TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'
A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 21 weeks of PGIM)FROM “ORGANIZED†TO “ORGANIC†(Continued)
We saw 7 weeks ago.......
"under the Old Covenant there was a separation between the Priests and the people, something which re-entered the Christian church through the Roman Catholics and despite attempts to get rid of it through the Reformation, effectively is still with us today, in so many ways."
Then 6 weeks ago.......
At the time of the death of Jesus, a miracle took place (the curtain in the Temple torn from top to bottom opening up, once again, direct access for us to the Father) signifying the change from the Old Covenant to the New. For it was the direct result of, and response to, what happened when Jesus died on the cross.
So what then, are the implications of this change in Covenants?
Over the past 5 weeks.....
1. WE NOW HAVE A PERMANENT SACRIFICE MADE ON OUR BEHALF
2. SALVATION HAS BECOME A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
3. THE KINGDOM IS FOUND WITHIN US
4. IMPLICATIONS OF THE KINGDOM WITHIN
5. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CHURCH
a. THE CHURCH IS NOT THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION
b. GOD'S CALL IS TO 'GO OUT', NOT TO 'COME IN'
This week.....
c. CHURCH IS PEOPLE, FIRST AND LAST (Part 1)
Under the Old Covenant (Testament) the Tabernacle, then the Temple, was the place where the presence of God primarily dwelled, and to which the people were called to worship Him a minimum of 3 times a year.....
The Three Annual Festivals
14 “Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me. 15 “Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt. “No one is to appear before me empty-handed. 16 “Celebrate the Feast of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. “Celebrate the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field. 17 “Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD. 18 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast. “The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning. 19 “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. “Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk. (Exodus 23:19)
Jesus came to replace the temple with Himself! He predicted the destruction of the physical temple, (which happened in the physical too, in AD70).....
Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?†he asked. “I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.†(Matthew 24:1-2)
The people, then and now, cannot understand the revolution that would take place with the death and resurrection of Jesus. They, and we, continue to look for a 'place' to worship God, when we should instead, be looking to a 'person'. For the new 'temple' referred to was the resurrected body of Jesus, as He had predicted.....
Jesus Again Predicts His Death
17 Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19 and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!†(Matthew 20:17-19)
When He was crucified the people mocked Him.....
39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!†(Matthew 27:39-40)
And as indeed happened, for Jesus explained after His resurrection.....
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. (Luke 24:45-8)
He told them to wait for an incredible personal experience.....
49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.†(Luke 24:49)
.....when through the anointing of the Holy Spirit 40 days later, at Pentecost, the temple would also become you and me!.....
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
We have to live our lives in a holy way, in order to honour the temple within.....
19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Paul again, puts it very strongly!.....
18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. (Romans 6:18)
Having established that we are indeed God's living temples, we will next week, investigate the implications of this revolutionary change, for the church.
(This theme to be continued next week.)

FROM THE WORD
The CrucifixionAs they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!†In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,†they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’†In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus
From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?â€â€”which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?†When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.†Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.†And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!â€" (Matthew 27:32-54)
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
"While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.†They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.†When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?†They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.†Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.â€" (Luke 24:36-49)
Sexual Immorality
"“Everything is permissible for meâ€â€”but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for meâ€â€”but I will not be mastered by anything. “Food for the stomach and the stomach for foodâ€â€”but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.†But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM1041. Revelation and religion make incompatible companions.
1042. Religion resists change while revelation requires it!
1043. Revelation formalised soon becomes religion institutionalised.
1044. God's kingdom breeds revelation, religion, rules.
1045. Religion is man's adaptation of God's revelation.
1046. When religion fails you, turn to God.
1047. So often the church attempts to compete with God's kingdom rather than promoting it.
1048. God's vision is our mission.
1049. Religion is the eager repository of yesterday's revelation.
1050. Revelation is eternal truth meeting today's circumstances.
1051. Revelation is from God's heart, religion, a product of the heart of man.
1052. Today's revelation becomes tomorrow's religion.

