THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues
We are looking at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See the last 21 weeks issues of PGIM!)We have looked at some of these principles previously, but this summary will hopefully both increase our knowledge and encourage us put our knowledge into practice!
KNOWING v DOING
Greek (Western) The Greek way of thinking is knowledge based, dependant upon the development of logical thought.
In Christian circles too, it is often more important to believe and speak out "the right thing," rather than to live the right way. We are obsessed with creeds, doctrinal statements, Systematic Theologies, orthodoxy vs. heresy, and creating "Evangelical" or "Sabbatarian" or "Trinitarian" theologies.
Prophecy is seen as occurring on a time-line. We need to tick off prophetic events as they happen, in a logical order.
We also are inclined to abandon literal translation of the Scriptures in favour of allegorical explanations.
Eastern (Hebrew) Hebrews are concerned with actions, about living a righteous life.
They look to the moral, rather than the intellectual.
They also look to the 'day of the Lord', knowing that He will act in His time, rather than to a specific prophetic timetable.
A COMPARISON BETWEEN HEBRAIC AND WESTERN THINKING
This table, taken from www.godward.org sums up the differences between the two cultures.
WESTERN APPROACH
HEBRAIC APPROACH
1. Life analyzed in precise categories.
....Everything blurs into everything else.
2. A split between natural & supernatural
....Supernatural affects everything.
3. Linear logic
....Contextual or "block" logic
4. "Rugged Individualism"
....Importance of being part of group
5. Equality of persons
....Value comes from place in hierarchies
5. Freedom orientation
....Security orientation
6. Competition is good
....Competition is evil (cooperation better)
7. Man-centered universe
....God/tribe/family-centered universe
8. Worth of person based on money/material possessions/power
....Worth derived from family relationships
9. Biological life sacred
....Social life supremely important
10. Chance + cause & effect limit what can happen
....God causes everything in his universe
11. Man rules nature through understanding and applying laws of science
....God rules everything, so relationship with God determines how things turn out.
12. Power over others achieved through business, politics and human organizations.
....Power over others is structured by social patterns ordained by God.
13. All that exists is the material
....The universe is filled with powerful spirit beings
14. Linear time divided into neat segments. Each event is new.
....Cyclical or spiraling time. Similar events constantly reoccur.
15. History is recording facts objectively and chronologically.
....History is an attempt to preserve significant truths in meaningful or memorable ways whether or not details are objective facts.
16. Oriented to the near future
....Oriented to lessons of history
17. Change is good = progress
....Change is bad = destruction of traditions
18. Universe evolved by chance
....Universe created by God
19. Universe dominated and controlled by science and technology
....God gave man stewardship over his earthly creation. Accountability to God.
20. Material goods = measure of personal achievement
....Material goods = measure of God’s blessing
21. Blind faith
....Knowledge-based faith
22.Time as points on straight line ("at this point in time…"
....Time determined by content ("In the day that the Lord did…")
(To be continued next week.)

FROM THE WORD
Seven Woes"Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. “Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’â€" (Matthew 23:1-39)
Clean and Unclean
"Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!†Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ he is not to ‘honor his father’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: â€â€˜These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.’†Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’†Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?†He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.†Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.†“Are you still so dull?†Jesus asked them. “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’â€" (Matthew 15:1-20)
Instructions to Timothy
"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe." (1 Timothy 4:1-10)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
SUBMISSION AND OBEDIENCE927. If we obey those we respect, it begs the question, "Do we respect ourselves more than Jesus?"
928. If God knows more than me, shouldn't I take His advice?
929. As God grows in me, there is less and less room for me myself!
930. Heaven is reached through obedience to God's will, not simply the recitation of a 'Sinners Prayer'.
931. Godly obedience is the present outworking of belief and faith.
932. I cannot truly say I'm a believer if I'm not prepared to follow the path of the one in whom I believe.
933. Freewill is a choice, obedience the choice of freewill.
934. Doing what God wants us to do when it differs from what we want to do is our true test of obedience.
935. "I will obey You", is the ultimate form of worship.
936. The path of obedience takes a different route to that of our natural understanding.
937. To do what we don't understand, because God said it, is the ultimate test of obedience.
938. It may be easier to die as a martyr, than to die to one's self!
939. As I die, so God grows in me. There is only room for one of us!
940. In God, submission is a sign of success, not one of failure.

