DAVID AND KATHY ARE SHIFTING TO KENYA TO LIVE! Part 5

Four weeks ago, I said that my wife Kathy and myself were shifting to Webuye, in Western Kenya, to live on a long term basis, from mid-2017.

SURRENDER

There is a beautiful song we love to sing, written by Judson W. Van DeVenter in 1896. But do we truly believe and do what it says?

I Surrender All

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

Refrain:
I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

The song finishes well, about blessing, but all too often, both in the song and in the Bible, we see the blessing, without the condition that goes with it. For all God's promises are conditional, conditional upon our obedience.

So here the condition is, Worldly pleasures all forsaken.

Kathy and I have committed to forsake the worldly pleasures of the beautiful country of New Zealand in order to travel into the unknown, in a way. No, we won't be eaten by lions, trampled by elephants, nor be much more likely to be killed by terrorists than we are anywhere in the West.

We are embarking on a new adventure, to a country beautiful in different ways, particularly so in the beauty of its people.

We also understand we will experience, in the words of the song.....

Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

When we are prepared to step out of the boat (airplane actually) of our lives and give ourselves 100 fold to Jesus, His joy and peace are there, even through the inevitable challenges faced when one steps out in faith, responding to God's call. It is never easy, but the rewards are eternal.

I well remember the challenge when I went to Africa for 2 months on 50 cents a day. After a week I was down to my last dollar, with seven weeks still to go! But the Lord provided! I left Africa with no money, but no debts. It was a real lesson to me, and a confidence builder in that I now know that when the Lord leads, He will provide, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I remember Peter, who was the only one of the disciples prepared to hop out of his boat.....

24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14:24-33)

Is God calling you to hop out of your boat today too?

Until next week - KARIBU!

Continued next week.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Second Rejection in Nazareth (Matthew 13:54-8, Mark 6:1-6)
When teaching in the local synagogue.

“A prophet is treated with respect except in his home town, among his relatives, and in his own family,”

Workers are Few (Matthew 9:35-8)
Talking to His disciples.

“The harvest is large, but there are only a few workers. Pray to the Lord of the harvest, and ask him to send more workers for his harvest.”

Sending Out the Twelve (Matthew 10:1-42, Mark 6:7-13, Luke 9:1-6)
After giving them spiritual authority and power.

“Don’t go to the foreigners, or to any Samaritan city. You are to go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Wherever you go, tell the people, ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ Heal those who are sick. Resurrect the dead. Cure the lepers. Drive out demons. You received freely, so give freely! Don’t carry any gold, silver, or copper coins in your pockets, or a bag for your journey, or two cloaks, or sandals, or a walking stick, for a worker deserves to be supported. Wherever you go, whatever town or village, ask for someone who lives according to good principles, and remain there until you leave. When you enter the house, give it your blessing. If the home deserves it, let your peace rest on it, but if it doesn’t deserve it, let your peace return to you. “If someone doesn’t welcome you, and refuses to listen to what you have to say, then leave that house or that town, shaking its dust off your feet as you go. I tell you the truth, it will be better for Sodom and Gomorrah at the Day of Judgment than for that town!
“Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
Watch out for those who will hand you over to be tried by town councils and will whip you in their synagogues. You will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, to witness to them and to the foreigners. But when they put you on trial, don’t worry about how you should speak or what you should say, because you’ll be told what to say at the right time. For it’s not you who will speak but the spirit of the Father will speak through you. Brother will betray brother and have him killed, and a father will do the same to his child. Children will rebel against their parents, and have them put to death. Everyone will hate you because you follow me, but everyone who endures until the end will be saved.
“When you’re persecuted in one town, run away to the next. I’m telling the truth: you won’t finish going to the towns of Israel before the Son of man comes. Disciples are not more important than their teacher; servants are not more important than their master. Disciples should be satisfied to become like their teacher, and servants like their master. If the head of the house has been called the head demon Beelzebub, then the members of his household will be demonized even more! So don’t be frightened of them, for there’s nothing covered that won’t be exposed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known. 27What I tell you here in the dark, declare when it’s light, and what you hear whispered in your ear, shout from the rooftops. Don’t be afraid of those who can kill you physically, but can’t kill you spiritually. Instead, be afraid of the One who can destroy you physically and spiritually in the fires of destruction. Aren’t two sparrows sold for just one penny? But not a single one of them falls to the ground without your Father knowing about it. Even the hairs on your head have all been counted. So don’t worry—you’re worth more than many sparrows!
“Anyone who publicly declares their commitment to me, I will also declare my commitment to them before my Father in heaven. But anyone who publicly denies me, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
Don’t think I’ve come to bring peace on earth. I haven’t come to bring peace, but a sword. I’ve come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Your enemies will be those of your own family! If you love your father or mother more than me you don’t deserve to be mine, and if you love your son or daughter more than me you don’t deserve to be mine. 38If you don’t pick up your cross and follow me you don’t deserve to be mine. If you try to save your life, you will lose it, but if you lose your life because of me you will save it. Those who welcome you welcome me, and those who welcome me welcome the one that sent me. Those who welcome a prophet because that’s what they are will receive the same reward as a prophet. Those who welcome someone who does right will receive the same reward as someone who does right. I tell you the truth, those who give a drink of cool water to the least important of my disciples will definitely not miss out on their reward.”

