CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?

The Reformation was not a single event, but a culmination of a new age of the bible being translated into languages that the ordinary people could understand. eg. John Wycliffe's translation into English in the 14th century. This, combined with the invention of the printing press John Gutenberg in the 15th century, enabled a readable bible to be distributed amongst the people, in turn leading to the Reformation of the 16th century, credited to Martin Luther, but influenced by many others as well.

The 'reformers', from Luther to Wesley, and many others, endeavored to 'reform' the church, but were forced to leave by established church leaders of the churches they belonged to. Hence new movements were set up, leading eventually to the 40,000 odd denominations we have today.

Sadly though, although many started with Holy Spirit leading and inspiration, when the movement grew or the founders died, church structures, effectively little different to the Roman Catholic Church in principle, while using different names. So in the Traditional churches we had bishops, Reverends, ministers and deacons, to today's Pentecostal type churches where we still have bishops and pastors, along with Apostles and Elders.Still have a clergy-laity divide.

In reality, the Reformation failed in terms of building a church along early New Testament principles. We still have a focus on buildings. It is estimated that the value of church buildings in America alone is $US232 billion. That is $232,000,000,000! Add the rest of the world.....

Buildings are designed to bring people in to. To hear paid clergy, who dominate the church in a similar way to the church before the Reformation, necessarily controlling the members in order to bring in the money to keep the monolith operational. So, instead of looking for new converts, most churches endeavor to attract people from other churches. 'Bums on seats' is the focus.

It has been estimated (http://www.95theses2000.org/churchbldgmoney.htm) that if all US church property was sold and the amount invested, the interest alone would do ALL of the following EVERY year.....

1. Support translators to translate the Bible into the three thousand languages and dialects presently without a Bible translation ($135 million)

2. Feed five million starving or malnourished people every day ($1.82 billion)

3. Start and fund seventy-five Christian colleges and theology schools in eastern Europe and Russia ($375 million)

4. Support three hundred Christian candidates running for office in the Senate and House of Representatives who would work for consistent pro-life ethic policies ($150 million)

5. Send one hundred thousand “tent-maker” missionaries to China to teach English and spread the gospel to their Communist students ($250 million)

6. Send six hundred thousand underprivileged children to Christian summer camp ($180 million)

7. Finance new water and sewer systems in one hundred thousand Third World villages, eliminating the cause of many deadly diseases ($100 million)

8. Finance fifteen hundred counseling centers to provide low-cost Christian counseling for families and individuals in trouble ($600 million)

9. Print and ship to Hong Kong one small library of basic Christian books for each of the forty thousand underground house churches in China, to be smuggled in by “tent-making” missionaries over time ($15 million)

10. Fund a Christian environmentalist political lobby to work for the proper care of God’s natural creation in government policy ($80 million)

11. Supplement the incomes of five thousand needy retired ministers ($50 million)

12. Build, staff, and supply fifty thousand Christian elementary schools in Africa, Asia, and Latin America ($700 million)

13. Supplement the incomes of one quarter of the 5.2 million handicapped and elderly Americans who live below the poverty line to raise them out of poverty ($4 billion)

14. Support seventy thousand church-planting missionaries to unreached peoples to plant and nourish indigenous churches, almost doubling the number of missionaries on the field today ($1.5 billion)

15. Offer $10,000 a year of child support assistance to every teenager who is considering having an abortion because of lack of financial support, assuming 25 percent accept it ($1.0875 billion)

16. Supplement basic medical supplies to eighty thousand Third World hospitals and clinics ($350 million)

17. Give financial aid to cut the tuition of eight thousand Christian college students in half ($56 million)

18. Finance ten thousand Christian leadership training centers in the Third World ($400 million)

19. Set up an interest-free, revolving loan fund to help one hundred thousand Christians every five years finance solar heating, insulation and/or weatherization for their homes ($800 million)

20. Support twenty thousand orphanages in Brazil, providing shelter and food for over one million children ($450 million)