501. SWIM?
A learned Rabbi took a philosophy professor (an atheist at that) out fishing on a large lake. As they drifted on the still lake, the philosopher accidentally dropped an oar and watched it float away. The Rabbi stepped out of the boat, walked across the water to the oar, grabbed it and walked back to the boat.
The next day at the university, a colleague asked the philosopher if he had enjoyed fishing with the Rabbi. "It was okay, but would you believe that guy can't swim?"

1006. A MAORI MOUTHFUL
One of the many hills in the North Island of New Zealand is named "TAUMATAWHAKATANGIHANGAKOAUAUOTAMATEATURIPUKAKAPIKLIMANGAHORONUKUPOKAIWH ENU AKITANATAHU." (Don’t worry, not many Maoris – the native people of NZ – can spell it either. I know – I live there and have asked!)
1007. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
The giraffe has unusually high blood pressure. Its heart uses tremendous force to pump blood through its neck, which is about 10-12 feet long. A giraffe heart weighs about 25 pounds (11 kilos) and has walls up to three inches thick! (Does it also suffer from ‘tall poppy’ syndrome?)

GREAT GROANERS
79. THE PUNISHMENTA sailor was caught AWOL as he tried to sneak on board his ship at about 3 am.
The chief petty officer spied him and ordered the sailor to stop. Upon hearing the sailor's lame explanation for his tardiness, the officer ordered the sailor, "Take this broom and sweep every link on this anchor chain by morning or it's the brig for you!"
The sailor began to pick up the broom and commence performing his charge. As he began to sweep, a tern landed on the broom handle. The sailor yelled at the bird to leave, but it didn't. The lad picked the tern off the broom handle, giving the bird a toss. The bird left, only to return and light once again on the broom handle. The sailor went through the same routine all over again, with the same result. He couldn't get any cleaning done because he can only sweep at the chain once or twice before the blasted bird returns.
When morning came, so did the chief petty officer, to check up on his wayward sailor.
"What in the heck have you been doing all night? This chain is no cleaner than when you started! What have you to say for yourself, sailor?" barked the chief.
"Honest, chief," came the reply, "I tossed a tern all night and couldn't sweep a link!"
80. THE SOUP
Checking the menu, a restaurant customer ordered a bowl of vegetable soup. After a couple of spoonfuls, he saw a circle of wetness right under the bowl on the tablecloth.
He called the waitress over and said,
"It's all wet down here. The bowl must be cracked."
The waitress said, "You ordered vegetable soup, didn't you?"
"Yes."
"Maybe it has a leek in it!"
81. THE FLY AND THE COW
A farmer was milking a cow and a fly was flying around. He shushed it away with his hand and it flew in the cow's ear.
He kept milking and the fly came out in the milk bucket.
The farmer thought to himself, "In one ear and out the udder".

BIBLE TRIVIA (Music in the Bible)
THE FLUTE.......... is only mentioned once in the KJV, in Daniel 3:5. It is mentioned more in more modern translations. eg. NIV 3 times. It may have well referred to a reed flute or some other instrument that resembles a modern flute.