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

433. MY APPETITE IS MY SHEPHERD
My appetite is my shepherd; I always want.
It maketh me sit down and stuff myself.
It leadeth me to my refrigerator repeatedly.
It leadeth me in the path of Burger King for a Whopper.
It destroyeth my shape. Yea, though I knoweth I gaineth,
I will not stop eating for the food tasteth so good.
The ice cream and the cookies they comfort me.
When the table is spread before me, it exciteth me for
I knoweth that I soon shall dig in.
As I filleth my plate continuously, my clothes
runneth smaller. Surely bulges and pudgies shall follow
me all the days of my life and I shall be "pleasingly plump" forever.

432. ANDY
Sister Luella died and arrived in heaven. At heaven's gates she met Saint Peter.

St. Peter asked her what God's name was.

"Oh that's easy," Sister Luella replied. "God's name is Andy."

"'What makes you think His name is Andy?" St. Peter asked incredulously.

"'Well, you see at Church we often sing this hymn -- 'Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me.' "

431. OMITTED
A woman in her forties got married but was a bit nervous about her honeymoon.

Pastor Carl wanted to encourage her by sending a telegram with a verse of Scripture...
1 John 4:18 - There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.

But the Pastor's oral instructions to the church typist omitted, by mistake, the 1 before John and the telegram just read...

John 4:18 - For you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: How long can honey be stored and still safely eaten?

ANSWER: Apparently, honey can last forever, if stored well. The ancient Egyptians left honey, among other assorted luxuries, in burial chambers to make the dead happy. Some of it, unearthed in modern times, is still edible! (Though one wonders how they determine this. Are archaeologists eating the evidence?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is the sleeping sickness?

SOME FUN FACTS

285. PARROTING
Parrots, most famous of all talking birds, rarely acquire a vocabulary of more than twenty words. However, Tymhoney Greys and African Greys have been known to carry vocabularies in excess of 100 words. (Am lost for words!)

286. NATURAL POLLUTION
About 27 tons of dust rains down on the earth each day from space, making a total of almost 10,000 tons each year. (Must have dusty roads up there!)

287. EFFICIENT KILLER
Cougars can kill animals eight times their size. (A feed or three here!)

LIFE'S A LAUGH

105. FOLLOWED!
Before shipping out to Europe with the Army Air Corps during World War II, my father loaned his buddy $20.00. The two were assigned to different units and lost touch. Months later, my father's plane was shot down. Bleeding from shrapnel wounds, he bailed out and was greeted by German soldiers who took him as a prisoner. After a long train ride, little food, and days of forced marching, he arrived at his assigned stalag.

As he entered the compound, he heard a familiar voice. "You followed me all the way here for a measly $20.00?"

106. BEEP
A friend of ours was puzzled by the odd messages left on his answering machine. Day after day, friends and family would talk and then say, "Beep."

He discovered the reason for the joke when he decided to listen to his greeting. "Hi," it said. "I'm not in right now, so please leave a beep after the message."

107. WASH LAWYERS' MOUTHS OUT WITH SOAP
When it comes to frivolous lawsuits, fact can truly be stranger than fiction. Example:
The Bonaventure Town Center Club in Weston, Fla. has banned soap in its showers. Why? Lo and behold, people can slip in the shower and then file lawsuits. As the club's executive director, Bob Fedderwitz, has said, "We've been sued. We've settled. We've lost a lot of money."

So the club has simply turned its showers into soap-free zones. Not only has bar soap
been banned but also body wash, shampoo, hair conditioner and even shaving cream.
No wonder Americans are increasingly lathered up about lawyers.