21. Send ten thousand Third World Christian leaders to Bible college or seminary ($210 million)

22. Finance a Christian peace academy to research realistic ways to reduce international military conflicts and the threat of nuclear and chemical war ($800 million)

23. Support ten thousand inner city evangelistic and social action ministries ($290 million)

24. Finance theological and pastoral training for eight hundred thousand nonprofessional church leaders ($1.3 billion)

25. Provide food, clothing, and basic housing for two-thirds of all homeless Americans today ($5 billion)

26. Financially help churches in transition from meeting in church buildings to homes and public halls ($267 million)

Again, add in the rest of the world and we could double this at least!

While we may not agree with all these items, the point is strongly made, don't you think?

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

The Lamp of Your Body (Luke 11:33-6)

No one lights a lamp and then hides it or places it under a bowl. No, you put it on a lamp stand so that those who come into the house can see the light. Your eye is the light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body is in the dark. So make sure the light you have in you is not actually darkness. If your whole body is full of light, with no areas of darkness, then it will be completely illuminated, just as a bright lamp gives you light.”

Six Woes Declared on the Pharisees and Lawyers (Luke 11:37-54)
When Jesus joined them for lunch without ceremoniously washing His hands.

“You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you’re full of greed and wickedness. You’re so foolish! Don’t you think the One who made the outside made the inside as well? If, acting from within, you do acts of kindness to others, then everything will be clean to you. Shame on you Pharisees! You pay tithe on herbs and plants, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You need to pay attention to the latter, while not leaving the former things undone. Shame on you Pharisees! You love to have the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect when you go to the markets. Shame on you! You are like unmarked graves that people walk over without knowing.”
“Shame on you lawyers too! You place burdens on people that are too hard to carry, but you don’t lift a finger to help them. Shame on you! You build memorial tombs to honor the prophets, but it was your own fathers who killed them in the first place! By doing this you are witnesses showing that you agree with what your fathers did. They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs!
“This is why God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will kill, and others they will persecute.’ Consequently, this generation will be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets shed from the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel right up to the blood of Zachariah who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable for all of it. Shame on you lawyers! You have removed the key of knowledge. You didn’t go in yourselves, and you prevented others from going in too.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

DISCIPLESHIP

214.-235. Discipleship is...

... doing the right thing because we want to, not because we are expected to.

... being a servant both to God and man.

... honouring God with body, soul and spirit.

... loving the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind.

... being 100% committed to the Lord's cause.

... putting the Lord first in all things.

... placing the Lord's desires ahead of our own.

... applying the Lord's will to our mind and emotions.

... accepting the Lord's correction graciously.

... being joyful in the Lord - even while being corrected!

... subverting our will to His.

... centred upon giving rather than receiving.

... becoming a little more like Jesus every day.

... being prepared to die for our Lord.

... honouring and worshipping God as Lord, rather than a 'holy Father Christmas.'

... being the one God would like us to be.

... placing God's needs and others godly needs ahead of our own.

... helping others attain to their ministries, even to the expense of our own.

... being Jesus to others.

... retaining the joy of the Lord in times of personal sadness.

... putting wrongs right - graciously!

... walking as one with the Lord, night and day.

878. 'A disciple' has no need of 'a title'.

879. A disciple turns words into actions.

880. Believers believe, while disciples live what they believe.

1315. A disciple 'walks the walk', not just 'talks the talk'.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

240. PREACHER AND THE CHOIR DIRECTOR
Church feuds are not uncommon, especially among cliques in the congregation. But when the Pastor and choir director get into it, stand aside.

One week our preacher preached on commitment, and how we should dedicate ourselves to service. The director then led the choir in singing, 'I Shall Not Be Moved.'

The next Sunday, the preacher preached on giving and how we should gladly give to the work of the Lord. The choir director then led the song, 'Jesus Paid It All.'

The next Sunday, the preacher preached on gossiping and how we should watch our tongues. The hymn was 'I Love To Tell The Story.'

