more about the son of Luis Palau, his years of rebellion, and his unconventional journey to faith.

At the end of the message each night, people of all ages across the crowd eagerly raised their hands in surrender to Christ and met with decision counselors stationed across the venue. On the second night, an elderly man near the back of the crowd wearing a green Manado CityFest volunteer T-shirt looked on with tears in his eyes as a young boy signed a card indicating his decision for Christ.

By the end of the festival and week of outreach events, more than 3,500 decision cards were received and 7,000 copies of the Gospel of John had been distributed. Many of those who made decisions took to social media to express their joy, with one participant thanking Andrew for "telling us that Jesus still loves us no matter what."

"I was so blessed at the festival to see so many people accept Jesus and respond to the invitation by Andrew," festival volunteer Daniel Sompotan said. "It was truly amazing, and so beautiful. I could not stop crying."

Leading up to the festival included a week of outreach events planned and facilitated by local believers to bring the festival to many levels of society. Festival events began on August 25 with Andrew speaking at a number of church services. Andrew spoke to well over 6,000 people at these services and following one service, a young university student came up to speak to the Palau team. She had no idea why she had decided to come to church that day, but she claimed that Andrew's message spoke directly to her and was thrilled to give her life to Jesus.

The next evening was the official opening ceremony for the festival at MegaMas, in which Harley Mangindaan, officially welcomed the Palau Association to Manado. The opening ceremony kicked off the Manado CityFest Community Exhibition. The exhibition was designed to attract people to the festival venue, with over 70 different Christian and non-Christian service organizations that included biker and skateboard groups, punk communities and Manadonese arts and crafts. The exhibition also featured local artists, 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, traditional flag dancing teams and break dancing competitions.

Throughout the week, events were held at different locations throughout the city, all heavily covered by local media and often featured on the front page of local newspapers. Andrew shared the Gospel with students at 'CampusFest' at Sam Ratulangi University and at a smaller scale version of the festival held at the local prison.

"Even if you spend the rest of your life and die in here, Jesus Christ can revolutionize your life today," Andrew shared at the prison. "He can bring joy to your life daily and give you confidence about eternity!"

As local churches begin the follow-up process, the Palau Association is finalizing preparations for a country-wide campaign in Ethiopia, widely considered the unofficial capital of Africa. Andrew Palau will lead an outreach in the largest city in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, in November, while five partner evangelists will lead outreaches in five other influential cities in the country.

WAXING LYRICAL

An introduction to the weird world of David Tait! You may like him (me – this is
confusing!) or you may not, but he (I!) is what he is. (I am!)

'TIS ME'

’Tis me, David John is the name,
Born for business to be my game.
For 30 odd years, I did give it a go,
Often successful, other times low.

Ten years ago now, it collapsed all around,
Misery in my life, did plentifully abound.
So I gave my heart to the Lord, you see,
For by now, I had come to the end of me.

In the time since then,
My God I have sought and fought,
In these years of ten,
He has of me, taught and caught!

He restored me in the business world.
At the same time, my desires He curled.
Now he has me writing this book,
I trust you find it worth the look.

David John is the one I would like to be,
A ‘King David’ with a heart after his God,
If only the Lord would say the same of me,
A real sinner, but still worthy of his nod.

The Apostle John too, has a special place,
In the shadow of Jesus, he did run his race.
Given revelation of our heavenly destiny,
Proved his love for Jesus was a reality.

Now when God gives you a book to write,
Should you show yourself in the best light?
Surely people, God won’t want to offend,
Our image, it’s all-important in the end.

But my friend, that is not my style,
Sweet savours, my readers to beguile.
To be honest, revealing warts and all,
For me, that has always been the call.

I’m far from being the perfect man,
If I were, God wouldn’t need a plan.
Not needing to turn me around, into his image,
Life would be boring for Him, or so I envisage!

A DAVID MUSING

We are certainly being trained in waiting! Kathy and I regarding our business sale which took 10 months. We finish at the end of the month, next Monday.

And all of New Zealand is still waiting with trepidation for the conclusion of the America's Cup, which I talked about last week!

Last week Team New Zealand needed to win 3 more races, Team Oracle USA, 8. This week has only seen 4 completed races, due to unsuitable weather conditions. These have been evenly split, 2 each. So we are now on 'match point' as we have been for the last few days.

One race was abandoned when we were leading by 1500 metres, with the New Zealand boat just failing to reach the finish in the allotted time of 40 minutes, by around 2 1/2 minutes! A real let-off for you Americans reading this! Today (Sunday here), both races were abandoned due to unfavourable wind conditions in San Francisco.

Tomorrow (Sunday US time, Monday in NZ) must surely be the day when the world's oldest sporting trophy returns to New Zealand!

Waiting is stressful! But God's promise is that it will not be more than we can bear or bare! May we use our training time to get closer to Him.

PHOTO: Both boats up on foils, enabling them to travel at twice the speed of the wind. Incredible technology!

Until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