108. JUNK MAIL
I do the water and sewer billing for a small city in Washington State. Customers complained about our postcard-sized bills--which they said looked too much like junk mail. So we decided to start sending full-sized bills in envelopes. The month before the switch, I had a note printed on the cards, announcing the change.

Two days later, I heard someone yelling at our receptionist, "Is this some kind of joke?" When the customer threw his bill upon the desk, I saw his point. The note was printed, "Coming soon! New Larger Bills!"

109. NO CHARGE
When I had a job at the photo-developing counter of a pharmacy, the film was sometimes developed incorrectly. If this occurred, we did not charge our customers. Once a man came to pick up his pictures, which were marked $0.00, indicating that not one of them had turned out right.

The customer asked to see the photos, and when I noticed the odd splotches of color all over the pictures, I apologized profusely.

"Oh, no, these are fine," he said happily. "I'm a microbiologist, and these are my bacteria cultures."

110. RUSH HOUR
During the "rush hour" at Houston's Hobby Airport, a flight was delayed due to a mechanical problem.

Since they needed the gate for another flight, the aircraft was backed away from the gate while the maintenance crew worked on it. The passengers were then told the new gate number, which was some distance away. Everyone moved to the new gate, only to find
a third gate had been designated for them.

After some further shuffling, everyone got on board, and as they were settling in, the flight attendant made the standard announcement, "We apologize for the inconvenience of this last-minute gate change. This flight is going to Washington, D.C. If your destination is not Washington, D.C., then you should 'deplane' at this time."

A very confused-looking and red-faced pilot emerged from the cockpit, carrying his bags. "Sorry," he said, wrong plane."

Muslim-Turned-Christian Author of 'Wholly Different' Says Islam Is a 'Rebellion Against the Bible'

BY BRANDON SHOWALTER , CP REPORTER
Feb 24, 2017

A former Muslim who received Christ 20 years ago is urging Americans to see the clear distinctions between Islamic and biblical values because the two are, she says, "wholly different."

An Iraqi Christian man from Mosul, who fled from violence in their country, reads a book at the Latin Patriarchate Church in Amman, Jordan, Aug. 21, 2014. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have fled their homes since the terrorist Islamic State group swept through much of the north and west of Iraq in June, threatening to break up the country.

Nahid "Nonie" Darwish, author of Wholly Different: Why I Chose Biblical Values Over Islamic Values, who was born in Cairo, Egypt, and raised adevout Muslim but now resides in Los Angeles and is an sincere Christian, believes the problem facing the West extends beyond radical groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

A veteran writer on these issues, the author believes Americans are at a crossroads and must engage the ideas underpinning the terror attacks that are being carried out by Muslims and injustices occurring in the Islamic world while not getting lost in obscurities about Muslims as a whole.

"It's not because Muslim people are bad or good," Darwish said in interview with The Christian Post. "It's very important that the West understand that."

Nonie Darwish, author of Wholly Different: Why I Chose Biblical Values Over Islamic Values
"We are talking about an ideology, not people," she insisted, noting that the mainstream media often "muddy the water" on this.

But when Darwish, and others, dares raise this issue, some claim that she also paints with too broad a brush, assigning the worst motive to Muslims rather engage in criticism of the ideas emanating from Islamic theology itself.

But this is a departure from past debates about other political creeds, she says.

And those values are not good, she reiterated.

Each chapter in the book showcases a specific aspect about the Bible and Christianity and how it contrasts sharply with the Quran and Islam.

Chapter 4, titled "The Truth Will Set You Free vs. Lying Is An Obligation," includes a bit of her personal journey, where she notes that when she arrived in the United States she learned more about her own religion in a few months than in a lifetime of education in the Middle East.

"At first the process was intimidating," Darwish writes.

"Muslims are often frustrated, not knowing what to say when asked what jihad is or what taqiyya [the Arabic term for deception permitting Muslims to lie under Sharia law], is. No committed Muslim can venture to tell the truth about those Islamic doctrines, not even to him or herself. Those who leave Islam, like myself, are the ones who simply could not continue with the lies," she explains.

Darwish told CP that she's particularly baffled by many on the Left — feminists in particular — and their willingness to defend a religion she came to the U.S. to escape, especially since their stated values on paper are so diametrically opposing.

"The leftists in the West like to call themselves liberal: 'I am for freedom, for democracy, for freedom of speech.' But really down inside them is an anger. Their position more of an anti-position than a pro-[position], more of a rebellion than an established ideology."

Yet what unites the Western secular left and the Islamic world, she contends in her book, is a common antagonistic spirit against biblical truth.

In Chapter 14 of Wholly Different, Darwish defines Islam in part as "a rebellion against the Bible."

The first cultural clash between Islam and the Bible did not occur between Europe and the Middle East, Darwish said.

"The first cultural clash," she said, "was within the Middle East. Six-hundred years after Christ, there was one whole area of the Middle East that was not Christian, and it was Arabia. Christianity was all over the Middle East by then. It was in Egypt, in the areas of Syria, Iraq, in Turkey. The Byzantine Empire was thriving and strong."

CP asked Darwish what she makes of noted moderate and liberal Muslim dissidents and academics like Zuhdi Jasser, Asra Nomani, and former Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali, now an atheist, whose book, Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now outlines how the Islamic religion should be reformed in order to coexist with Western, democratic norms.

"I salute these efforts," she said, but expressed pessimism about their potential to change anything significantly.

"Sixty-four percent of the Quran is talking about non-Muslims in a very derogatory way, with many passages calling for them to be killed since they are enemies of Allah," she said.

Darwish has been speaking in this manner since 9/11. She came to the Christian faith gradually, receiving Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 1997, just a few years prior to that fateful day. She told CP that she had always felt comfortable around Christians and when she first entered a church tears started flowing down her face and they didn't stop until after the service concluded and she left the building.

CP asked Darwish how she encountered the Lord while penning Wholly Different.

She explained that it took her whole heart and soul to do it and that she felt closer to Jesus after writing it.

"I just thank God every minute of the day for being in America which allowed me to touch a Bible and to know Jesus," Darwish said. "It is such a privilege be free to touch a Bible, to talk about it in public. And this is something that is forbidden if you live in the Muslim world."

"I see Christianity in everything. I see the biblical values in everything."

Darwish said she used to have in-laws in Berkeley, California, who were atheist liberals who, in her words, "hated American values, and wanted to change everything," but the way in which they lived in their home, she observed "was totally biblical."

"And they were unaware of it," Darwish told CP. "They attributed it to how smart they are, but in fact they should kiss the Bible and kiss the ground of this country that allowed them to live by these values. Because in other parts of the world, the values are so opposite."

WAXING LYRICAL

It is amazing how verse can come to your rescue when prose fails! Well - maybe! You be the judge!

INSPIRATION ZERO!

Busy week,
As we speak,
But what to write,
As blank as night!

Inspiration's a funny thing,
Comes and goes on a wing.
Often there, sometimes not,
Have no outline of a plot.

Well David, why not try a rhyme?
In for a penny, in for a dime.
Something may come of it, you never know,
It's working, from a beginning so slow.

Whether or not this is inspiration, is for you to decide,
You may think it is, or very well my intelligence deride.
But the lines of verse are getting longer and longer and longer,
The hitting of keys, stronger and stronger, yes, even stronger!

So if you lack inspiration,
A rhyme brings impartation.
It may not make sense,
Rather be nonsense!
Bit it fills the page.
Likely a sign of age!
Another job done!
Wasn't that fun!

(NO..... IT WASN'T! .....Well, at least I tried! .....Christmas madness, perhaps?)

A DAVID MUSING

This week has seen a momentous event in my life! For my Auntie Barbara, the last remaining blood relative of my older generation, has died. Now I, and those of my generation, are it! We truly are THE OLDS! (Although my kids have said that for a long time! LOL!)

The passing of the generations is as certain as night follows day. We can't stop it! We need to rest in it!

Reminds one of those interminable genealogies in the Bible that were, and remain, so important to the Jewish people. Although personally, I am not particularly interested in my ancestry, as many are, I do now, in my dotage, appreciate more the essence of history and influence and sacrifices our forbears made to get us to the place we are now.

People of my post World war 2 generation have not had the hardships, nor generally have had to make the sacrifices our forbears did, to give us the amazing world we have today. If only we could thank them personally!

Of course our spiritual forbear, and still ever present brother Jesus, is the one I can still thank, and continually do! Thank you Jesus for all you have done for me - and for all those throughout the generations, who have followed you.

PS: Just noticed that this is Issue 800 - without missing one! Thank you Lord for the good health you have given me over the years.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

ABOUT US

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God's people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ's return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord's direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "... so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole - and have a smile while doing it!