The preacher became disgusted over the situation, and the next Sunday he told the congregation he was considering resigning. The choir then sang 'Oh, Why Not Tonight.'

When the preacher resigned the next week, he told the church that Jesus had led him there and Jesus was taking him away. The choir then sang, 'What A Friend We Have in Jesus.'

239. YOU MIGHT BE A PROTESTANT!
1. If you believe you are supposed to take a covered dish to heaven.
2. If you have never sung the third verse of any hymn.
3. If you have ever put an IOU in the collection plate.
4. If you complain because your Pastor only works one day a week and then he works too long.
5. If you think God's presence is always strongest in the back three pews.
6. If you think "Victory in Jesus" is the national anthem.
7. If the first complete sentence you uttered was "We've never done it this way before."
8. If you judge the quality of the sermon by the amount of sweat worked up by the preacher.
9. If your definition of "fellowship" has something to do with food.
10. If you think worship service music has to be loud.
11. If you think Jesus actually used Welch's grape juice and unsalted crackers.
12. If you think preachers who wear robes are in cahoots with the Catholics.

238. FAITH
The fields were parched and brown from lack of rain, and the crops lay wilting from thirst. People were anxious and irritable as they searched the sky for any sign of relief. Days turned into arid weeks. No rain came.

The ministers of the local churches called for an hour of prayer on the town square the following Saturday. They requested that everyone bring an object of faith for inspiration.

At high noon on the appointed Saturday the townspeople turned out en masse, filling the square with anxious faces and hopeful hearts. The ministers were touched to see the variety of objects clutched in prayerful hands - holy books, crosses, rosaries.
When the hour ended, as if on magical command, a soft rain began to fall. Cheers swept the crowd as they held their treasured objects high in gratitude and praise.

From the middle of the crowd one faith symbol seemed to overshadow all the others: A small nine-year-old child had brought an umbrella.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: How many sweat glands do we have in our body?

ANSWER: About five million. Most are in the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, and your armpits. (Work up a sweat thinking about it!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What percentage of a watermelon is water?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

487. NOT MUCH FUN LEFT!
In London, England, it is illegal to drive a car without sitting in the front seat. (How is it that ‘back seat drivers’ usually sit in the front seat?)

488. DANGEROUS RIDING
If going on safari on horseback in Zimbabwe's outback savannah, it is recommended by safari guides that travellers not touch any of the trees, as they may be poisonous. (A tree-mendous problem.)

489. FLOWER POWER
The biggest and best funeral for a gangster ever held in Chicago was for a flower shop entrepreneur named O'Banion. The shop, at the corner of State and Superior Streets, was a front for O'Banion's bootlegging and hijacking operations. Ten thousand mourners attended, with the most expensive wreath — costing $1,000 — coming from Al Capone, who had ordered that O'Banion be rubbed out. (Good g-wreath!)

AN AFRICAN EXPERIENCE

From Uganda I traveled by bus, with my friend Naphtali, to Kisumu in Kenya. My trip to Africa. My true African adventure was beginning!

After an 8 hour bus ride we arrived in Kisumu. Our contact was not there to pick us up. Oops! I tried to ring him but my Ugandan sim card, which I had been assured would work in Kenya, didn't! Fortunately, Naphtali was on a different network, and his did. Half an hour later our new friend Josiah turned up and we were on the way.

The 2 days of meetings in Kisumu were the smallest I have ever had! The problem you face is that if you don't pour money into large scale advertising, hiring a well known gospel singer for the worship, hire a large hall and provide lots of food, pastors and leaders think you can't be worth listening to. For credibility there and everywhere is based upon very human values. I failed, once again, to live up to their expectations of the white man!

However, the few that did come were so convicted by the Word and the Spirit that they have undertaken to spread the message throughout the area, Jesus taught but 11 disciples......

I bought another sim card on a different network, so was able to again communicate with the world.

An interesting African experience.