634. LESSONS FROM THE 23RD PSALM
A pastor was giving a lesson to a group of children on the 23rd Psalm. He noticed that one of the little boys seemed disquieted by the phrase "Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life..."
"What's wrong with that, Johnny?" the pastor asked.
"Well," answered Johnny, "I understand about having goodness and mercy, for God is good. But I'm not sure I'd like Shirley following me around all the time."
633. A MODERN GOD
When I picked up my then 4 year old daughter from religious school one Sunday, I asked her what she had learned.
She proceeded to tell me how God had made night and day one day, and the heavens and earth another, the plants, fish, animals, etc. on other days.
"And do you know what He did on the seventh day" she said. "Arrested people!"
632. TALE OF TWO PRAWNS
Far away in the tropical waters of the Caribbean, two prawns were swimming around in the sea - one called Justin and the other called Christian.
Prawns were constantly being harassed and threatened by sharks that patrolled the area. Finally, one day during a tropical storm, Justin said to Christian, "I'm bored and frustrated at being a prawn, I wish I was a shark - and then I wouldn't have any worries about being eaten..."
As Justin had his mind firmly on becoming a predator, a flash of lightning hits the water and lo and behold, Justin turns into a shark. Horrified, Christian immediately swims away, afraid of being eaten by his old mate.
Time went on, and Justin found himself becoming bored and lonely as a shark. All his old friends simply swam away whenever he came close to them, Justin hardly realizing that his new menacing appearance was the cause of his sad plight.
During the next tropical storm, Justin figures that the same lightning force could change him back into a prawn. Lightning never strikes twice except in stories like these, but while he was thinking of being a prawn again, a flash of lightning strikes the water next to Justin and lo and behold, he turns back into a prawn. With tears of joy in his tiny little eyes Justin swims back to his friends and buys them all a cocktail.
Looking around the gathering at the reef, he looks for his old pal. "Where's Christian?" he asked. "He's at home, distraught that his best friend changed sides to the enemy and became a shark" came the reply.
Eager to put things right again and end the mutual pain and torture, he sets off to Christian's house. As he opens the coral gate, the memories come flooding back. He bangs on the door and shouts "It's me, Justin, your old friend. Come out and see me again!"
Christian replies, "No way man. You'll eat me. You're a shark; the enemy. I will not be tricked."
Justin cries back, "No I'm not. That was the old me. I've changed ...
.... I'm a prawn again Christian.... !!"

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: In terms of chemical composition, what substance does human blood most closely resemble?ANSWER: The substance chemically closest to blood is seawater. In fact, the saline solution which is used in intravenous injections, ‘normal saline’, is 0.9% salt to water, the same salinity as seawater. It's also the salinity of amniotic fluid, the liquid that surrounded all of us in utero, before we were born. Of course, seawater contains lots of other ‘trace minerals’, which are mostly also present in blood. Yes, human plasma closely resembles seawater. (So sailors really do have the blood of the sea coursing through their veins?)

Peace for Christians, Muslims in Kaduna
April 16th, 2013 by George WhittenBy Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent
nigeria-map2ABUJA, NIGERIA (Worthy News)– Peace overtures between Christians and Muslims in Kaduna state, Nigeria, briefly became a reality as both religions joined together on Easter Monday to celebrate, according to allAfrica news.
For years, religious unrest in Kaduna had led to violence and destruction, creating divides between Christian and Muslim, but on Easter Monday, Pastor Yohanna Buru, Chairman and founder of the Peace, Revival and Reconciliation Foundation of Nigeria, said peace was why he invited Muslims to rejoice with Christians.
"We want to break the cord of hatred between Muslims and Christians in this state and in Nigeria at large, and we believe that little by little, we will overcome the threat to peace and peaceful coexistence," he said.
"Every person whether young or old, male or female, Christian or Muslim must contribute their quota of peace because without peace, we cannot live; without peace, we cannot progress, neither can we practice our faith. We must all preach peace. Stop spreading rumor, stop saying what is not there and don't hate anybody because of his/her tribe or religion; we are all created by God."
Salihu Ibrahim, chairman of Sabon Kawo Youths Development Association, said Kaduna state is divided along religious lines, unlike when Christians and Muslims, irrespective of tribe, lived and celebrated together in peace.
"But now the seed of discord has been sown between Christians and Muslims and as such we run away from each other," Ibrahim said. "Muslims no longer live with Christians because of fear, and vice versa …"
On that same note, Ibrahim Ahmadu, president of the Rigasa Action and Awareness Forum, said Christians and Muslims who formerly attended school together, have now gone their separate ways.
However, on last Easter Monday, those ways briefly became one.

A REVELATION OF…….THE 3 GARDENS OF GODHaving spent much of my life involved in the gardening industry, as a grower, wholesaler of flowers, bulbs and plants and finally as a mail order seller of the same, this revelation has reached into my 'gardeners' heart!
Gardens and nature have a special place in God's heart too. This is not surprising, for He was their creator! Nor is it surprising then, that He should choose garden settings for key events in His interaction with man to take place.
Let's see what they are.

WAXING LYRICAL
Some people can inspire in the midst of terminal pain and suffering, My mate Basil was one of those.BASIL
It comes to us all, once to die,
Our best to ignore it, we do try.
Don’t know how, nor when, nor where,
Until death, in the face, does us stare.
For most, the sands of time predictably flow,
Plenty of life, our ultimate destiny to know,
Three score years and ten, normally more,
The last few perhaps, may be a chore.
For some though, death comes as a shock,
A life snuffed out at the tick of a clock,
In the fiery inferno of a collapsing tower,
Or a car, ramming another at full power.
But our Basil was chosen for a different task,
A walk through sickness and pain was his ask.
God knew what an inspiration he would be,
And he surely was, both to you and to me.
Basil I have known for a good number of years,
A wise man, a prophet, somewhat given to tears,
A man well respected, both at church and at home,
Salt of the earth, with not too much hair to comb.
But it was only during this current year,
That Basil’s character became so clear,
Oh, what had I missed out on, in days now past,
In a busy life, where spending time, comes last.
Unless the house has been built on a firm foundation,
Trials and troubles easily lead to spiritual ruination.
But through his pain, the light of his Saviour did shine,
What I saw in his life, I would like to see in mine.
Of course, he did naturally ask the question,
“Why me Lord?†I did hear him mention.
Then his wry sense of humour would shine through,
As into perspective, his whole life came into view.
Basil has been an inspiration to us all,
Through his trials, he has walked tall,
The quiet man - thought he had little to offer,
In his ultimate test, came through to conquer.
Basil my mate, us you still inspire,
In that certain faith, we so desire.
I will miss you my friend, so Basil tears I now shed,
As I seek to follow the path, in which you have led.

On Thursday, Kathy and I celebrated our 43rd Wedding Anniversary. Where has the time gone? Do we look like each other? Fortunately for Kathy - not! LOL!Actually, we celebrated apart, for Kathy is attending the annual Eye Conference in Auckland (450km away), as part of one of her jobs as a nurse with a local, Napier, Eye Surgeon. Actually, we had an early celebration, but I am still looking forward to her coming home on Sunday (writing this on Saturday) so we can celebrate some more!
Over the years we have grown to be more like each other (and like each other more!) than when we first married. Our journey through married life has had its ups and downs, so we now have a long history of shared experiences and look forward to many more still the come - the Lord willing.
Our relationship with Jesus should be the same. Not like Him physically, but ever more alike in attitude and Spirit.
How is your relationship with Him today?
PS: Surely we look far too young to have been married 43 years!!!
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
