WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now proceed to the 20th century which, as we all know, was noted for outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Surely all would now be transformed by the Spirit and the bride church produced. Of course, we now know the reality, where there has been greater splits and divisions than ever before. God weeps!

20th CENTURY DEVELOPMENTS

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (Joel 2:28-9)

THE HEALING REVIVAL

SMITH WIGGLESORTH (1859-1947)

Todays writing has special significance to me. For my Great Aunty Ina, in whom I could see something 'different' than in others in my traditional Baptist Church background, received her Holy Spirit baptism at the Smith Wigglesworth meetings in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1922. It took me another 20-30 years to seek it for myself though!

Smith Wigglesworth was brought up in a poor, traditional church family and became a plumber. He learned to read after his marriage to Polly, a fiery preacher in the Salvation Army. For 20 years he sat beside her on the platform, without saying a word. Upon receiving the Holy Spirit, Polly got him to speak at her next meeting. The Holy Spirit's presence came powerfully and his world-wide faith healing ministry was launched. Polly died in 1913.

A report of his New Zealand meetings follows.....

EVANGELIST WIGGLESWORTH MINISTERS IN WELLINGTON

The opening services for the Evangelist's mission were conducted in the Vivian Street Baptist Sunday School Hall through the courtesy of its minister who previously had been an eyewitness at the Welsh revival. In these morning services the Evangelist delivered a series of addresses on “The Enduement of Power” and “The Gifts of the Spirit.” The numbers so increased that the services had to be transferred to the main church, but even this building became too small for the crowds that came. During these services the Evangelist was led to manifest the gifts of tongues and interpretation, creating faith in the congregation to believe God for an outpouring of His Spirit and that signs would follow the preaching of the Word. Miraculous touches of healing were definitely experienced in these meetings. One case was of a hopeless consumptive who was carried in a coma into the church but after prayer arose, full of vigour, and walked with head up around the church, healed.

On the Sunday morning the Evangelist ministered in the Berhampore Baptist Church and at the 11 a.m. service preached on the subject of “Faith.” In this meeting, to the consternation of some of the congregation, the gifts of tongues and interpretation were manifested. This was the only church service that the Evangelist ministered in outside the Mission.

For the evening services during the crusade the Town Hall (pictured) had been engaged.

The charismatic services in the Capital produced various reactions in some of the pulpits in the city. The Revd. F. de Lisle of the Constable Street Congregational Church preached on the subject “Is the day of Miracles Past?” The Revd. G. Glasson at the Terrace Congregational on “The Gifts of Healing;” the Revd. W. Day at the Kelburn Presbyterian on “Faith Healing :”the Revd. E. Drake of Trinity Methodist on “Healing in the Mission Field;” Mr. J. Moore, missioner at the Sailors' Friendly Society on “The Cures at the Town Hall;” the Revd. H. E. Edridge at the Island Bay Baptist on “Healing by Faith;” and the Revd. W. Rowlings of the Brooklyn Baptist on “Divine Healing.” A11 other ministers preaching in their pulpits during the mission decided to ignore the subject as far as their religious advertisements were concerned, and the situation became a little strained later at ministerial level when the Evangelist addressed the Wellington Council of Churches, in a meeting which was arranged to bring about a better understanding of Pentecostal theology and phenomenon. Regrettably, this meeting widened the gulf between the older churches and the new charismatic Christians, a situation which was to continue until the 1960's.

The first Sunday evening saw 800 present and the third evening saw 3000 present. From then on crowds were unable to gain admission each night. It was said that the singing was electrifying and was thought to surpass even the Torrey-Alexander and the Chapman-Alexander Revival services. In his preaching the Evangelist emphasised the key words, “Only believe,” and his ministry covered such subjects as “The Baptism of the Holy Ghost,” “The Sanctification of the Believer,” the “Second Coming of Christ,” “Divine Healing for the sick,” and “Exorcism from evil spirits.” The whole Gospel for the whole man was preached fully in the demonstration and power of the Holy Spirit, with very many conversions to Christ taking place and backsliders being restored. The services received, on the whole, fair treatment from the Press, and Wellingtonians were no doubt startled when reading their morning paper to see the bold caption, “FAITH HEALING, EXTRAORDINARY SCENES AT TOWN HALL; THE DEAF MADE TO HEAR.” A vivid description of the services then followed.

One evening, almost a thousand could not gain admission and a Salvation Army officer who had come from Brisbane to be present at the services, stood on the Town Hall steps and preached the gospel to those outside. This preaching yielded at least 20 decisions for Christ with some remarkable healings taking place as well. Inside the Town Hall there were scenes taking place that many Christians had prayed for and waited patiently to see. Not only hundreds of sinners accepting Christ as Saviour and Lord, but the sick were being healed in mind and body and Christians were being baptised in the Holy Spirit. For them, Bible days were here again and the influence of the revival was making its presence felt in many quarters of the city.

