TRANSFORMATION OF THE CHURCH: 4. CHARACTERISTICS OF KINGDOM PEOPLE
UNITY OF SPIRIT (Continued)Jesus was into spiritual unity. God's love and God's glory is reflected through unity.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. (John 17:20-24)
As mentioned last week, Jesus is coming back for one bride.
So how is this unity to come about?
It can only come through the Holy Spirit, whose role is to guide us into the truth.
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. (John 16:13-14)
God's glory, God's unity, comes through the absolute, 100% submission of our lives to the Holy Spirit, no matter the cost. This is the objective, not yet fully achieved, of kingdom minded people.
Reality is, we don't fully listen to and apply what the Holy Spirit is saying. We filter everything through our humanness.
Yesterday I received prophecies from two respected American prophets. One said that Barak Obama would return America to its former glory while the other indicated he would lead it to its destruction. Well, only one can be right! It is likely both are wrong! It is no wonder that the world mocks such a divided church! A church with a little of God but more of self.
Actually, in the greater picture of the establishment of God's kingdom on earth, it matters not at all which, if either, of these is true. For the kingdom transcends national boundaries and is dependent upon obedience to God through the Holy Spirit, not wealth and power, for its establishment.
The role of the Spirit is confirmed by Paul.
9 However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love himâ€â€” The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. (1 Corinthians 2:9-12)
As Paul goes on to say, the world does not understand the things of the Spirit. I would suggest, that we in a divided church, only partially understand also.
Again, from the first Scripture quoted above, we have yet to reach the spiritual condition prayed for by Jesus for us. It was a future promise.
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (John 17:22-3)
Such is the way of the kingdom.

FROM THE WORD
Jesus Prays for All Believers"“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.â€" (John 17:20-26)
The Work of the Holy Spirit
"“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.â€' (John 16:5-16)
Wisdom From the Spirit
"We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love himâ€â€” but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?†But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:6-16)

JESUS CALMS THE STORM
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.†So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!†He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?†he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.†(Luke 8:22-25)

COMMENT FROM LAST WEEK"S ANSWERDear David
Of course the moon isn't made of cheese. Re Genesis 1. God made the moon on
Day 4 and cattle on Day 6. Therefore He made the moon two days before He
made cheese. ( Cows, milk, cheese )

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Sharks and Rays are the only animals known
to man that cannot get this disease. What is it?
ANSWER: Cancer. Scientists believe this is related to the fact that they
have no bone, only cartilage. (How about boneless humans? Are we part
way there with spineless ones?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: King Edward II of England (1324) decreed the
standard measurement of the ‘inch’ to be equal to what?
Answer Next Week.
459. THEN…
Florence in Italy, was the first city to mint its own gold coins in 1252. The ‘fiorino’ became known as the ‘florence’, then finally as the ‘florin’. (Since then we have all been trying to ‘make a mint’!)
460. AND NOW…
According to U.S. Treasury, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, there were more than 10 billion pennies minted in the United States in 1998. The actual number of coins produced, by denomination, was pennies, 10,257,400,000; nickels, 1,323,672,000; dimes, 2,335,300,000; quarters, 1,867,400,000; and half-dollars, 30,710,000. (More money, but seemingly, always more to spread it amongst.)
461. HOW LONG?
Early systems of measurement used body parts to calculate length. A cubit ran from elbow to middle fingertip. The distance from fingertip to fingertip of outstretched arms was a fathom. (Used a small or tall person, depending on the length that best suited your requirements!)
A WORD PUZZLE FOR YOU

BIBLE TRIVIA
HABIRU (or Hebrew)........was a word of disparagement, probably meaning 'the dusty ones'. It referred to all the land-hungry Semites or nomads. However, once Abram was called 'the Hebrew' (Genesis 14:13), this previously general name was applied to His descendants only.

Africa sends out missionaries by the thousands.
An Ethiopian tells that when he landed on Indian soil as a missionary in 1998 it surprised him as much as anyone else. "Could this be possible?" he asked himself. "We always thought only white people could be missionaries." More than a step of faith, this venture created a worldview change for him. After all, he had gone out from Africa, the continent that for generations has been known as the mission field, the place where missionaries go.But God had prepared the way. Soon after arriving, one of his team members shared the gospel with a woman. She stopped him. "I had a dream last week," she said. "Fire was consuming the village and people were running. Two people were praying with arms outstretched. Then something like a cross came between the fire and the village." She concluded, "You were the people." In the following three months 1,357 people gave their lives to Christ. After their initial success, the home church in Ethiopia sent 20 more missionaries to India and Pakistan.
In the same way, thousands of Africans from across the continent are defying old stereotypes and embarking on the cross-cultural missionary adventure. In some areas, the church has been doing it for awhile; in other places it's just getting started. In Nigeria, missions have been gaining momentum since the mid-70s. NEMA, the Nigerian Evangelical Mission Agency, now has 5,200 missionaries serving in Africa and around the world. A church in one of South Africa's townships has been sending out short-term missionaries for seven years, according to a report at a recent MANI SA conference. Just two years ago they sent their first long-termers. Church members are enthusiastic about their missionaries who are working in three other countries, and are committed to support them.
Africans are still mindful of what foreign missionaries have done in their continent. "We appreciate you, and what the Lord has done through you for us," said Nigerian Dr. Rev. Nicholas Asamayan, who mobilizes black churches for missions. "And to those who died, thank you for your sacrifice and your love. But in God's prophetic timetable, the time has come for us," he said. He explained that it is time for an Afro-centric approach to missions, for defining mission in the African context, for writing materials and coming up with creative ideas.
"They are moving into the earth's difficult unreached communities. Professionals back home, such as engineers and doctors, raise money to support them."
God's new company of African missionaries is moving into some of earth's difficult unreached communities.
"In Ethiopia over 3,000 missionaries have moved from one culture to the other to share Jesus Christ."
"The gospel has been in Ethiopia for 1,670 years," said Pastor Langana at MANI SA '08, "first brought here by the eunuch in Acts 8. "But I'm sorry to say that, even though we were a Christian nation, we never reached the rest of Africa." Things changed in 1990. "God brought a missionary," said Langana, "and used him as a key person. He told us, 'It is time for Ethiopia to see the people who are unreached." We had never been thinking of going outside Ethiopia. Now, over 3,000 missionaries in the North African country of Ethiopia have moved from one culture to another in order to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The missions-minded country of Ghana, which has sent people to such far-reaching places as China, Ukraine, Brazil and India, was inspired by the Nigerian missions movement, and continues to be motivated by the Acts 1:8 strategy. It's simple. Every church has four realms to influence: 'Jerusalem', your own home town, 'Judea', the next closest region, 'Samaria', even farther out, and then 'the ends of the earth'.

A REVELATION OF... THE POWER OF THREE IN GOD AND THE CHURCHIn walking further with Jesus, I increasingly appreciate that this particular revelation of 'threes in God' has been hugely important in developing my understanding of God and how He works both in the church and in our lives.
It matters not whether you are a 'oneness', 'twoness', or 'trinitarian' believer. The concept still applies. For we're all very good at putting God in a box, limited to the walls of our theology and understanding. But, one day, we will know all the truth of the great mystery of God.
In the meantime, if you can grasp this simple, yet profound concept, I'm sure it will open up new realms of understanding for you too about God and His plans for His people in these end days.
It certainly developed my faith tremendously, being able to grasp more of God's mighty plan for me. And for you too!

WAXING LYRICAL
Faith is to be a living, growing, dynamic feature of our walk with our God.FAITH
I wonder why, when 'faith' is an issue,
So often then, we reach for a tissue,
To mop up the tears of doubt you see,
That assail us now, both you and me.
For on the one hand, we trust God with our all,
On the other, human doubt, our faith does stall!
"Will He or wont He?" we are wont to think,
Our faith, once so strong, begins to sink.
"You've always proved faithful to me, my Lord,"
While former blessings, I wish I could hoard!
Each new level requiring greater trust in Him,
Memories of past successes faded, now so dim.
If today's faith was the same as in the past,
Our belief in Him, just simply wouldn't last.
It would just be our own strength that had won,
Not that of our Lord, Jesus Christ the Son.
Now, today's challenge is to break new ground,
Then our faith in Him, it will be truly found.
Oh Lord, please help me in my unbelief!
You've come through again - what a relief!
Put simply, it's the way God's faith works,
Though to our human spirit, it still irks!
So if now, we are to mature and grow,
Trusting Him's, the only way to go!

A DAVID MUSING
It is a hot Sunday afternoon (Summer has come early) as I write this, and I am falling asleep over the computer! Why?
Well, last night I was up late watching a sporting miracle on the TV, the New Zealand Rugby League team finally doing the impossible, beating Australia to win the World Cup at the 13th time of trying over 54 years.
Then, early this morning, I listened to our All Black machine, as expected, beat Wales in our national game of Rugby Union.
Both victories were good, but the World Cup crown the more satisfying because it saw the ultimate in faith from the team's battered but loyal supporters over a half century timeframe fulfilled.
Walking with Jesus too, is much like this. Easy faith is easy. All to often we simply know and expect Jesus to help us in the little things of our daily lives. Just as we expect the All Blacks to win and grizzle a lot on the odd occasion they don't, so we don't really appreciate what Jesus does for us from day to day.
But Jesus is calling us to bigger things. The faith to move mountains! To miracles! To unity! To holiness! To persevere in order to do the impossible, as the NZ League team has just done.
Personally, I don't think that, other than in very occasional, exceptional circumstances, Jesus cares who wins a sporting competition. But in the spiritual, He is calling us to greater faith, so that the strongholds of the devil can be overcome.
Do you want to be on the winning team? It will cost you everything, but the rewards are out of this world!
I will sleep well tonight!
Until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait

(John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
