DAVID AND KATHY ARE SHIFTING TO KENYA TO LIVE! Part 2
A CALL TO CHANGELast week I said that my wife Kathy and myself were shifting to Webuye, in Western Kenya, to live on a long term basis, from mid 2017.
Why would we go? To be honest, most people here in New Zealand think we are mad! Believers and non-believers alike! Why would we leave a comfortable life here in our beautiful country of New Zealand, where many in the world would love to live but can't, to go to the wilds of Africa where we will get eaten by lions, trodden upon by elephants, and ravaged by disease, to say nothing of the people! And at our (supposedly) advanced age of 69!
Simply, because God told us to!
In reality, New Zealand is not as idyllic as it may seem nor, and more importantly in our situation, Africa is not at all like most Westerners imagine it to be. No, most do not have the material possessions we have in the West, but their ability to be content in the little they do have, is incredible. As a people in general, they are far happier than we are in the West with the complicated, ever striving for more, lifestyle we 'enjoy'.
That aside, the basic reason people think we are mad, is because of an aversion to change. Wherever we live in the world, unless circumstances are dire, we have a natural, human, aversion to change. Unfortunately for disciples of Jesus, God is a God of change. Unless we are born in the spiritual likeness of Jesus, (certainly not me), we need to be transformed into His image.....
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)
Unfortunately, it doesn't happen magically, with the click of a finger, as some people think or would like, but is a lifelong process of discipleship leading to personal righteousness and holiness....
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-4)
OBEDIENCE IS THE KEY
In this situation of our relocation to Africa, we could have said, "Not us Lord, for we are too old, or too tired, or not equipped or too comfortable or...... the excuses are endless."
We have to consider to whom we are obedient.....
Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16)
So we have the choice, called freewill - to be obedient to God, or to disobey Him, which is sin and leads to spiritual death. Do we listen to our human excuses, or do we listen to God?
John puts it beautifully.....
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. (2 John 1:6)
Whom and what do we love most? Ourselves as we are? ie. no change. Or God?
The choice is ours.
The photo is of David and Selina Walukhu, (in the house in which we will live), our partners in this project, celebrating their 21st Wedding Anniversary. David is the overseer (bishop) over 400 churches in the local area. Selina is an entrepreneur and teacher. Both are highly regarded by the Government and the people of the Webuye district.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Parables by the Lake (Matthew 13:1-35, Mark 4:1-34, Luke 8:4-18)
Told from a boat anchored away from the shore, out there because of the size of the crowd.
Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23, Mark 4:1-29)
“As he was sowing, some of the seeds fell on the path. The birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on stony ground where there wasn’t much earth where they sprouted quickly. The sun rose and scorched them and they withered because they had no roots. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked them. Still other seeds fell on good soil. They produced a harvest—some one hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what had been planted. Anybody who has ears should be listening!
The disciples asked why he spoke in parables.
“You’re privileged to have revealed to you the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but they’re not given such insights,†“Those who already have will have more given to them, more than enough. But those who don’t have, whatever they have will be taken away from them. That’s why I speak to them in illustrations. For even though they see, they do not see; and even though they hear, they do not hear; nor do they understand.
“The prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in them: ‘Even though you hear, you won’t understand, and even though you see, you won’t perceive. They have a hard-hearted attitude, they don’t want to listen, and they’ve closed their eyes. If they didn’t they might be able to see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and understand in their minds. Then they could return to me and I would heal them.’
“Your eyes are blessed, for they see. Your ears are blessed too, for they hear. I’m telling you, many prophets and good people longed to see what you’re seeing, but didn’t see it. They longed to hear what you’re hearing, but didn’t hear it.