Seeking to carefully and objectively assess the first series of the Wigglesworth services in Wellington, Mr. E. E. Pennington, later to become chairman of the New Zealand Evangelical Mission said, “Evangelist Wigglesworth came to Wellington, little known to any of us. There was no flourishing of trumpets to herald this event. A few small advertisements in the local Press announced his meetings. . . His message was truly wonderful. If ever it could be said of a preacher of righteousness since the days of Philip that he preached Christ unto them, it surely would apply to Brother Wigglesworth. Never has the writer witnessed such scenes that followed the presentation of the Word of God by this Spirit-filled man, although being associated with such mighty evangelical services with Drs. Torrey, Henry Chapman and others in their New Zealand campaign. In the Wigglesworth services sometimes 400-500 responded in a meeting with whole families entering the Kingdom of God.”

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order.

Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

Further Teachings (Luke 16:14-18)
On that day.

What was written in the law and the prophets lasted until John. From then on the good news of the kingdom of God is being spread, and everyone is forcing their way in. However, it’s easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest point of the Law to disappear. Any man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery, and a man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

The Rich Man and the Beggar Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)
Jesus continued.

“Once there was a man who was rich. He wore purple clothes and fine linen, and enjoyed a luxurious life.
A beggar named Lazarus used to sit at his gate, covered in sores, longing to eat the leftovers from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
“Then the beggar died, and angels carried him away to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham in the far distance, with Lazarus beside him.
“‘Father Abraham,’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I’m burning in agony.’
“But Abraham replied, ‘My son, remember that you enjoyed the good things of life, while Lazarus had a very poor life. Now he is here being comforted, while you suffer in torment. Apart from that, there’s a great gulf stretches between us and you. Nobody who wants to cross from here to you can do so, and nobody can cross from there over to us.’
“The rich man said, ‘Then Father, I beg you, please send him to my father’s house. For I have five brothers and he can warn them so that they don’t end up here in this place of torment.’
“But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. They should listen to them.’
“‘No, father Abraham,’ said the man. ‘But they would repent if someone went to them from the dead!’
“Abraham said to him, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be convinced even if someone returns from the dead.’”

Instructions to the Disciples (Luke 17:1-10)
Jesus taught them.

“Temptations are unavoidable, but it will be a disaster for those through whom they come! For such people it would be better to have a millstone hung around the neck and thrown into the sea than to cause these little ones to sin. So take care what you do. If your brother sins, warn him; and if he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times comes back and tells you, ‘I’m really
sorry,’ forgive him.”

The disciples asked for more trust.

“Even if your trust was as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Uproot yourself, and plant yourself in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
“Say you have a servant who does plowing or shepherding. When he comes in from work, do you say to him, ‘Come in and sit down now for a meal’? No. You say to him, ‘Prepare a meal for me, get yourself dressed, and serve me until I’ve finished my meal. After that you can have your meal’? And do you thank the servant for doing what you told him? No. Likewise once you’ve done everything you were told, you should simply say, ‘We are undeserving servants. We just did our duty.’”

40.GENESIS 3:C-D
A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.
And it was a good animal.
And God was pleased.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.
And they were comforted.
And God was pleased.
And dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."

And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.
And Cat would not obey them.
And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.
And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was happy.
And Cat didn't care one way or the other.

39. HEAVENLY REWARD?
This 85-year-old couple, having been married almost 60 years, died in a car crash. They had been in good health the last 10 years, mainly due to her interest in health food and exercise.

When they reached the pearly gates, St. Peter took them to their mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen, master bath suite and Jacuzzi.

As they oohed and aahed, the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. "It's free," Peter replied. "This is Heaven."

Next they went out back to survey the championship golf course in the backyard. They would have golfing privileges every day, and each week the course would change to a new one, representing the great golf courses on Earth.

The old man asked, "What are the greens fees?"

Peter's reply, "This is Heaven -- you play for free."

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisine of the world laid out.

"How much to eat?" asked the old man.

"Don't you understand yet? This is Heaven, it's FREE!" Peter replied with some exasperation.

"Well, where are the low-fat and low-cholesterol tables?" the old man asked timidly.

Peter lectured, "That's the best part -- you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven."

With that the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stomping on it, and shrieking wildly.

Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong. The old man looked at his wife and said, "This is all your fault. If it weren't for your blasted bran muffins, I could have been here 10 years ago!"

JUST JOKES

219. AN OLD FILE
The police recently busted a man selling 'secret formula' tablets he claimed gave eternal youth. When going through their files they noticed it was the fifth time he was caught for committing this same criminal medical fraud.

He had earlier been arrested in 1794, 1856, 1928 and 1983...

