HOW 'JESUS-LIKE' ARE YOU?
There is great difference between Jewish and Greek based Western cultures, one that has caused huge misunderstandings and problems in today's church. It is found in the different cultural interpretations about the integration or separation of the three parts of our human makeup, our mind, emotions and will which, in the Christian world, we call the 'soul'. These 3 aspects of our human nature form our personality and which, along with our obviously varying physical bodies, are the things that make you different from me.
In traditional Jewish culture, the ways one thinks feels and behaves are expected to be as one, to agree with each other.
In Western culture we separate the three, so it is acceptable when how we think, what our feelings are, and what we do to, all too often, be at variance with one another. The half jocular saying, 'do what I say, not what I do' would be completely unacceptable to God fearing Jews.
A classic example is found in 'religious' training.
If you were training to be a Rabbi, you became a follower of the Rabbi you were apprenticed to. When the Rabbi stood up, you stood up. When the Rabbi gestured, you gestured likewise. When the Rabbi ate, you ate. Your aim was to become exactly like your Rabbi.
Generally speaking, in ministry today, we go to a Bible School or Seminary where we attend classes to learn the particular brand of theology the institution teaches. We are taught in an intellectual, theoretical manner by a range of experts, each knowledgeable in their particular discipline. The character and lifestyle of the presenter is either unknown or not regarded as importantly as the knowledge they impart. Knowledge is separated from papers in, and perhaps experience of, practical social action, which is separated in turn from spiritual guidance and counseling. We graduate with a paper qualification, but no guarantee that our lives have been molded into a likeness of our rabbi, who is Jesus.
The original disciples followed their rabbi.....
Jesus’ First Disciples
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!†37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?†They said, “Rabbi†(which means Teacher), “where are you staying?†39 “Come,†he replied, “and you will see.†So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. (John 1:35-9)
The disciples 'followed' Jesus. They lived with Him, they learned from Him, they had their personal battles but finally, (all except John, who was boiled in oil and survived) ended up dying for Him too!
Of course, we don't have the physical Jesus with us today. Jesus understood that. That is why He got the Father to send us the Holy Spirit to help us grow into His likeness.
23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:23-6)
When Jesus said we are 'to believe', He did not mean just intellectually. Lets have a look at the meaning of 'believe' as described in the Amplified Bible. Belief is not just an intellectual, 'believe in Jesus but live how you like' acceptance, as understood by Western culture, but an all enveloping, life changing experience, as the Amplified Bible here describes.....
Jesus replied, 'This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the one Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in his Messenger] (John 6:29)
My friend, how much like Jesus are you? How much am I? It certainly is a sobering question for the both of us!
If the church of today is to become the pure white bride for whom Jesus is returning, we need to both grasp and apply this truth of total immersion into Jesus. Our half hearted, intellectual faith needs to be replaced with a total, whole of life conversion experience and changed lifestyle.
Am I, are you, prepared to change today?
Jesus is calling.
FROM THE WORD
Jesus’ First Disciples"The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!†When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?â€
They said, “Rabbi†(which means Teacher), “where are you staying?†“Come,†he replied, “and you will see.†So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah†(that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas†(which, when translated, is Peter).
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.†Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.†“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?†Nathanael asked. “Come and see,†said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.†“How do you know me?†Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.†Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.†Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.†He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.†"(John 1:35-51)
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
"“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.†Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?†Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. “Come now; let us leave." (John 14:15-31)
"Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, you have been searching for Me, not because you saw the miracles and signs but because you were fed with the loaves and were filled and satisfied. Stop toiling and doing and producing for the food that perishes and decomposes [in the using], but strive and work and produce rather for the [lasting] food which endures [continually] unto life eternal; the Son of Man will give (furnish) you that, for God the Father has authorized and certified Him and put His seal of endorsement upon Him. They then said, What are we to do, that we may [habitually] be working the works of God? [What are we to do to carry out what God requires?] Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger]. Therefore they said to Him, What sign (miracle, wonderwork) will [c]You perform then, so that we may see it and believe and rely on and adhere to You? What [supernatural] work have You [to show what You can do]?" (John 6:26-30 Amplified)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
CHARACTER1089. Character to a Christian is as water to a ship. Without it we are left high and dry!
1090. To be as one with the character of Jesus is our highest call.
1091. To believe in Jesus is wonderful, but to develop His character, divine.
1092. Many say, "Lord, give me faith." But I say "Lord help me develop my character" and faith will automatically come.
1093. It is easy to believe, but a godly character reflects the true disciple.
1094. Our character is truly visible in the reflection of our love for God and for others.
1095. Rather than asking God for gifts, develop character, and gifts will automatically follow.
1096. A sin forgiven is of the moment, but developing godly character lasts a lifetime.
1097. The only proven way to avoid sin is to develop the character of Jesus in our lives.
1098. Character is 'walking the talk.'
1099. Testing builds a godly character. Many Christians do their best to avoid both!
1100. As the church develops the character of Christ, so it will conquer the world for Him.
1101. To fulfil our potential in God we need to inherit His character.
1102. Character cannot be bought but must be developed through the trials of life.
1103. Salvation is instant, but developing godly character takes a lifetime.
1104. Feeling come and feelings go but character is eternal.
1105. An ounce of character outweighs a ton of enthusiasm, any day.