“So listen to the story of the sower. When people hear the message about the kingdom, and don’t understand it, the evil one comes along and rips out what was sown in their heart. This is what happens to the seeds sown on the path. The seeds sown on stony ground are people who hear the message and happily accept it straight away. They last for a while, but because they don’t have roots, when problems and troubles come, they quickly fall away. The seeds sown among thorns are people who hear the message, but then life’s worries and the temptation of money choke the message so that they become fruitless. The seeds sown on good soil are people who hear the message, and understand it, and who produce a good harvest—some one hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown.â€
Lamp on a Stand (Mark 4:21-5)
“Who puts a lamp under a bucket, or beneath a bed?†“No, you put a lamp up on a lampstand. Everything that is hidden will be revealed, and everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. 23If you have ears to hear, listen to what I’m saying! Pay attention to what you’re hearing,†“for you will be given according to how much you want to receive, measure for measure. More will be given to those who already have understanding, but those who don’t want to know will have what little understanding they have taken from them.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
SERMON ON THE MOUNT THE KINGDOM WAY:JESUS’ GUIDE TO LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE TODAY
We look at the Bible, and sometimes it overwhelms us – or it does me! How can I extract from all the vast wisdom it contains, the principles for living a kingdom lifestyle today?
I couldn’t! So I asked the lord what was the answer to me seeking! A very sensible thing to do when in this situation, don’t you think? And He showed me! A brilliant summary of kingdom living is contained in just 3 chapters of the Bible, Matthew chapters 5-7, in what we know as the ‘Sermon on the Mount’.
Then He proceeded to explain to me what they mean, and this is what I am sharing with you now. May you be challenged, encouraged and built up in living for the Lord as I have been in bringing it to you, through both exposition and my personal experiences, both good and bad.

422. GLADLY
A child came home from Sunday School and told his mother that he had learned a new song about a cross-eyed bear named Gladly.
It took his mother a while before she realized that the hymn was really "Gladly The Cross I'd Bear."
421. THE NEW PREACHER
There was a new preacher who wanted to rent a house in the country. The only house available was rumoured to be haunted. Since the preacher didn't believe in such things, he rented it.
It wasn't long before the ghost made its appearance. The preacher told his friends about the ghost, but they didn't believe him. They told him the only way they would believe was if he would take a picture of the ghost.
The preacher went home and called for the ghost. When it appeared, the preacher explained the situation and asked the ghost if it would mind having its picture taken. The ghost agreed.
When the picture was developed, the ghost wasn't visible. Feeling very disappointed, the preacher called again for the ghost. When it appeared, the preacher showed it the picture and wanted to know why the ghost wasn't in it.
The ghost thought a minute and replied, "Well, I guess the spirit was willing, but the flash was weak."
420. COWBOY JOE
Cowboy Joe was telling his fellow cowboys back on the ranch about his first visit to a big-city church.
"When I got there, they had me park my old truck in the corral," Joe began.
"You mean the parking lot," interrupted Charlie, a more worldly fellow.
"I walked up the trail to the door," Joe continued.
"The sidewalk to the door," Charlie corrected him.
"Inside the door, I was met by this dude," Joe went on.
"That would be the usher," Charlie explained.
"Well, the usher led me down the chute," Joe said.
"You mean the aisle," Charlie said.
"Then, he led me to a stall and told me to sit there," Joe continued.
"Pew," Charlie retorted.
"Yeah," recalled Joe. "That's what that pretty lady said when I sat down beside her."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: When was the first animal cloned?ANSWER: Surprisingly, as far back as 1952, when scientists successfully cloned tadpoles. They were drawing on research that went back to 1938, when a German scientist developed a theory on how to clone vertebrates by nuclear transfer. (But did they develop into frogs?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: How far can a kangaroo jump?
297. A LIVING MUSEUM
Many of the Vatican’s museums were never intended to be museums at all, but were designed instead as unique apartments or residences. As a result, visitors must work their way through the numerous blind passages and bottlenecks that contain many of the most beautiful works housed there. (Were the residents museum pieces also?)
