THE BURDEN OF POSSESSIONS
Here in New Zealand, it has been both the dream and most often the reality too, for people to own their own home. As security, a compulsory savings plan to repay the mortgage, and as an investment, home ownership is a notable feature of 'Kiwi' life. While, in many ways, this is an admirable aim, when God speaks, it can act as a real impediment to obeying His call - at least quickly.
Six weeks ago Kathy and I were called to shift cities. On Saturday we moved. This, in our terms, rapid reaction, was realistically only possible because we had lost our home in an unsuccessful business venture, 2 years ago. Incidentally, one that should have made us financially independent to be able to do God's work without being a burden on others! As we have started to learn, God's economy and ways are different to ours!
Yet, we still had a 'mountain' of possessions to shift. In spite of our best efforts to reduce the excess, we had to hire a large truck to carry our 'treasures' south. Yes, more like the Queen of Sheba visiting King Solomon than Jesus taking His simple message of salvation to the world.
You see, the Jews were looking for a kingly, successful and victorious Messiah to free them from Roman bondage. Yet Jesus did not go round His country on a 'white charger', followed by a entourage of camels carrying the essentials and little luxuries that would have made His life more comfortable. Maybe, we in the affluent West and others too, need to take more notice of His example, of His lifestyle. Wouldn't have worn out so many of our own, and our friends, muscles either!
But I have to admit though, I did enjoy driving the furniture truck! Haven't reached perfection just yet!

FROM THE WORD
Some wise words for people shifting house! And all of us!" "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21)
"Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” “Which ones?” the man inquired.
Jesus replied, ”‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:16-24)
DAVID'S DOODLINGS
%%% The foolish man listens to himself, a wise man listens to others, but a godly man submits to spiritual oversight.%%% The lips of a foolish man blaspheme God, those of a wise man honour God, but a godly man’s lips glorify his God.
%%% A foolish man can seek wisdom, the wise man godliness, while the godly man grows into the image of Christ.

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: From where does the saying "Hobson's Choice" originate?ANSWER: Hobson's Choice doesn't mean a difficult choice. It means no choice at all, rather like having to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. It originated from Thomas Hobson, a 16th-century stable-keeper, and a paid-up member of the amalgamated union of the bloody-minded. He only hired out his horses on a strict rotation system. Customers couldn't chose a horse. You got the one nearest the stable door or none!

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