Olympics provide Baptists unique ministry opportunity
08 Jun 2012Baptist Press
LONDON - At times, when Doug Shaw stands on the hill just outside Olympic Park in London, he can barely hear himself think.
Construction buzzes and roars in preparation for the Summer Olympic Games, which start July 27. The work's been going strong for years.
Shaw can relate. He hasn't stopped in ages either.
As Olympics volunteer coordinator for Southern Baptists, he's been in motion for months preparing Baptists to meet the tens of thousands of internationals coming to the United Kingdom this summer.
"We are praying that many people from all over the world who may not have an opportunity to hear or respond to the Gospel without being persecuted by their neighbors might have that opportunity while they're here in London," Shaw said.
David Pile said he has the same hope.
"I and others are hopeful that there will be lots of local events and lots of community engagement and we'll be able to share and shine the love of Jesus with a bunch of people that we otherwise wouldn't have come in contact with," said Pile, Olympic and Paralympic Church Engagement Coordinator for the London Baptist Association.
Shaw is expecting the help of about 400 Baptist volunteers from the States, and Pile is expecting the participation of hundreds of churches in England.
Volunteers will help with festivals, face painting, handing out water and a range of other things. Some will assist churches in hosting big-screen events in parks, and sports teams will help with basketball and baseball events in neighborhoods around local churches.
All of these efforts fall under the banner of More Than Gold, a joint effort of Christian churches of many denominations worldwide. More Than Gold helps Christians collaborate for ministry during major international sporting events such as the Olympics or the World Cup.
And its most famous ministry - pin trading - will be in full force during the 2012 games.
"Pin trading is the biggest of the unofficial Olympic sports," Shaw said, noting that thousands participate in the hobby.
As part of More Than Gold, volunteers trade a More Than Gold pin that shares the Gospel message, he said......

WAXING LYRICAL
All too often we don't consider the long term consequences of our choices in life. Choices made now will affect us for eternity.WE CHOOSE
Life comes, life goes,
Brings peaks, and lows.
We surely reap what we sow!
Our tide does ebb and flow.
When I look back on what I've done,
I see the storms, but also the sun.
For I have done good, at times been bad,
Sometimes am happy, sometimes am sad.
No, the time past I cannot now change,
But my future, yes, I may rearrange.
What will I do? Where will I go?
I may think, but God does know.
Will I put my life in His hand?
On His Rock, my days to stand.
Or will I build my house on the sand?
And His will for me, not understand.
Today I am charged to live the call.
Am I prepared to give Him my all?
Or will I continue in my earthly ways?
Seeking my own pleasure, all my days.
My time may well be short, it may be long,
Before joining Jesus, forever to belong,
What will He say that glorious day I see His face?
Knowing I've been saved, by His amazing grace.
Will it be, "Well done good and faithful servant",
Or will I seek my actions to quickly recant!
For on that day, I will surely see
The result of choices, made by me.
The past I can't change, the future neither,
But by my today's actions I can either
Build His kingdom here upon the earth,
Or make my own! My decision, my worth.
What will I do? Where will I go?
Will it be wheat or tares I sow?
Today I now have the choices to make,
Of what direction my life will take.
You too, my friend, today are in the very same boat,
To be a sheep of the Shepherd, or to be the goat.
What will be your choice of 'the way' to live?
All your life to Jesus, will you now give?
One day we will meet together with Jesus in heaven,
Having lived lives of fruitfulness, or of leaven.
The choices we now make on earth today,
Do determine what role we will play.
Let's now look towards
Our heavenly rewards.
The choice is mine,
The choice is thine!

A DAVID MUSING
Two weeks ago, we celebrated Kathy's mother's 90th birthday. A grand age to reach! A great time was had by all. Kathy wrote another of her special event family poems and cooked a huge, delicious birthday cake which she decorated with miniatures of the things that have been of significance in Mum's life. The cake must have been good, as it was virtually all eaten over the weekend! With the exception of our son Andrew's family, who live 20,000km away in Scotland, all the 4 generations of the family were present. The figurative 'icing on the cake' came on the Saturday evening when Mum's eldest son turned up from Perth in Western Australia, 8 hours flying time away from Palmerston North, here in New Zealand.
Traditional families are important, particularly so today, when their definition is being twisted into an 'anything goes' philosophy.
A godly society is based upon the foundation of Jesus and family, both natural and spiritual. May we make every effort to ensure that our families, both natural and spiritual, stay together.
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
