SERMON ON THE MOUNT - THE KINGDOM WAY
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:15-21)EXPOSITION: Note, A man may be a preacher, may have gifts for the ministry, and an external call to it, and perhaps some success in it, and yet be a wicked man; may help others to heaven, and yet come short himself.......This should be an awakening word to all Christians. If a preacher, one that cast out devils, and wrought miracles, be disowned of Christ for working iniquity; what will become of us, if we be found such? And if we be such, we shall certainly be found such. At God’s bar, a profession of religion will not bear out any man in the practice and indulgence of sin; therefore let every one that names the name of Christ, depart from all iniquity. (Henry, Matthew, Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible, (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers) 1997.)
TESTIMONY: As we saw last week, there are a good number of passages warning about imposters in ministry. Likewise, there are also many ordinary people in the church who proclaim themselves to be followers of Jesus, who really aren't. The tares will be separated from the wheat in due course.
Today's message is a warning. Be careful who you allow to influence your walk with Jesus. Do they truly 'practice what they preach?' If you don't know, it is safer not to follow their leading.
There is a problem with big ministries. Of necessity, the leaders are so far removed from the people, that it is just about impossible to check them out. We see many leaders being exposed at the present time, which comes with tremendous hurt and damage to the people, numbers of whom will never grace a church again, and may well throw away their faith.
Beware of the spiritual 'super salesman', who will likely look good, perhaps with a 'trophy wife', who likes to acquire the good things of the world rather than sacrifice the material in order to seek and find the spiritual. Most prosperity preachers fall into this category.
Secondly, be careful not to confuse anointing with godliness. I say this not from a position of jealousy, but as a caution from one who has been blessed with an anointing. Most times I speak, the Holy Spirit will come in power at some time during a series of meetings. It amazed me the first time it happened and has continued to surprise me ever since, for I do nothing. He simply turns up.
With the criticism I took the first time it happened, I went into depression for several months which killed any more public ministry for several years. When I did start speaking again, I did not know what would happen, but the Spirit again turned up, and I was, through having gone to hell and back (figuratively speaking!), so deepening my relationship with Jesus, better able to handle the situation.
For the past 2 1/2 years I have not done any public speaking, as our efforts have centered around setting up our second hand clothing business, Seekers Megamarts. However, as we become established, I sense that the time may be coming nearer when some speaking will return. Will the Holy Spirit turn up then? I don't know for sure, but feel it highly likely He will. But I take nothing for granted!
You see, anointing is given, and often remains, even when the receiver walks away from the Lord. And the temptations for anointed people to walk away are great, for satan is continually on your case! From personal experience, do not pray to receive anointing unless you are prepared to pay the price! I never did pray to get it, but God still gave it, for I guess He knew me better than I know myself. Like everything in God, the greater the blessing, the greater the cost. We all want the blessings, but are we really prepared to price of receiving them?
But I digress.......
While anointing may be a sign of one to listen to, it may not be, also. Note that I didn't say 'to follow'. For the only one we are to follow is Jesus! We may learn from a person, but we are only to follow Jesus. If our spiritual life is built upon the leadership of a human being, we are not 'walking in The Way'. Our primary relationship must be with Jesus. We are to get to know Him through reading The Word for ourselves until, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Jesus becomes part of us, and we, part of Him. No man, no woman, can be a 'Jesus substitute' in our lives. Yes, we need good mentors. But most of all, we need Jesus!
As leaders, only relationship with Jesus will stop us from going astray. As followers, may we follow Jesus, not a person.
The church age has encouraged us to follow leadership, but in the coming kingdom age, in the final days, our attention and focus is to be upon Jesus. For it is only He who can turn the church into the pure white bride for whom He is to return.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.†(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.) (Revelation 19:7-8)

FROM THE WORD
Balaam’s Donkey"Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road. Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her again. Then the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat her with his staff. Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?†Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.†The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?†No,†he said. Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown. The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared her.†Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.†The angel of the LORD said to B alaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.†So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon border, at the edge of his territory. Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?†“Well, I have come to you now,†Balaam replied. “But can I say just anything? I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.†Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and gave some to Balaam and the princes who were with him. The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal, and from there he saw part of the people." (Numbers 22:21-41)
The Parable of the Two Sons
"“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ â€â€˜I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. “Which of the two did what his father wanted?†“The first,†they answered. Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him." (Matthew 21:28-32)
Simon the Sorcerer
"Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is the divine power known as the Great Power.†They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their ha nds on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.†Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.†Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.†When they had testified and proclaimed the word of the Lord, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages." (Acts 8:9-25)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
GODLINESS1240. Wisdom is much admired upon the earth, while godliness reaches out to the very heart of God.
1241. The godly one keeps short accounts with both God and people, while seeking to do God's will with every fibre of their being.
1242. Godliness is not human perfection but the way of discipleship, lived by the blood of the Lamb, through the word of our testimony, and by 'dying' to self. (Revelation 12:11)
1243. Godliness is a partnership. God's offers the blood of Jesus and we are to offer our life in return.
1244. As worldliness goes, godliness grows.
1245. My desire is that God says about me, "David is a man after my own heart."
1246. Wisdom impresses the world, but godliness makes an impression on God's heart.
1247. The godly one has God's heart for others.
1248. God witnesses to others through His godliness as developed in us.
1248. God gives us many gifts. Godliness is the gift He most desires in return from us.
1249. To be 'good' is great, but being 'God' to others, is godly. The difference is 'o' for 'obedience'.
1250. 'Godliness' and 'self' are mutually exclusive.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 â€â€˜In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ (Acts 2:14-21)

92. ARTISTIC LICENSE
A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, "Boys and girls, what do we know about God?" A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the kindergarten boy. "Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked. "You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven."
91. WISE ADVICE
While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humour, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... "Energy efficient vehicle. Runs on oats and grass - Caution: Do not step in exhaust."
90. FUNDRAISING
There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Are fish more abundant in cold ocean water orwarm water?
ANSWER: Most people would guess that ocean life is more abundant in
warm water. They'd be wrong. All kinds of marine life - plant and animal -
are more abundant in colder waters. Many of the best fishing grounds are
found in the coldest places. Why? Cold water holds more dissolved
gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, which marine plants need to
photosynthesize. The more plant food you have, the more fish and sea
mammals you'll see. Antarctic waters are simply teeming with
microscopic plankton that attracts whales and fish. (Do fish feel the cold?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Are there really such things as elephant
graveyards?
Answer Next Week.
334. IT'S ALL RUBBISH
Public sanitation was definitely at an all-time low during the Middle Ages. Garbage was piled up so high outside the city of Paris during the 1400's that it interfered with the city's defences. (An ‘offence’ to the nose of attackers though.)
335. CUTTING COSTS
In Hollywood's early movie-making days, even the stars supplied their own wardrobe for contemporary films. Period clothes were supplied from stock, or by the Western Costume Company, established in 1912. Anyone with a dress suit could earn extra money and higher status in films of the 1920s. (Did they claim a clothing allowance?)
336. DOG SWEAT
Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not sweat by salivating. They sweat through the pads of their feet. (Walk on water?)

How Many People Attend House Church? Barna Study Finds It All Depends
The Barna GroupVENTURA, CA - Numerous shifts are occurring among church-goers in the U.S. as they choose from many new forms and formats of the local church. One of the least understood forms is the house church, and one of the fundamental questions is exactly how many people are attending house churches. According to a new report from The Barna Group, it depends on how such involvement is described to survey respondents.
The California-based research firm has explored people’s involvement in non-traditional ministry settings in a dozen nationwide studies it has conducted in the past five years. The researchers discovered that the number of participants varies significantly according to the definition used, ranging from a minimum of 4% of the adult population to a maximum of 33%!
MEASURING HOUSE CHURCH INVOLVEMENT
George Barna, who has overseen the process of studying house churches and how to best measure participation rates in organic forms of ministry such as house churches, noted that there are several components in the measurement process that affect the survey outcomes.
When a question asks whether the survey respondent has “attended a worship service in someone’s home, known as a house church,†the results generally find about 10% of the adult population claims to have done so in the past month. This pattern holds true regardless of whether or not the question includes a disclaimer that the gathering “is not associated with a local, congregational type of church.†The numbers change relatively little if the time frame is expanded to the past year, registering about 13% of all adults.
A different approach is to ask people how often, if ever, they attend a religious service – not a “worship service†– in someone’s home or even in some other place that is independent of a congregational-form church. This more inclusive question typically finds that 22% to 24% of all adults claim to have had such an experience during a given month.
The most prolific response comes when adults are asked if they have “experienced God or expressed (their) faith in God in a house church or simple church meeting in the past month,†regardless of whether it is affiliated with some other church entity. This definition, certainly the broadest of the six variations tested, finds that one-third of adults claim to have been involved in such a gathering during the preceding month.
The smallest rate of participation is derived by posing the most narrowly framed of the six questions examined. That question asked if the respondent had been “part of a group of believers that meets regularly in a home or place other than a church building. These groups are not part of a typical church; they meet independently, are self-governed and consider themselves to be a complete church on their own. Do you participate in such a group, sometimes known as a house church or simple church, that is not associated in any way with a local, congregational type of church?†The response to this inquiry consistently generates just 3% to 6% of all adults saying they have been involved in such an assembly during a typical month.

WAXING LYRICAL
When all else fails, we have our family! Or we should. When our family fails, they are still our family! Or they should be. Our family is our greatest source of both pleasure and frustration. They know us best. We cannot fool them. So here is a little about our family. Since the poem was written Andrew and Catriona have produced our baby Eva, our first grandchild. But 20,000km away in Scotland! Thankyou Lord for emails! (Written several years ago. Eva is now 8 and has a brother and sister!)LIFE’S A LAWNMOWER, MATE! (Concluded)
Our Nigel is a non-mechanical type,
Gets on with life - ignores the hype!
He likes to tune his mower to sing,
For making music is his big thing.
Filling tanks with petrol, through university his way to pay,
Nigel’s found his Saviour, growing more like him every day.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!
Our youngest, Cameron, is a lawnmower freak,
Forever racing the ride-on, until last week,
When in one of life’s many twists and turns,
The mower bit him, now a lesson he learns,
That life ‘taint’ straightforward, as it so often seems,
To an adventurous bloke, eagerly entering his teens!
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!
Now you know our lawnmower family, no two models the same,
With such a mix of makes and types, who would be so game,
As to try to work in harmony, to always stay in tune?
About as likely as the cow, jumping over the moon!
But we are still a family, mowing our way through life,
Sometimes running sweetly, at other times with strife!
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!
So how should we mow then, our life’s uneven lawn,
To keep it manicured, ensuring blades aren’t worn,
Maintaining our engine, so it will always go,
There’s only one manual, as far as I do know,
It’s called the Bible, sets out the rules,
Of living our lives, so we are not fools.
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!
We don’t always follow it - you can see from the above,
For our family’s an ordinary one, not yet perfect in love.
Yet love is the key to God’s maintenance plan,
To keep us going, this lawnmower called man.
Like any machine we falter, yes we weep and we spin,
But with Jesus our serviceman, we must finally win!
Oh yes, life’s a lawnmower, mate!

A DAVID MUSING
Kathy and I had a very pleasent weekend away. I am sure you wanted to know that! Until, that is, we were about 25km from home near the appropriately called, Devils Elbow, a very sharp turn in the road. The country here is hilly. And our car of 13 years and nearly 300,000km decided to stop! And we couldn't get it to go again! Almost like a death in the family! Then, a vehicle coming in the opposite direction stopped and offered a hand. Upon hearing my voice, the driver recognised it from our radio ads. He was not only a customer of Seekers but an 'angel with a beard'!
Our new friend towed us back home - the opposite direction to which he was travelling. Thank you Lord!
We had a chat when we got back and it turned out he was a backslidden Christian who had got into drugs and crime etc. He had now given that up but had not yet got back into God.
So tragedy, for the car is still not going as our mechanic has not been able to find the problem, turned into a God given experience, both for our friend as well as for Kathy and me.
God does things differently, doesn't He?
Until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
