WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY? Part 19
1700-1900
METHODISM
JOHN WESLEY (1703-1791) The son of an Anglican vicar and brilliant mother, John graduated from Oxford with the highest honours available and was ordained into the Anglican priesthood in 1728, aged 25.
While at Oxford he and his brother Charles founded a group which became known as Methodists, due to their disciplined, methodical approach to seeking God. It did not bring John peace to his soul.
After a failed missionary venture to Georgia, USA, he returned to Britain and continued his search. On 14 May, 1738, he found the inner assurance he had long sought at a reading of Luther's 'Preface to Romans', at a meeting in Aldersgate Street, London, declaring.....
I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sin, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.
This radically changed both his personal life and his ministry. Preaching justification by Christ alone, he was accepted by the masses but rejected by the church hierarchy, a rejection that continually stung him.
Supernatural phenomena followed. Concerning an all-night prayer meeting Wesley wrote in his 'Journal'.....
At about three in the morning, as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground...We broke out with one voice, "We praise thee, O God, we acknowledge thee to be the Lord."
As the churches continued to reject him, he found new avenues to minister, traveling on horseback throughout England, preaching in the open air. Multitudes were converted. The Holy Spirit confirmed the Word with healings, with deliverances and with unusual manifestations such as falling, trembling, roaring, crying and laughing. Healings took place too.
Interestingly, he was 'charged with enthusiasm' by an appropriately named 'Mr Church', particularly over the supernatural phenomena being experienced! Wesley responded.....
I do not recollect any Scripture wherein we are taught that miracles were to be confined within the limits either of the apostolic age or the Cyprian age, or of any period of time, longer or shorter, even till the restitution of all things.
A SECOND WORK OF GRACE
Wesley's primary revelation was his emphasis on an experience that Christians should seek subsequent to the new birth experience. He referred to this second experience as Christian perfection or entire sanctification. This was not sinless perfection. For Wesley, this experience consisted of God's love so filling the heart that the power of sin would be broken and holiness of life would result. While a sanctified person could still make mistakes, and even sin, the mistakes would be related to the mind and making poor judgments rather than wilful sins of the heart, being based on Hebrews 12:14 .....
"Follow peace with all men, and holiness [sanctification] without which no man shall see the Lord" (KJV)
JOHN FLETCHER (1729-1785) Fletcher, an ordained Anglican priest, became the systematic theologian of early Methodism. His most important work was 'Checks to Antinomianism,' a defence of the Arminian theology of Wesley and a rebuttal of the Calvinistic branch of Methodism led by George Whitfield.
Quoting Eddie Hyatt.....
Fletcher was widely read by nineteenth-century holiness advocates who also incorporated his Pentecostal language into their teaching and writing. Wesleyan terminology was thus replaced by his Pentecostal terminology. This helped set the stage for the twentieth-century Pentecostal movement that emerged out of the nineteenth-century Holiness movement. Early Methodism, a Charismatic movement in its own right, thus became the womb that gave birth to the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement of the twentieth century.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS
May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Parable of the Two Sons (Matthew 21:28-32)
Spoken to the Pharisees.
“But what do you think about this illustration? Once there was a man who had two sons. He went to the first son, and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ The son answered, ‘I won’t,’ but afterwards he was sorry for what he said and he did go. The man went to the second son, and told him the same thing. He replied, ‘I’ll go,’ but he didn’t. Which of the two sons did what his father wanted?”
The first.
“I tell you the truth: tax-collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you,” “John came to show you the way to live right with God, and you didn’t believe him, but the tax-collectors and prostitutes did believe him. Later, when you saw what happened, you still didn’t repent and believe him.”
Parable of the Tenants (Matthew 21:33-46, Mark 12:1-12, Luke 20:9-18)
A parable spoken against the chief priests and Pharisees.
“Here’s another illustration. There once was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, made a winepress, and built a watchtower. He rented it to some tenant farmers, and then left to go to a different country. At harvest time, he sent his servants to the farmers to collect the fruit that belonged to him. But the farmers attacked his servants They beat one, killed another, and stoned another. So he sent more servants, but the farmers did the same things to them. So then he sent his son. ‘They will respect my son,’ he told himself. But the farmers, when they saw the son, said to each other, ‘Here’s the heir! Come on! Let’s kill him so we can take his inheritance!’ They grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. When the vineyard owner returns, what will he do to those farmers?”
Kill them and give the farm to others, the Pharisees replied.
“So haven’t you read the Scriptures?” “‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. The Lord has done this, and it is wonderful in our eyes.’ That’s why I’m telling you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you. It will be given to a people who produce the right kind of fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken, but it will completely crush anyone it falls upon.”