LIFE'S A LAUGH

184. POKER FACED
Wherever we take our twin daughters, strangers always come up to us and say, "Look, twins!"

During a Las Vegas trip, though, we were wheeling them in their stroller through a hotel lobby when a woman came around a corner and exclaimed, "Look, a pair!"

185. FLYING LESSONS
Early in my flying career, I had my first night flight. Looking down into the darkness, I asked my instructor what we would do if the engine failed.

"Get the plane gliding in a controlled descent," he said, "then attempt to restart the engine and make a 'Mayday' call. The only difference between day and night flying is that the terrain below will not be clearly visible, so you should point the aircraft toward whatever looks like a clear area and it should be pointing into the wind."

"Then what?" I asked.

"Conserve your battery, so don't turn on your landing lights until you're close to the ground. If you like what you see, land."

"Okay, but what if I don't like what I see?"

My instructor gave me a compassionate look inside that dim cockpit, then said softly, "Turn off the landing lights."

186. IT'S ALL THE SAME
When I went to get my driver's license renewed, our local motor-vehicle bureau was packed. The line inched along for almost an hour until the man ahead of me finally got his license. He inspected his photo for a moment and commented to the clerk, "I was standing in line so long, I ended up looking pretty grouchy in this picture."

The woman beside him peered over his shoulder, then reassured him, "It's okay. That's how you're going to look when the cops pull you over anyway."

187. DELIVERIES?
When I was a mother's helper, the mom of the family I worked for sat with her three oldest children and watched a PBS special showing the birth of a baby. The mom thought it would be a good starting point for answering questions about the facts of life.

As her five-year-old studied the baby coming out of the birth canal, he asked, "Mom, does that hurt?"

"Oh, yes, it does," she said, remembering her difficult deliveries.

"Gee," he continued in awe, "does it hurt the mother too?"

188. THE ORDER
My husband and I both work, so our family eats out a lot. Recently, when we were having a rare home-cooked meal, I handed a glass to my three year old and asked her to please
drink her milk.

She looked at me bewildered, "But I didn't order milk."

Pastor Pays Price to See Germany's Spiritual Revival

BREMEN, Germany -- Germany was the birthplace of the Reformation and was once a base for world missions. But much of Germany today is covered by a profound spiritual darkness, as are most Western nations.
Those who refuse to compromise on the teaching of scripture pay a price.

Bremen Pastor Olaf Latzel knows full well that there is a cost for speaking out boldly -- especially in today's Germany, where traditional Christian teaching is viewed by many as bigoted, hateful, and even "un-Christian."

Latzel has been attacked in the media, investigated by the local government, and even denounced by fellow pastors. His crime? Refusing to bend a knee to political correctness.

No Compromise

"I'm only preaching the Gospel in a clear way," Latzel said. "I think it is my duty to do this preaching in this way for our Lord."

In his sermons, Latzel cuts no corners. He soft-pedals nothing. To some, he might sound mean when he attacks other religions.

But Latzel is standing against what he sees as a spirit of compromise that seems to have swallowed Germany and the German state church.

In the process, he has angered the German establishment and even a lot of German pastors.

Latzel said the chief battle in the German church today now is over who God is.

According to Latzel, some Christian pastors have said "Allah and Jesus Christ, the Christian God, is the same god."

"But if you ask a Muslim, 'Does your god have a son?' he would say no!" he continued. "Our (Christian) God has a son; his name is Jesus Christ. So, they are not the same."

"If you speak out loud and clearly about the truth of the Bible, that there's only one way to heaven and this way is Jesus Christ, there is only one God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and there is no other god beside Him, then you have a problem," he said.

Unsaved Pastors?

Seventy German pastors gathered in Bremen this year to denounce Latzel behind a banner celebrating "diversity."

The public prosecutor investigated him for hate speech and then cleared him, and the Bremen parliament passed a resolution against him.

It was reportedly the first time a German pastor has been condemned by a German parliament since World War II.

But far from backing down, Latzel said the real problem is that, in his estimation, most pastors in Germany's state church have not been born again.