298. DREAMS IN THE SKY
A beautiful mirage called the Fata Morgana appears in the Straits of Messina, between Sicily and Italy. It is an image of a town in the sky, but seems more like a fairy landscape than a real town. It is most likely to be a mirage of a fishing village situated along the coast. (Like catching fish. Now you see it, now you don’t!)
299. GILBERT
The most intense hurricane to hit the Caribbean was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Wind gusts were measured at over 200 miles per hour (320kmh). (All cyclones used to be named after women. Feminists blew up a storm to get this changed. Wonder why? I know, I know…)

314. WASTE OF TIMEA hillbilly was making his first visit to a hospital where his teenage son was about to have an operation. Watching the doctor's every move, he asked, "What's that?"
The doctor explained, "This is an anesthetic. After he gets this he won't know a thing."
"Save your time, Doc," exclaimed the man. "He don't know nothing now."
313. NOT ENOUGH TIME
My wife was complaining that I spend too much time on the computer, and not enough time with her. I decided to fix that by having a `movie night` with her.
We watched `Hackers`, `The Net`, `Anti-Trust`, `You've Got Mail` and The Matrix.

311. WHACK!
Two men are driving through Texas when they get pulled over by a state trooper. The trooper walks up and taps on the window with his nightstick, the driver rolls down the window and "WHACK," the trooper smacks him in the head with the stick.
The driver says, "What the heck was that for?"
The trooper says, "You're in Texas, son. When we pull you over, you better have your license ready when we get to your car."
The driver says, "I'm sorry, officer, I'm not from around here."
The trooper runs a check on the guy's license, and he's clean. He gives the guy his license back and walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window. The passenger rolls his window down, and "WHACK," the trooper smacks him with the nightstick, too.
The passenger says, "What did you do that for?"
The trooper says, "Just making your wish come true."
The passenger says, "Huh?"
The trooper says, "I know that two miles down the road you're gonna say, 'I wish that jerk would've tried that bull with me.'"

Calif. Pastor: Don't Let Setbacks, Religion Steal Your 'God-Dreams'
BY BRANDON SHOWALTER , CP REPORTERJan 24, 2017 | 10:28 AM
A California pastor who was raised in a dysfunctional, racially prejudiced family and in harsh, religious fundamentalism now leads one of the most racially diverse churches in Los Angeles. And he is also now unleashing thousands of people into the dreams God has given them to change the world.
Philip Wagner, Pastor of Oasis Church in Los Angeles, author of Unlock Your Dream
Philip Wagner, 63, together with Holly, his wife of 32 years, have been leading Oasis Church for the past three decades and spearheads Generosity.org, an initiative to bring clean, safe drinking water to impoverished nations of the world. The Christian Post recently spoke with Wagner about his new book Unlock Your Dream: Discover the Adventure You were Created For and how God's redemptive hand has transformed his own story.
Below is the transcript of the interview which has been lightly edited for length.
CP: Pastor Wagner, could you describe the importance and relationship of dreams and faith in Jesus Christ?
Wagner: Being a pastor in Los Angeles, people come from all over the world to LA to pursue a dream. It's the city of dreams. Even the movie that's just come out, La La Land that's popular. I think it's 100,000 people a year come in and out of LA searching for their dreams. It's not just exclusive to Hollywood or LA. I've been to many countries, in Africa, Uganda, Haiti, and everybody has a dream in their heart.
And I like to say, you don't have to have just one dream. You can have more than one. What I've noticed is that people get discouraged, people lose hope, people forget about it. And I think that we're created to have dreams. It says in Proverbs that hope deferred makes the heart sick. But a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. I wanted to encourage people to rediscover the dreams they have in their life. Maybe review it and get a better picture of what that is. A lot of it came from my own experience because of some of the experience of what I'm doing now. So it really came through [in what] I've written about in the book.
Close ad X
CP: In Unlock Your Dream, you write at considerable length about "God-dreams." What is the difference between a God-dream and just a dream?