OUR AFRICAN EXPERIENCE
Experience life here with us in Kenya.
Check out our website too - when it is back online, bigger and better, in a few days.....
"RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY"!
We have lost nearly a week on our building site! When it rains it pours - but then mostly fines up! Maybe tomorrow - African time!
THEN TODAY.....THE LAST TRUCK ARRIVES! AT LAST!
After waiting for the slab to cure, plus rain, to prevent supplies being delivered, the big day arrives!
My friend David delivers!
And of course, I have to do my share - for the camera! LOL!
YYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
After a week's delay the wall are finally on the way!!!!
Now, with a little imagination, we can start to see what it is going to look like.
34 people on site each day. Costs as much as 1 person in New Zealand!
After 2 days we have 4 layers of stones reaching to window height.
The picture shows the clinic area at the front of the building.
The bricked area to the left is the European style toilets. The other side, a consultation room.
Stone mason laying the 3rd row of stones. Notice the metal strips on top of the 2nd layer, to provide flexibility in the case of an earthquake. They are so small here, you can't feel them! Not like our big shakes in New Zealand!
PREPARING OUR NEXT HORTICULTURAL PROJECT
On the spare 1/2 acre of our hospital land, we have today plowed the land, using 4 oxen, for planting 200,000 Gloriosa Lily seeds, to produce bulbs for export.
We will not be growing for the flowers as we are too far away from an International Airport, but the bulbs are in demand worldwide.
Gloriosa lilies are the national flower of Zimbabwe, and grow wild in the forests of Kenya too. So we would expect the conditions we have will suit them. Time will tell!
PS: You can see the the hospital foundations and the African Latrines in the top right corner of the photo.
We disturbed the first, albeit small, snake I have seen, living amongst the old maize stems, stored against the shelter belt. Once that has been cleared up, the snakes will disappear, as they do not like cultivated ground.

'THE WORDS OF JESUS' REMAIN AVAILABLE FOR PDF DOWNLOAD
Join the many who have downloaded the 'The Words of Jesus'. I am sure you will be blessed by it, as I have been.
One key element here is the setting out in chronological order (as far as it is possible to do so) our Lord's words drawn from all the Gospels, and the elimination of repetition between Gospels.
You may be surprised by the different perspective this presentation gives you both in understanding of His life and ministry, and in achieving a closer relationship with Him.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
8. The foolish speak before they think, the wise think before they speak, while the godly let their lives speak for them.
9. The foolish are satisfied with reading the Word, the wise follow the Word, while the godly are as one with the Word.
10. The foolish listen to themselves, the wise listen to others, while the godly submit to spiritual oversight.
11. The lips of the foolish blaspheme God, those of the wise honour God, while the godly ones' lips glorify their God.
12. The foolish love pleasure, the wise find pleasure in love, but to the godly, pleasure is love.
13. Unity of fellowship is spurned by the foolish, acknowledged by the wise, but sought by the godly.
14. Foolishness is effortless, wisdom a gift, but godliness requires submission.
15. Satan loves the foolish, attacks the wise, but fears the godly.
16. Wisdom is easily read, takes time to acquire, but needs to be applied over a lifetime.

72. Heavenly Inspiration
The temporary Sunday School teacher was struggling to open a combination lock on the supply cabinet.
She had been told the combination, but couldn't quite remember it. Finally she went to the pastor's study and asked for help.
The pastor came into the room and began to turn the dial. After the first two numbers he paused and stared blankly for a moment. Finally he looked serenely heavenward and his lips moved silently.
Then he looked back at the lock, and quickly turned to the final number, and opened the lock.
The teacher was amazed. "I'm in awe at your faith, pastor," she said.
"It's really nothing," he answered.
"The number is on a piece of tape on the ceiling."

A DAVID MUSING
Along with time keeping, requiring patience, the other major challenge of living here is the emphasis on money, or rather, the lack of it.
Of course, being white, we are assumed to have plenty of it, which will freely be given away! This has grown through years of observing the white man coming and bringing riches with him.
With us, that certainly is not the case, for we live a no assets lifestyle. So it gets a little tiresome explaining that we have no house, no land etc, when many round here have both.
Their problem though, is that the farms are so small, being split amongst the children, generation after generation, that they are completely subsistence, perhaps providing meagre food for the family but with virtually nothing left over for education, medical expenses etc.
So the people here aren't starving, except in a drought, but they are chronically poor.
Looking to the West, to us as the only representatives of it in a large area, can be tiresome. We have simply had to learn to say no, or we would never get a hospital built.
In saying that, the people are still happier with nothing, than we are in the West, with all our possessions.
The love of money, as Jesus said, is a harsh taskmaster, wherever we live, in poverty or relative abundance.
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait
