CROSS WITH THE CROSS - WHOSE PASSION?
As the world heads towards the opening week of "The Passion of the Christ", it seems the perfect time to reflect on what truly is at the centre of our Christian faith. Is it the Cross, or the Resurrection, the Asuncion, entrance to the Holy of Holies or maybe even, simply - Love?Is the release of one man's graphic, violent, view about the last 12 hours of our Saviour's life going to help or hinder 'the cause'? How true to reality is it? We will soon know - or will we? For each has our own preconceptions of that terrible yet glorious day. And as it is rare for two Christians to agree on anything, this surely will be little different!
But what truly makes me 'cross' (in a very holy way, of course!) is how many Christians are saying that the Cross is not the centre of our faith, anyway. Sometimes I wonder whether we all read the same Bible - or not. Maybe that is the problem - we don't spend enough time in it!
I am one of those strange people who reads the Word right through, from beginning to end. I do this deliberately, for my hearts desire is to have an understanding of the whole Word of God, not simply those bits which I might like, and can easily accept.
And if you do this with an open heart I am sure you will become as convinced as I am of the centrality of that 'awe-ful' Cross, as the fulfillment of the Scriptures.
For the Bible is a record of the creation of mankind, made to fellowship with God, to relate because we choose to. The human race, our ancestors, decided to follow their own way and was separated from their God through sin. All this happens in the first few chapters! The bulk of the story is about God's programme of reconciliation to Him which, whether we like or understand it, or not, is based on the principle of 'blood sacrifice', of a life for a life. It is gory, it is horrible, but it is reality! but not as horrible as sin is in God's sight!
The immense, bloody, smelly, fearful, (for the animals and their owners) animal sacrifices required under the Law of the Old Testament, (Covenant) were replaced by the ultimate, loving gift of God's final sacrifice of His Son, in the New, everlasting Covenant. This is the basic story of the Bible.
Because we no longer have to participate physically, in the horror and reality of blood sacrifice, we tend to downgrade the reality of that fearful, terrible death of a Son torn away from the love and fellowship of His Father, so that we might be restored to our God.
Does Jesus command us to remember anything other than His death? Communion, the Lord's Supper, is all about commemorating the pain and suffering of that vital day in History. When the unbelievable weight of all our sins were placed upon His shoulders as He died an agonizing, unwarranted, sacrificial death for you and for me.
Of course He conquered death and rose again. Of course He has promised to come again. But without the Cross, none of this would have been possible. His ultimate love was found in His sacrifice. May we never forget.
Mel Gibson may have got it basically right, likely in some areas, he is wrong. But what an opportunity to share the power of the sacrifice of Jesus with those who do not yet know or understand the truth of that pivotal day in history. Let's not waste the opportunity by resorting to our normal 'crucifixion of each other' tactics. Rather, let's take the message of the one, final, true crucifixion to a truly needy world. A world consigned to death and Hell, (what an un PC word!) a world doomed if they don't discover the true meaning of that violent, horrific day in human history.

FROM THE WORD
LONG BUT INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT"The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.†So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. (Genesis 3:21-24)
"For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may an alien living among you eat blood.†"Any Israelite or any alien living among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth, because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.†(Exodus 17:11-14)
"First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them†(although the law required them to be made). Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.†He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." (Hebrews 10:8-14)
"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.†In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.†For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world." (I Corinthians 1123-32)
"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God." (Galatians 6:14-16)
"When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (Colossians 2:13-15)

MINISTRY AND FAMILY PROBLEMSDear David
Praise God for your safe return. Don't we take our modern travels methods a little for granted until the worst happens. So as you didn't say it in your latest newsletter, then perhaps we should say it for you... Thank you Lord!.
Some humble comment on your above thoughts.
I feel that while many churches, denomination or fellowships do excellent work, there is always serious concern should they ever become 'sect like' in their religious practices and 'controlling' of its people's faith and pocket. It is also of grave concern should they evidence any reliance on bricks and mortar or guilt driven offerings from their people to survive in a business like manner.
Sound familiar? Well it should, as there are few denominations in the history of Christianity that have not fallen short of Christ's instructions to love God, love thy neighbour and love thy enemy, but have at the same time been very successful at counting their new members, new churches and yes new denominations. It is interesting that they never seem to count the results of their unintended schismatic plants, successful and unsuccessful alike. While Jesus' recommended method of prayer was a 'go into thy closet',
and inexpensive private approach to faith in obedience to God, he also encouraged group prayer 'where one or more gather', a much more expensive approach, for the cost is matched by the requirement to house the numbers gathering if suitable facilities do not already exist.
And this is surely the crux of the problem. I visited a church recently that had the 'blessing' of a modern hall available to them for hire at just $20 per Sunday service, with no maintenance contribution required. It was able to seat tenfold their present numbers, yet, here they were considering 'building' their own facility at considerable expense and debt requirement in a less affluent community. Don't get me wrong, I am not against a church or fellowship community planning wisely for the future, but I would caution them to recognise God's blessings in deciding the 'when' and 'how to' as opposed to their own 'desire driven' decision making.
Christ's 'call to serve' has been consistently misinterpreted by church administrators who have been hell bent on putting their church's 'financial survival' in their own mammon-like hands rather than God's will for them. Such business style church wrongly encourages adoption of the upright 'pyramid' model of authority (top down management) as opposed to the upturned pyramid or 'spinning top' model of servitude (bottom up service).
The mental picture of the fixed and heavy footed immobile pyramid structure and the unfixed and mobile spinning top structure, actually provide very good comparative analogies of the choices available fulfilling Christ's mission. The former restrictive model guarantees the ongoing business of being church where the sharing of the gospel is bound by those in control. The latter model is a vastly superior one for fulfilling the Holy Spirit empowered and servant led discipling mission that Christ instructed when he
said 'go into all the world and spread the gospel to all mankind'.
I give thanks for your ministry and the opportunity to have this say. I pray that it may be a helpful wake up call to many in search of God's, not man's way.
Blessings

AN EXPERIENCE FROM THE PHILIPPINES
I unfortunately missed out on preaching to the largest, 10,000 member congregation in Davao - although I did get to meet most of them.
My host Rolando's church is based in the slum area and is attended by 50 people and 9,950 mosquitoes! The majority of the members are water baptised at birth in the stagnant pools surrounding the church.
A blood sucking Filipino experience.
DAVE , ARE ALL "BORN AGAIN MORSQUITOS" ??? THESE MOSQUITOS KNOWS THAT YOU ARE FROM NEW ZEALAND AND THEY ARE FEASTING ! LEARN SOME PRINCIPLES OR SECRETS TO AVOID "BLOOD SUCKING" FROM MOSQUITOS.VERY SIMPLE . NEXT TIME , WE WILL SLEEP IN THE SLUM AREA AND I WILL SHOW YOU THE STRATEGY AND SIMPLE PRINCIPLE . ...
A FILIPINO EXPERIENCE
Just before leaving, I was taken to a 500 store Shopping Mall which was huge, covering 4 floors in one of the suburbs of Manila.
I was told that this was a small mall, the largest being 3-4 times the size. Indeed that one is the largest mall in Asia. You can't see all of it in a day!
There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor in this country, with very few people in between. A result of the terrible corruption that pervades all areas of society - including some of the church.
If you are donating money to this country, as is the case with many others too, you need to be sure that it is getting to where it is meant to go. Demand accountability.
YES , CORRUPTION IS EVERYWHERE AND ALSO IN OTHER THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES IN ASIA THAT I TRAVELLED AND ALSO IN AFRICA .TERRIBLE!!!. DONATING MONEY TO ANY ORGANIZATION NEEDS WISDOM ,DISCERNMENT AND ALSO THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY,INTEGRITY OF THAT ORGANIZATION. THE PROBLEM IF YOU WILL DIRECT THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE PERSON NOT TO THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF THE ORGANIZATION. WE MUST CHECK ALSO IF THAT ORGANIZATION HAS STRONG MANAGEMENT SYSTEM LIKE FINANCE DEPT/COMMITTEE , ADVISORY BOARD , GUIDELINES AND POLICIES FOR CONTROL , REPORTING SYSTEM ETC.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
242. FROM DUST
A little boy came home from Sunday School and went into his room to change clothes.
When he emerged, he asked his mother, "Is it true that we came from dust?" His mother replied, "Yes, dear. God made us from dust."
The kid ran back into his room and came out all excited. "Mom, I just looked under my bed, and there's somebody either coming or going!"
241. CALLING GOD
It seems a man in Topeka, Kansas, decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working east from there. He went to a very large church and began taking photographs, etc. He spots a golden telephone on a wall and is intrigued with a sign which reads "$10,000 a minute."
Seeking out the pastor he asks about the phone and the sign. The pastor answers that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God. He thanks the pastor and continues on his way. As he continues to visit churches in Seattle, Boise, Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, Atlanta, and on around the United States, he finds more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.
Finally, he arrives in Texas. Upon entering a church in Dallas, lo and behold, he sees the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign reads "Calls 25 cents."
Fascinated, he requests to talk to the pastor. "Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I found this golden telephone, and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 25 cents a call. Why?"
The pastor, smiling benignly, replies, "Oh, my son, that's very easy to explain. You see, you're now in Texas and, of course, it's a local call from here."

SOME FUN FACTS
834. DRIVE ON THE LEFT?
Comes down to keeping your sword hand ready for fighting. In the days before cars, people tended to keep to their left when passing others on the road in order to be in the best position to defend themselves. (They were living in a feudal society; they had to be careful!) Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left so that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him. This practice was made official in a Papal Edict by Pope Benefice around 1300 AD. The Pope told all his pilgrims to keep to the left. In 1773, the UK government introduced the General Highways Act of 1773 to deal with the increase in horse traffic on the roads. The government recommended everyone keep to the left. In 1835, they made it an actual law. (Left it enacted until today.)
835. DRIVE ON THE RIGHT?
Blame it on France. During the period of the French Revolution, the French began to drive on the right. Some say it was just part of the country's sweeping social reforms. Others blame it on the left-handed Napoleon. One explanation is that the French aristocracy drove their carriages at great speed on the left-hand side of the road, forcing the peasants over to the right side for their own safety. When the revolution started, the aristocrats joined the peasants on the right side as a matter of self-preservation. The first official record of this was a keep-right rule introduced in Paris in 1794. When the Americans were severing ties with the British, they adopted the keep-right policy of the French. Today, only about a quarter of the world drives on the left and they live mostly in countries that once made up the British Empire. (So the British are right, on the left!)
836. FLOWERY GODESS
Flora is the Roman goddess of flowers and spring. Flora, meaning "flourishing one," is the embodiment of nature. Her name has come to represent all plant life. Her festival, the Floralia, was celebrated at the end of April and was marked by extravagant merriment and lasciviousness. (Flora who? Flora Fauna, of course!)

FUN WITH SEVEN (The Number of Spiritual Completion)
SEVEN WORDSA woman from the deepest, most southern part of Alabama goes into the local newspaper office to see that the obituary for her recently deceased husband is written. The obit editor informs her that the fee for the obituary is 50 cents a word.
She pauses, reflects and then says, "Well, then, let it read, 'Billy Bob died'."
Amused at the woman's thrift, the editor says, "Sorry ma'am, there is a 7 word minimum on all obituaries."
Only a little flustered, she thinks things over and in a few seconds says, "In that case, let it read, 'Billy Bob died - 1983 Pick-up for sale.'"
CHICKENS
The farmer's son was returning from the market with he crate of chicken's his father had entrusted to him, when all of a sudden the box fell and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighborhood scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate. Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst.
"Pa, the chickens got loose," the boy confessed sadly, "but I managed to find all twelve of them."
"Well, you did real good, son," the farmer beamed.
"You left with seven."

A PERSONAL NEED
In order to efficiently continue doing the increasing volume of writing, travel, and shortly, internet teaching, being requested of me, I need to more effectively utilize my time when travelling. To achieve this, I require a new or late second hand, lightweight model, Laptop Computer. (Notepad) Modern and lightweight, because of the need to carry it far and often!
Such a new machine costs approximately $US1,100-1,200 in New Zealand at the present time, due to the current fall in value of the US dollar.
I would much appreciate your prayers for this need, and if the Lord prompts you to assist, that would be hugely appreciated.
Regular readers will know how reluctant I am to ask!
For further information, or to assist, please email me at david@wwj.org.nz Thank you.
A DAVID MUSING
Home again, just in time to finalize another trip away! One of the 'sacrifices' of travel has been my running! Not just in volume, but more sadly, in speed! I imagine others now seeing how slowly I push my feet one in front of the other, thinking, "What is he trying to prove!" Well, nothing really! Just enjoy it when I can. But not too much in the Tropics though! There are limits! Still, I did manage to run a couple of times in the Philippines with my new American friend, Michael..... Mad foreigners.....
A sacrifice worth making for the opportunity and privilege to share God's Word to others. Well that's my excuse, anyway! But ask my stomach!