"I think over 80 percent of the pastors in the national church in Germany are not reborn," he said. "And that's a great problem, and because of this, they make their own doctrine. The Bible is the Word of God; it's our law, chapter by chapter, book by book, sentence by sentence, letter by letter."

Latzel pastors at the historic St. Martini (St. Martin's) Church in Bremen, where around 1679 the church's pastor, Joachim Neander, wrote the great hymn, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty."

Latzel enjoys saying that Pastor Neander also got in trouble for preaching the Gospel boldly.

Some pastors would have been rattled by so many attacks against them. But Latzel, who comes from a family with a long military tradition, said he is in a "war" between Christ and the devil, and the attacks reassure him.

"This is one sign that you are on the right way in your preaching, when you get problems," Latzel said. "If you preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and everyone is clapping his hand, then you have a problem."

"Because, if you're telling the truth from the Bible, then the devil will come and he will fight against you in several ways; he will fight against the Word of God," he said.

A Tool in God's Hand

In fact, Latzel admits his concern is not becoming discouraged but getting a big head.

"I (have received) more than 10,000 emails…so many persons came to me and said, 'You are a great pastor,'" Latzell said. "And the more persons came and told me this, something happened inside me and, 'Oh, I'm really this great pastor.'"

"And the devil comes here and says, 'Yes, yes. You are great,' and that's not good," he continued. "I am nothing. I am only a sinner. I am only a tool for Jesus Christ. And when Jesus can use this tool, give any honor to Jesus Christ. I am nothing."

The great hymn of St Martin's Church says, "Let the amen come from his people again." Latzel believes revival is coming to Germany and he asks Christians to pray for his country.

"I ask you, brothers and sisters in America, please pray for Germany. Pray for awakening," he pleaded. "Pray that the Word of Jesus Christ will go out and reach persons who are lost so that Jesus can save them."

WAXING LYRICAL

Don't know how this came into my mind! But it did! maybe feeling guilty! Hope it helps.

TO GO OR TO STAY?

There's a time to come and a time to go,
Which is which we never seem to know.
Not to outstay our welcome here,
Nor to be a nuisance there,
Give me wisdom Lord,
To be in Your accord.

Have no idea why I am writing this!
But trust the point I do not miss!
For we all have times when we should know to go,
But hang on we do, outstaying our welcome, saying yes when we should say no......

Just leave!
Don't grieve!
It's not the day,
For me to stay.

This simple lesson we must learn,
Many 'brownie points' then to earn.
Our welcome not overstaying,
And our hosts not dismaying.
Then they will be happy to have us return,
For us, the 'welcome mat', we will not burn.

This piece of sage advice
May keep us very nice,
In the eyes of others,
If not our mothers.

Reminds me now, her to visit,
Yes, for more than a minute!
For she brought me up, indeed she did,
Even at times, when I was a bad kid.
For mothers are more patient than most,
My responsibility to her, now foremost.

So I will visit her this afternoon,
Hope she will be over the moon.
Take her out in the car for a nice drive,
In the sunshine - so good to be alive!

To go or to stay?
Surely wisdom is needed.
For that I pray,
His advice to be heeded.

A DAVID MUSING

Two very close games of rugby this week. Our local provincial rugby team won the 2nd division championship, leading for the first time in the match with only 2 minutes to go. It was as a result of Kathy and my cheering from the side line, we are sure.

Then in London this very early morning (Sunday) New Zealand time (Saturday evening in Britain!), our national team the All Blacks, beat the South African Springboks, in another close game, in the first semi-final of the Rugby World Cup. We will meet either Australia or Argentina in the final next week.

Sorry about my mentioning rugby 2 weeks in a row, it is a big deal here in New Zealand.

Interestingly we are currently having some beautiful Holy Spirit meetings in our Tuesday group Sure there is no relation between the two! LOL!

I just look forward not only to the All Blacks winning the World Cup again, but much more, to the Holy Spirit moving in a greater way amongst many more people in our country.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