218. WHAT'S IN A NAME?
On a street, where the speed is limited to 30 mph the police stop a driver. "Not only have you been driving too fast, you've been passing cars where it is not allowed. Your lights don't work, your tires all completely worn out. This is surely going to cost you a lot. What's your name?"

"Schtrathewisizeski Vocgefastilongchinic."

"Well, I'll let you go this time but don't do it again."

217. EXPENSIVE
A gorilla walked into a drugstore and ordered a $1.50 chocolate sundae. He put a ten-dollar bill on the counter to pay for it.

The clerk thought, what could a gorilla know about money? So he gave the gorilla a single dollar bill in change. As he did, the clerk said, "You know, we don't get too many gorillas in here."

"No wonder," the gorilla replied, "at nine dollars a sundae."

216. GOING METRIC!
When the metric system takes over, we have to change our thinking on the following:
* A miss is as good as 1.6 kilometers.
* Put your best 0.3 of a meter forward.
* Spare the 5.03 meters and spoil the child.
* Twenty-eight grams of prevention is worth 453 grams of cure.
* Give a man 2.5 centimeters and he'll take 1.609 kilometers.
* Peter Piper picked 8.8 liters of pickled peppers.

215. NOT SO STUPID
There's a little fellow named Bubba who hangs out at Martin's Convenience Store. Mr. Martin, the owner hasn't figured out what Bubba's problem is, but the boys 'round town like to tease him. They say he's not hittin' on all eight... just not too bright.

As evidence, often they'll offer lil' Bubba his choice between a nickel and a dime. Now Bubba, he always takes the nickel... They say, because it's 'bigger' and they all get a big chuckle.

One afternoon, just after Bubba grabbed his nickel, Mr. Martin pulled him off to one side and said, "Bubba, those boys are making fun of you. They think you don't know the dime is worth more than the nickel. Are you grabbing the nickel because it's bigger, or what?"

Bubba sorta grinned and said, "Well, if I took the dime, reckon they'd quit doing it!"

Many more just for a laugh here....

Missionary died thinking he was a failure; 84 years later thriving churches found hidden in the jungle

By Mark Ellis

In 1912, medical missionary Dr. William Leslie went to live and minister to tribal people in a remote corner of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After 17 years he returned to the U.S. a discouraged man – believing he failed to make an impact for Christ. He died nine years after his return.

But in 2010, a team led by Eric Ramsey with Tom Cox World Ministries made a shocking and sensational discovery. They found a network of reproducing churches hidden like glittering diamonds in the dense jungle across the Kwilu River from Vanga, where Dr. Leslie was stationed.

With the help of a Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot, Ramsey and his team flew east from Kinshasa to Vanga, a two and a half hour flight in a Cessna Caravan. After they reached Vanga, they hiked a mile to the Kwilu River and used dugout canoes to cross the half-mile-wide expanse. Then they hiked with backpacks another 10 miles into the jungle before they reached the first village of the Yansi people.

Based on his previous research, Ramsey thought the Yansi in this remote area might have some exposure to the name of Jesus, but no real understanding of who He is. They were unprepared for their remarkable find.

“When we got in there, we found a network of reproducing churches throughout the jungle,” Ramsey reports. “Each village had its own gospel choir, although they wouldn’t call it that,” he notes. “They wrote their own songs and would have sing-offs from village to village.”

They found a church in each of the eight

villages they visited scattered across 34 miles. Ramsey and his team even found a 1000-seat stone “cathedral” (pictured) in one of the villages. He learned that this church got so crowded in the 1980s – with many walking miles to attend — that a church planting movement began in the surrounding villages.

“There is no Bible in the Yansi language,” Ramsey says. “They used a French Bible, so those who taught had to be fluent in French.”

Apparently, Dr. Leslie crossed the Kwilu River once a year from Vanga and spent a month traveling through the jungle, carried by servants in a sedan chair.

“He would teach the Bible, taught the tribal children how to read and write, talked about the importance of education, and told Bible stories,” Ramsey notes. Dr. Leslie started the first organized educational system in these villages, Ramsey learned.

It took some digging for Ramsey to uncover Leslie’s identity. “The tribal people only knew him by one name and I didn’t know if that was a first or last name. They knew he was a Baptist and he was based in that one city and they knew the years.”

When Ramsey returned home he did some additional investigation and discovered Dr. Leslie was affiliated with the American Baptist Missionary Union. The American Baptist Missionary Union was founded in 1814 by Adoniram Judson, who led a pioneering work in Burma.

Born in Ontario, Canada, William H. Leslie followed his intended profession as a pharmacist until his conversion in 1888. He moved to the Chicago area, where God began to grip his heart with the desire to become a medical missionary.

Dr. Leslie initiated his Congo service in 1893 at Banza-Manteke. Two years later he developed a serious illness. A young missionary named Clara Hill took care of him until he recovered. Their budding friendship ripened into love and a marriage proposal. They were wed in 1896.