CRANWELLS CARTOONS
THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,†he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?†26 “What is written in the Law?†he replied. “How do you read it?†27 He answered: â€â€˜Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’†28 “You have answered correctly,†Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.†29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?†30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?†37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.†Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.†(Luke 10:25-37)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
390. EXPLAINING GOD
A teacher gave her third grade class an assignment to write essays on the topic, "Explain God." The following was turned in by one of her 8-year-old students...
One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth.
He doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way, He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to Moms and Dads.
God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime and meals. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or watch TV because of this.
Because God hears everything there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off.
God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy, so you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your Mom and Dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.
Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church.
Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and doing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him.
Jesus was good and kind like His Father and He told His Father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OKAY.
Jesus' Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore, He could stay in heaven. So He did. Now Jesus helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary only more important.
You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to hear you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.
You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong! And, besides, the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.
If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared in the dark or when you can't swim very good and get thrown into real deep water by big kids.
But you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.
And that's why I believe in God.
389. GARDENING GOD'S WAY
Plant three rows of peas:
Peace of mind
Peace of heart
Peace of soul
Plant four rows of squash:
Squash gossip
Squash indifference
Squash grumbling
Squash selfishness
Plant four rows of lettuce:
Lettuce be faithful
Lettuce be kind
Lettuce be obedient
Lettuce really love one another
No garden without turnips:
Turnip for meetings
Turnip for service
Turnip to help one another
To conclude our garden we must have thyme:
Thyme for God
Thyme for study
Thyme for prayer
Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.
There will be much fruit in your garden because you reap what you sow.

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: How can birds sit on electric wires without being injured?ANSWER: It's simple. In order to be electrocuted, the bird would have to touch two wires simultaneously or one hot wire and the ground at the same time. One wire won't do it. (You got it? The logic, not the wire.)

Jesus in the Rice Fields: China's Countryside Revival
CBNnews.comBEIJING -- Christianity is thriving in China. Even though sharing the gospel is illegal in the communist country, that hasn't stopped Christians from boldly proclaiming their faith.
CBN News recently joined one Chinese couple who are traveling the vast countryside to share the good news about Jesus Christ with their countrymen.
Exclusive Images of Revival
Duan Huilai said the images captured on his home video camera are proof that God is moving in China.
"This is the first time you are seeing pictures of Christians from the villages openly praising God," Huilai told CBN News.
Huilai, a Chinese evangelist, gave CBN News exclusive access to hours of video and pictures taken in dozens of locations across China.
The pictures show one thing in common: men and women of all ages being touched by the power of God.
"Everywhere I go, I meet people who are hungry for God and He is showing up," Huilai said.
Rural Life Challenging
Huilai and his wife are full-time evangelists. Since 2003, they've criss-crossed the Chinese countryside sharing the gospel.
"God called us to focus on the rural areas where life is often very difficult," Lin Aimin, Huilai's wife, said.
Difficult, yet simple in many ways. Huilai showed CBN News pictures of how people have been baptized in rural areas after they've accepted Christ into their lives.
"Sometimes I baptize them in a river," he explained. "Sometimes they are baptized in the back of a pickup truck. A couple of times I've conducted baptisms in the shower. Very often we just have to improvise."
Preaching Still Illegal
Sharing the gospel in China is still forbidden.
"I was arrested here a number of times," Huilai told CBN News as he pointed to a map of China.
Christian gatherings not sanctioned by the government are considered illegal.
"The government doesn't allow people who live in one city to travel to another city. We are mindful of the regulations," Huilai said.
Despite the government restrictions, China watchers say what's happening spiritually in the country is nothing short of remarkable.
"There are still masses of converts everyday in the countryside. It is very encouraging," said Peter, a man who has worked with China's so-called underground or house churches for decades. CBN News agreed to conceal Peter's identity to protect him.
"So many peasants in so many places are coming to Christ in large numbers," the man said, speaking from an undisclosed location.
"And the churches in many cases are maturing and getting beyond simple evangelism and reaching out to rural minority groups and unreached people groups," he said.
Mapping China's Christianity
It's a far cry from the dark days of the Cultural Revolution. Dr. Fenggang Yang is the director of the Center of Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue University.
"At that time, all churches, temples, and mosques were closed and no public religious service was allowed," Yang explained.
Chinese government data and international surveys now report millions of Chinese people are flocking to religions like Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam.
But it's Christianity that's experiencing the most dramatic growth.
CBN News obtained a map showing the stunning picture of Christianity's explosion across China's cities, counties, and villages.
"If the current trend of growth keeps the current pace, I think it is likely in the next 30 or 40 years China's number of Christians could reach really a high number similar perhaps to the U.S. or Brazil," Yang said.
Signs and Miracles
Huilai said the preaching of the word of God in the countryside is usually followed by miracles and healings.
"People who could never walk before begin walking," he said. "The blind see. I've even witnessed a man being raised from the dead. The healings and miracles we see each time we travel are amazing."
Huilai is a walking miracle himself. In the late 1990s, he and his wife lived in Budapest, Hungary, running a successful clothing company.
"We were making lots of money and living the high life," he said. "But I didn't know the Lord. I soon realized I needed something more than material success. I eventually gave my heart to the Lord."
Brush with Death
Six months after Huilai gave his life to Jesus Christ, he was viciously attacked by members of a Chinese mafia group in Budapest.
He showed CBN News the knife scars on his back, arms, and stomach that he says serve as reminders of God's protection and faithfulness.
"I was stabbed over 50 times and almost lost my life, but I know God spared me for a reason," he testified.
And perhaps this is it: The opportunity to reach the remotes parts of a great land with a message of hope and salvation found in Jesus Christ.
"I often preach in the government-sanctioned churches as well as underground churches and in both places we have witnessed the powerful move of God," Huilai said.
"Our prayer is that one day everyone in our nation will hear about Jesus Christ," he said.

WAXING LYRICAL
Yes, today's choices affect our eternal destiny. This poem just came to me as I was writing the PGIM newsletter. Aimed at me - aimed at you!CHOICE
Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly,
Delicious treats are in here for you to try!
Should I go in, or should I stay out?
Want to find out, what it's all about!
So into the parlour I go,
Looks delicious, I know,
The web is so sparkling white,
On it, I alight with delight.
Now I go to lift my front leg,
Stuck - locked as with a peg!
I struggle my leg to release,
By now, having lost my peace.
Shouldn't have come in!
Knew it twas a sin!
Now can't get away!
Am here to stay!
My energy does all go,
I'm in my dying throe!
Be you all warned,
About sin scorned!
Or you'll end up here just like me,
Death in a web, don't you see!
But Jesus came, His forgiveness to give,
By repentance, through Him, we can live.
So when you are caught in the enticing web of life,
Call out to Him, to extract you from your strife.
Then away from that larder undertake to stay,
And He will remain with you all of the day,
Instead of the web, in His kingdom do play,
When temptation comes, to Him let us pray.
The web of life, is very nice,
Seems full of fun and spice,
But it will get you and me in the end,
Eternity in hell we will spend,
Unless we turn and walk the other way,
Then with Jesus we may forever stay.
Life all is about choice,
How to use our voice?
In praising Him,
Or seeped in sin?
Yes, about this life we do muse,
But what, will you and I, choose?

A DAVID MUSING
What a week of variety! While some weeks just come and go with normal life, others stand out!Kathy and I returned from our holiday on Monday during which we had a great time seeing sights and then being with friends at a wedding in the deep south of New Zealand. The weather was kind (in the Southern Hemisphere it is the south that is cold) and the company great.
By contrast, on Wednesday, I had the sad task of telling my staff at 2 shops that they were being made redundant, due to poor sales forcing us to close their stores. They were remarkably understanding.
Then, on Friday, the Rugby World Cup started here in New Zealand. After years of buildup the rugby finally started! The opening ceremony was fantastic, a real showcase for New Zealand. Check it out here
The rugby too, has been of a generally higher standard in the early rounds, with the 'minnow teams' having improved substantially. And, of course, our local 'All Blacks' won their first game, and without injury, which is a big bonus, for rugby is a very physical game. We are looking forward to the next 6 weeks.
Life with Jesus often follows the natural pattern. Times when nothing much seems to happen, then other moments when we have major spiritual experiences.
May we in New Zealand not switch off in the spiritual to enjoy the natural. For you never know when our Lord is going to specially speak to you or to me.
I am ready and waiting Lord.
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours

ABOUT US
WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our websitewwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