Wagner: I think that God-dreams are ones that we're created to do. I like to tell people that your other dreams—I've always wanted to go on vacation here, travel there, etc.—all those are great as long as they don't lead you away from the God-dreams. The God-dreams are like the things that God has for you to do and it usually has to do with touching other people's lives, reaching other people. There are things that we can achieve in this life, but when we leave earth we're going to leave all those things behind. But the things that we're not going to leave behind are the people we've touched for the Kingdom, who we have helped. In a way, it is who we have helped reach their dreams. So looking around and seeing the needs and we start to recognize that "Hey, there's something that I can contribute here." I think when we help others reach their dreams it changes us. In the book I say that "some people follow their dreams only to discover that other kind of dream that involves reaching beyond themselves that to change the world for others."
CP: If you had to describe the heartbeat of Unlock Your Dream, what would it be?
Wagner: To continue to reach for the God-dreams to move toward them and not give up. We face setbacks. We tend to think that if we're on track with God's will it's going to be easier. And it's not necessarily. I kind of relate it to marriage. You're in love, you're excited and you get married. And then, you have problems. You fight, you disagree, struggle. And so many people think "Well, I married the wrong person." You're probably just normal. Because everybody has to work for it and grow. It doesn't mean that you married the wrong person. It means God has something for you as a couple to grow it. So the point of the book, which is to not to put their dreams on lockdown, not let other people tell you it's too late. But if it's God's dream for your life then keep going, keep moving.
CP: It seems to me that unfortunately in some churches, religion has a way of quashing people's dreams. Can you speak to the importance of shedding religious, behavior-controlling mindsets in order to unlock dreams?
Wagner: Many great things that God has done on earth has been somebody who is doing something a little different or it's a fresh perspective. So I think the religious part of it is that we try to set limitations and set what's right and what's wrong for other people. Of course, we have to follow scriptural guidelines but it's God's guidelines, not ours. When I was a kid I was brought up in a very fundamentalist home. Our whole thing was "well, everybody else was wrong." It's not life-giving. So then whether you're overcoming religious limitations or shame from your parents or families or failures, all those things that steal the dreams from our lives.
Just think of the apostle Paul. Somebody could go "Well, Jesus could save you but he could never use you to build the church because look what you've done in your life. But that's not how God see things. He has a way of qualifying the disqualified. And that's what Christianity is about.
One of the things I like to say is that the extraordinary is hidden in the ordinary. A lot of people don't do things because they're looking for that big thing. Maybe that happens for some people. Mostly for me it has been being faithful with a little ordinary thing and that's what opened the door. And that's what led me to the next thing. And the purpose of God kind of unfolds. He doesn't give us that "Here's 5 things You're Going To Do In Your Life." It kind of gets revealed to us. And the pain from our past can serve a purpose, rather than it being a limitation and a negative thing. God has a way of using our problems and pains to bring a [redemptive] message.

A brief overview of 'walking with Jesus'.JESUS
Don't want to know, need never tell,
What life is like, down there in Hell!
I look up to Heaven,
To avoid the leaven.
For the sin in life,
Gets me in strife,
But Jesus forgave,
My soul to save.
To believe in Him, to walk in His way,
To do his will, His commands to obey,
To my soul, it does now ring a chord.
Jesus: my friend, my master, my Lord.

A DAVID MUSING
Well, back home to ordinary life! As you will know (hopefully if you read the editorials!) the ordinary New Zealand life is now a temporary one for us. It does give one a different perspective! What will I miss when we go to Kenya? What won't I miss!
The reality is we get too comfortable in every day life. Not truly appreciating the good - living with the bad.
Spiritually, we do the same. Carry on in the same old ways week after week, year after year.
We don't truly appreciate the good, nor deal with the bad - in our own lives, in our church situation, in relationships, and more.
For Kathy and I it is a time of reflection and change. How will we cope with it? Time will tell! But I can see in my mind's eye God looking down and having a bit of a laugh!
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