In 1905 William and Clara pioneered a work in Cuilo, Anglola, where they overcame a hurricane that struck the night before one of their children was born, and more mundane obstacles like charging buffaloes and armies of ants.

Seven years later they cleared enough of the leopard-infested jungle along the Kwilu River at Vanga for a new mission station perched on a small plateau. Some of the villages surrounding Vanga were still practicing cannibalism at that time.

They spent 17 years at Vanga, but their service ended on a rocky note. “Dr. Leslie had a relational falling out with some of the tribal leaders and was asked not to come back,” Ramsey says. “They reconciled later; there were apologies and forgiveness, but it didn’t end like he hoped.”

“His goal was to spread Christianity. He felt like he was there for 17 years and he never really made a big impact, but the legacy he left is huge.”

TABERNEAGLES (In 2 parts. Part 2 this week.)
A summary of one man’s vision for God’s final ‘Tabernacle’ (Apostolic) church, preparing to become the ‘bride’ that Jesus is returning for. The vision is soundly based upon the scriptures (not included here – found in Book Too of ‘Eagles Fly High!’ – ‘The First & Last Word’) illuminating the pattern of the ‘Feasts of The Lord’ in both the Old and New Testaments.

Drawn from the trilogy ‘Eagles Fly High!’, this picture of the final church is presented through prophecy, allegory, poetry, and scripturally based vision.

Definitely a tasty morsel for the hungry in God. For those seeking to discover more about God’s plans for their lives and the church as a whole. Find out all about the ‘Taberneagle Army’ that God is starting to raise up at this critical time in our history.

WAXING LYRICAL

This tale was written over a 'period of waiting', while seeking premises for a store we wished to open for africa arise'. Go through all the emotions before giving it all to God!

WAITING (Part 2)

Monday comes, another deal.
Great rent, it's a steal!
At last, something now, to us to show,
But is it the best, must wait to know.

Two weeks more,
Before we hear,
A deal in store,
Or a bum steer?

But now peace reigns,
God makes the gains.
It's all up to Him,
The battle to win.

Nothing to do but only wait.
Easier now for David Tait.
As I trust Him even more,
For what He has in store.

Wednesday, a call out of the blue,
Sounds too good, to be true.
New on the market that very day.
Maybe for this, has been the delay.

An offer on Friday,
Now wait some more,
Hear on Tuesday,
If not before.

'Just rest in me, my son,
In my time, it is done.
Trust me more and more,
I will open the door.'

The days pass.
Am at peace.
Nothings fast,
With a lease!

Late Thursday afternoon,
Could it be so soon?
An agreement comes,
Have done their sums.

It is all we requested,
Bar one point or two.
Our prayer is answered,
'It's God's gift to you!'

Friday morning,
Points included,
No more waiting,
Signature added.

Deal is done!
Now the fun!
Getting started,
Waiting departed.

Thank you so much Lord!
We are in one accord.
It surely has to be of you,
Deal's too good to be true!

Lord, as I now muse on what I've learned,
I see that more of you, I have discerned.
Now know I can always rely upon You in all You ask me I do,
Just need to wait, to rest, to fully trust, yes, it's true.

A DAVID MUSING

Today (Sunday) I will be speaking in a church in Pakistan from the 'comfort' of my office here in Napier New Zealand. This is possible through the provision of the internet and the technology of Skype.

Compared to the sacrifice of Dr William Leslie (see article above) who made the sacrifice to travel to what then, over a 100 years ago, truly was 'darkest Africa', my sacrifice is simply a couple of hours on a Sunday evening, when I would normally be home with my wife, likely watching TV!

The world is indeed a small place now. The internet, like the telephone before it, is simply a means of communication. It can be used for good or evil, as the user desires. It has enabled me to communicate with you. Your decision as to whether that is good or bad! LOL!

The Gospel of Jesus can now be transmitted in so many ways. The photo shows a previous seminar in Pakistan. My words are being translated by the pastor's wife Shazia, with my face being shown on the screen by her side while I get reaction from a webcam. My thanks to Peter Julious for organising this and the service today in his church.

I hope this gives you some ideas of what is possible. May I encourage you to be creative in the ways you use to spread the Good News too. But remember, the best witness always has been, and remains, a godly life.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

David Tait

Each week we can lose up to 2% of our readers when they change email addresses without letting us know. Or sometimes, by your server acting strangely and just cutting us off! If you are about to change your address, please advise us of both your old and new addresses here at
enquiries@wwj.org.nz and we will happily change our records to ensure ongoing delivery. Thanks.

Please also keep our address in your address book, as sometimes servers will automatically delete your address if there is even a one off problem in delivery. If your newsletter doesn't arrive, please let us know and we will reinstate you.

ABOUT US

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
